It's A Whole Story

“If we’re gonna be roommates, we gotta know more about each other.”

The slowpoke’s squinted at the awfully chatty tranquill that sat across from them in the cramp cage. Her eyes were bright, she must of just evolved, since the red hues above her eyes barely reached a pale pink.

“Honestly?” The slowpoke slowly mustered. Hy unfurled hys body to face the bird. “It’s a boring story. I just lost a bet. That’s all.”

“That’s all?” The Tranquill repeated. Her head tilted more.

The slowpoke scowled. “Yeah. Is there more to know?”

“Do you like games?” She was blunt. And monotoned.

Hy was quick and sharp, “Sure. Do you?”

“Wanna play a game?” She was Dismissive.

“Sure.” Hy Shrugged if off.

The two sat closer to one another.

“Checkers?” Called the Tranquill.
Her voice was slightly more eager has she pulled out a board and pieces.

The slowpoke went to raised a question, but was stopped-
“My name’s Dancer, by the way.” She continued, “And each time I take one of your pieces, you have to answer my question.”

Slowpoke shrugged, “Only if you do the same, Dancer.”

“Bet!” Cried the bird.

She made the first move. Hy made the second. She made the third. Hy made the fourth. She took one of Hys pieces.

“HEY!-“

“What’s your name?”

The slowpoke stopped. Hy Glared, and then growled, then exhaled, “Champ.”

“Nice to meet you, Champ.”

The sound of a clanking in the distance startled the two. The pieces were thrown off the board, the two slid to the back of the cage. A single bottle appeared towards the front of the bars… They remained silent… until all the sound stopped and the bottle stopped moving.

Dancer was the first to emerge. She slowly began to pick up the pieces again. A single claw touched her wing.

Champ smiled, hy held the bottle in hys hand. “I have an idea…”

A flash came from the sky. From this flash, Champagne saw a reflection, a realization...
