Atsuya to Kagaya Ubayashiki, Episode 23

Atsuya Yamauchi (山内 敦也 Yamauchi Atsuya) is a Hinoe ranked Demon Slayer and manhunter in the Demon Slaying Corps.

Appearance

Atsuya is a young man with average stature and fairly light build. He has tanned skin and a serene face with brown to honey colored eyes. His black hair is long and uneven, sectioned into three. His bangs are brushed the the left, while he has thick locks of hair framing his face. He was two sections of evenly cut hair that fall just past his collarbone and are neatly tied by magenta tassels. The shorter part of his hair is cut and whose ends are flyaway, while the rest of his hair is tied neatly into a long ponytail.

His Demon Slayer Uniform is well-kept. He wears the standard black Demon Slayer Uniform with a desaturated mauve nagajuban over it, topped with a maroon haori whose sleeves have a pinkish-peach gradient. The haori has seigaiha patterns with golden cloud patterns on the sleeves. The uniform top, nagajuban and haori are tucked into the hakama, fastened with the white uniform belt and below it a black and grey fastening string. Atsuya also notably wears black and red sangu. On his arms he has black han kote with red plating over black gloves, while his suneate are all red, fastened with a black twine. His black tabi also have armor.

Personality

Atsuya comes off a docile and quiet individual, often observing situations from afar and acts only when prompted. To mask his intentions, he appears with a serene smile and docile demeanor. Yet, he is far from meek and is constantly on guard. Instead of being receptive, Atsuya keeps himself at a distance, and doesn't actually seem to really want to interact with others unless he feels the need to. If pushed despite his silence, he will show varying degrees of annoyance and irritation, which may end up prompting him to speak harshly. Once involved in a situation, whether by will or not, Atsuya is not half-hearted, and will put his one hundred percent in it, no matter how trivial.

His silence actually comes from his constant tiredness, both physical and mental. Atsuya finds himself fretting constantly over his fellow Slayers' actions and judging who will end up running off or even becoming deserters. With other Slayers, he's strict and direct to the point, not sparing much feelings without being overly harsh. He's not the best at kind and encouraging words, but he makes it known that he comes from a place of kindness. He; however, sometimes has to push himself to that extent and laments his actions.

Despite his own feelings about the Demon Slayer Corps as a whole, Atsuya is devoted to his duty and will not settle for lackluster performance, even at the cost of his own physical wellbeing. He tries to be objective in his decisions and acts in a way that he feels is the best, taking all things into account. He holds himself in high enough esteem to strongly believe in his own actions and decisions and their impact on others when he does end up saying something.

Atsuya is shown to not be vindictive, despite his strictness with others. While he can be angry at someone for the decisions they make, he makes it a point to see past one's mistakes and will take a while before he judges someone's character. Interestingly, Atsuya doesn't have that much vindication against demons either, expressing more pity than anger. He even makes the remark that he is too tired to be filled with hate, and that his anger should be reserved and directed for more important things.

Deep down, Atsuya is kind at heart and means well for the rest of the Demon Slayer Crops, even if it means they have to learn the hard way. Though, he does wish that people learned fast enough to avoid punishment, showing some remorse he has in his actions despite it being for the better good. When people decide upon things with haste, Atsuya will be the person to tell them to stop and think for a moment. Because of his lack of vindictiveness against others in general, his opinions are quite valued.

While Atsuya may be distant at first, it isn't hard to develop a personal relationship with him. Give it enough time and exposure, he will begin to see through others and discern whether or not he would like to pursue a friendship with them. Atsuya takes pride in being a good judge of character, and more often than not he finds himself correct. Atsuya may not be that person to assert himself in instigating conversations outside of work, but if he feels that his personal relationships have become stale, he will go out of his comfort zone to keep things going. When it comes to personal relationships, Atsuya has been said to be more naggy than strict.

Abilities and Powers

Natural Abilities

  • Heightened Sense of Touch: Similarly to Insouke Hashibira, Atsuya has a particular sense of touch. He can feel the faintest vibrations coming from his surroundings as well as the sort of vibrations given by living creatures. He can sense human's fear and agitation through certain vibrations and demons he says, have far stronger vibrations than any other living being, being able to easily pinpoint their locations.
  • Swordsmanship: As expected from a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, Atsuya is a skilled swordsman. He has an edge above the rest as he had been learning swordsmanship since early childhood, putting him at an advanced level above other swordsmen in the Corps.
  • Enhanced Speed: Atsuya is incredibly quick in on his feet and with his movements, despite wielding the thicker and heavier tachi as compared to regular katanas as well as wearing sangu. Compared to other Slayers, Atsuya is quick and can catch someone before they can even process.
  • Enhanced Endurance: Atsuya is incredibly durable in the sense of physical capability and stamina. Despite his figure, Atsuya can't go down despite being dealt many blows, still being in good enough shape to continue fighting.
  • Enhanced Flexibility: To meet the physical demands of his Breath Style, Atsuya developed enhanced flexibility that allows him to maneuver and twist while in mid-air in order to execute forms for his Breath Style.
  • Total Concentration Breathing: Although not a Pillar nor Tsuguko, Atsuya is one of the slayers who have mastered Total Concentration Breathing and is in a constant state of it. Atsuya's natural sense of touch is amplified considerably because of this, as well as his physiological functions, allowing him more leg power and flexibility.
  • Demon Slayer Mark: Atsuya awakened to his Demon Slayer Mark fighting against Upper Moon 3 Akaza within the Dimensional Infinity Fortress, fighting alongside Water Pillar Giyuu Tomioka, greatly increasing Atsuya's speed and reflexes, making his slashes as quick as the blink of an eye. His Slayer Mark appears as thick weighted whiplash lines down his cheeks.

