What I Wish To Forget

“Greetings, Ladies and Gentlemen! Attendees of the Great Tree! It is I, the Artful Artist!”

Roars from the crowd shake the tight walls of the theater. An older Articuno spreads his wings out, embracing the warming presence of cheers.

Artful gives a pleasant laugh, “It’s great to be back in my old stomping ground. Unfortunately, as you may know, my former colleagues will not be joining me…”

A murmur rushes through the crowd. It starts small, but picks up like a rising wave. Everything stops when the Articuno lifts his wing in the air.

“But!” He boasts, “I am pleased to announce that I will be collaborating with another one of the theater’s greatest acts!”

Murmurs turn to cheers. The walls shake again.

“You all know her?”

They scream and shout, some chirp, others sing.

“Of course, who wouldn’t forget the likes of the Bashful, the Brilliant, the great Ballad Of Beauty!!” A curtain drops from behind Artful, revealing a large, vintage poster of a bright eyed Tranquill ballerina. “Her dances amaze you, her songs inspire you, her wings embrace you with light and wonder!”

A standing ovation, a sea of claps and flapping wings, the room feels like an ocean. And Artful is swimming in it.

He walks closer to the poster, he holds on to it tight with one wing, his other wing grips tighter his microphone. “And tonight on our tour, we have a special announcement, just for you-“

Silence. Everyone leans forward. Only the humming of stage lights dares to interrupt.

“This will no longer be a two bird act-“

Gasp! The crowd is shaken, the room feels still.

“Let me introduce you to our new FULL ACT-“

The Curtain Drops.

Cheers,
Roars,
Screams,
Cries,

Silence.

The cage is empty.
A shackle swings in the air.
The metal bars, blown to bits.

A single Articuno stands. Eyes fixated on what was left.
A shattered glass bottle-

Crack
A piece of debris falls on the bird’s beak.
He gently picks it up with his wing.
Examines it’s black paint, much like the ceiling-
The ceiling-

He looks above, cracks cover the walls.
The crowd roars once more…

A young tranquill trails behind a slowpoke. She twirls a ring with one wing and cradles an egg in the other.

“We’re almost there, Dancer!” The slowpoke shouts, “I got a buddy who can get us a room.”

Dancer nods, “Good! Very good.” She hugs her little egg. Her little Buddy.
