BACKSTORY

*World/context: lives in a universe where strange paranormal/supernatural things exist and happen, though it may not be known to the general public/common individual
When she was very young, Halei found that she would get rashes and her skin would hurt and itch for seemingly no reason at all. For her twin brother, it was the opposite - other people would get rashes and their skin would hurt and itch. She never felt what she had was caused by him though. Some kids at school were mean to her because of her eczema scars. It angered her brother more than herself, and the there would sometimes be yard fights because of the bullying. She didn't often take part in the fights, but if they started insulting her brother or her family, she would quip back with her own comebacks. Ironically, she would grow up to be the more rash of the two siblings, perhaps because she came to the idea that trying to talk out bullies often didn't make them go away, and if someone wanted change to happen, they have to take action.
She had great patience for reading books, often indulging in crime stories and mysteries, both fiction and real life cases. She admired those who kept on pushing until the big break that lead them to the perpetrator. Unfortunately, real life was not so perfect. There were many cold cases, people gave up, and victims were left wondering what happened. Sometimes victims talked about being haunted or that they were attacked by an unseen force. Of course, they were dismissed as crazy, but the holes that were left in the story that people assumed had happened were intriguing. As she grew up, she slowly developed an interest in reading about ghosts and spirits, having had strange experiences and closely studying stories from other people. Her tertiary studies included social psychology, dabbling a bit in criminology, and she took up much interest in history and ancient texts.
Aside her work and studies, she started working with someone who entitled himself an exorcist, studying spells and rituals from old books and travelling around to banish evil spirits for haunted people and places. However, over time it dawned on her that he didn't understand as much as he proclaimed and was actually a conman. Ashamed and betrayed as she felt about this, she was the one who initiated the investigation that led to his arrest. However, she didn't leave the work there. She took up his materials in her own hands and studied them herself, learning the true art of exorcism and sealing, so that there was someone who could answer the call of distressed people tormented by malignant forces.
Sometimes there are cases which are never solved because the police were looking for a human perpetrator. Halei may go and investigate to see if there's a paranormal cause, or the victims call on her having heard her name through word-of-mouth or some other means.
