    • captain's life began in the middle.
he won't remember the past; refuses to, actually.

his life begin in the middle of an arena, screaming out in pain as the teeth of a houndoom sunk into the flesh of his thigh. the teeth were ripped from him in an uproar from the other contestant in the arena, and captain took his chance and limped off to the side. he hugged the wall, tail tucked under his legs, praying that the fight ended soon. praying that they'd leave him out of it. he got them riled up- he'd done his job. he carefully cleaned the wound on his leg, hissing out in pain under his breath.

the fight went smoothly as ever, with one of the large canines with their teeth locked in a death grip on the other, and captain was thankfully let out of the arena before the houndoom turned its attention back to him. this was the usual way of things; he was always put away before he was caught, after all, they couldn't do it properly without their bait. it had been like this since the last one- no, he doesn't want to think of how he got here. his trainer was as good as dead to him, anyways. friendship meant nothing in a place like this.

as he was limping back to the small pillow that made up his living quarters, he heard something. someone.
they didn't approach until later, in the darkness. they offered him a hand, and spoke in a way that captain understood perfectly; offered to bring him onboard, somewhere safe, somewhere he could live without worrying about these fights anymore.

captain... didn't see how his life could get worse. he agreed, and the stranger swept him up and brought him somewhere new.

it took a while to get used to the way that boats moved against waves, and took even longer to get used to his new name. he was the little captain, free and in charge of his own life.

his leg healed up with no visible scarring over his fur, and with that healing, captain fully transitioned from his old life, into the one he was truly meant to live.

captain was told, early on, that his savior's time was temporary. he was attached anyways, but he did his best to branch out, to befriend the other members of the crew; to find comfort in knowing that, when his savior left, he wouldn't be alone again. the actual Captain was nice, and captain felt a sort of familiarity in the eevee that trailed along at his heels. he did his best to befriend that eevee, one of the few outside of his savior who he would feel comfortable being near.

he lived on the ship, enjoying his life, and the salty smell of the ocean- opening his heart in the cold nights to his savior, who would hold him close and listen, would offer his loving words of comfort. captain didn't sleep, not when he should, at least. he could only sleep pressed against the side of someone from the crew, and even then- he was plagued by nightmares of the years in that arena. and whenever one of these nightmares would rip him from his slumber, he would find himself in the arms of his savior, nose buried deep into the heavy cloaks that he wore, sobbing out his woes until the exhaustion snuck up again.

during the daylight hours, captain would run around the deck with the other pokémon, namely the now-evolved sylveon, finding that these moments were the perfect distraction from the haunting thoughts of how his days used to be spent. even with his hatred- fear- of canine-esque pokémon, he found friendship in one of the younger pokémon; a sweet little mix of rockruff and litleo. he loved his family, his crew, more than life itself.

days continued as such; until... they didn't.

he knew his savior was going to leave, but he wasn't prepared when it happenend. the small speech filled him with a feeling he couldn't name, brought intense and screaming emotions to surface; and all he could do was stand tall. enjoy his last few moments with the person who had brought him into this life. he tells him how much he loves him; how much he means to him. he wishes him well in wherever he's going.

the next morning, captain awakes laying against the slyveon, and his savior is gone.
not long after; the Captain retires. captain understands; the world feels different now.

the captain becomes a ferryman for someplace; a foundation set on paradise. and captain does his best, telling himself this is his home now.