Swordsmanship

Breath of Dust (埃 の 呼吸 Hokori no kokyū):

The Breath of Dust is a personal breath style developed by Atsuya Yamauchi. It is derived from the Breath of Wind. The Breath Style consists of quick, upward movements that transition into aerial attacks and dives that can only be successfully performed by Atsuya. The Breath of Dust is a style that doesn't require strong footing, but demands a combination of speed, durability and flexibility. It is also a good support and moveset-wise, compatible with other Breath Styles.

To see the whole list of Techniques for this Breath Style, you can find the information in this page: Breath of Dust.

History

Atsuya Yamauchi was born as Atsumichi Yamauchi, eldest child of the Yamauchi family, a Samurai Family who had some prominence in the Sengoku Era. Despite that, the Yamauchi clan had perservered for centuries until their decline during the start of the Meiji Era, being forced to abandon their original estate, a small castle which would then be occupied in the later Meiji Era. For around fifteen years, the Yamauchi family reclaimed their ancestral home.

Atsumichi, from the age of four, was taught in the family's old tradition. Despite the changing times, the Yamauchi family wanted to preserve their family history stemming from the samurai. When he was five, he was met with his newly born brother, Senichi Yamauchi. Atsumichi took to training well for the next two years, when the family had decided to separate and disperse. The decision was made due to the vulnerability of the family to the demons that lurked about, knowing full well that nobody of them were Demon Slayers and thus did not have Nichirin Blades. That, as well as the fear of the government coming up to force the Yamauchi family to disband on top of society's overall aversion to the samurai, still feeling the resentment towards such from the Meiji Area. Atsumichi was separated from his parents and younger brother, being brought to a Breath of Wind Cultivator at the age of 6.

The Cultivator was a family friend and was close to Atsumichi's grandfather. The cultivator trained Atsumichi in the basic techniques of sword fighting before determining if he was worthy enough to be taught the Breath of Wind. Realizing that Atsumichi may be wanted by the government for whatever reason (to take a child even!), he gave Atsumichi a new name, Atsuya. While it was close to his real name, it was not in the Yamauchi family record. It would be easy to say "coincidence". From then on, Atsumichi was Atsuya.

Atsuya was treated as the Cultivator's son, and was also educated under his tutelage. When Atsuya reached the age of 10, the cultivator, his adopted father, had decided that Atsuya had reached enough potential to begin learning the Breath of Wind. He believed Atsuya's training since age 4 was very helpful in his currently advanced level. Those learning Breath Styles would usually be around 12 to 13 years of age. Because of Atsuya's changing body, when he should have finished training at age 12, he finished at 13, when his body going through puberty was able to adjust enough.

During his Final Selection, Atsuya was looked down upon the rest of the participants, who were around 14 to 15 years of age. Being seen as a child, there was not much expectation for Atsuya to survive. However; during the Final Selection, Atsuya was able to develop a new Breath Style: the Breath of Dust, due to his rapid breathing and focus in quick movements. When he succeeded in the Final Selection, Atsuya took his time in the field to master his newly developed style.

Atsuya's age in entering the Demon Slayer Corps earned him some derision, and his surname attracted some unwanted attention over rumors of a recently dispersed samurai family. To prove himself, Atsuya took on more missions than was expected of him, and those who decided to run off in fear, leaving their fellow Slayers to die, Atsuya took them back to deal them some due punishment. He was seen as a bootlicker by a good number of Slayers, but he had always been thanked personally by his superiors and the leader, Kagaya Ubayashiki, for bringing back still living Slayers, albeit they tried to run away.

Aside his rise in ranks, Atsuya developed a special sort of role as a manhunter within the Demon Slayer Corps aside doing his own hunting. His task is to find deserters and confirm the status of missing personell. Due to numerous missions carried out all at once, Atsuya is expected to canvass all areas and take back whoever he can. All this, he was doing on his own. Despite his pleas to be given permission to get himself some staff, it was not granted to him, the explanation being that he is doing an efficient job on his own. Despite being senior to a good number of the Pillars, Atsuya remains in their shadow, working in coordination with them instead of aiming to become one.

Trivia

  • Atsuya is one of the Slayers who are in direct contact with the rest of the Pillars, who ask his help in retrieving missing personell as they have their hands full.
  • Nobody knows where Atsuya's base of operations is, and it is rumored that he gets paid extra for his work so he can be on the move and stay in inns.
  • A Taisho secret of Atsuya's is that he crossdresses, and he also uses this disguise to go undercover and find slayers in hiding. That, and that he just likes to feel feminine.
  • When Atsuya is tired, it will be easy for him to pass out in the middle of the road on occasion. More often than not, he's found himself waking up in Gekko Daikan's temple.
