Grimm has a unique ability to sense and tap into the power of souls. He can see who a person truly is at their core, viewing their souls as if in physical form. As such it has become his task to ferry new souls to the Underworld. He has a knack for soothing the newcomers and guiding them to their inevitable doom, although he does not take any pleasure in it like some of his peers. Grimm is often unsure of himself and wishes he could escape, but whenever he does it is only for a fleeting moment before Crowe whisks him back to the Underworld again. He is too highly valued for his skills with souls to let wander free, and there is no one else willing or able to do his job. Thus he feels eternally trapped and somewhat of an outcast because of what he can do. At one point, the demons even attempted to clip his wings to prevent future escapes. They botched the job, however, and while his wings are still usable it is often painful for him to fly. This hasn't stopped him from trying, though.

In the mortal world, Grimm’s abilities still manifest themselves, but only those who have had near death experiences have any inkling of it. Those who are not yet dead but have touched death’s coils can see the color of their soul reflected in Grimm’s eyes, and it is often quite unnerving and makes others fear Grimm. He tries to soothe them as best he can but is often hindered by the fact that their souls are tethered to a physical body. He has more success soothing souls that are untethered such as those in the Underworld.
