Yoriie to Hantengu, Chapter 115

Yoriie Sekozawa (瀬古沢 頼家 Sekozawa Yori-ie) is a Demon Slayer in the Demon Slaying Corps. He later becomes the Eagle Pillar, replacing Kyojuro Rengoku after his death. Yoriie is also the former fiancee of the late Flower Pillar, Kanae Kocho.

Appearance

Yoriie is a tired looking young man standing at the impressive height of 6'3. He has a slender but toned figure. He has pale, pinkish skin, thick eyebrows and green eyes, which are then framed with a very thick array of eyelashes. Yoriie's thick hair is short and wavy, with a thin clump falling over his face and sweeping to the right. It is black, that gradients to a soft purple to white at the tips. It is worn in a half up-half down do, a tuft being visible from the top of his head. He has a noticeable dimple when he smiles; as well as his fingernails and toenails being painted a deep plum.

A notable trait of Yoriie is his feathery accessorization, wearing large feather earrings and a feather necklace to match. He wears a sleeveless version of the Demon Slayer uniform, with loose hakama pants. Over his uniform he wears a very loosely hanging black kimono with white, gold, and purple patterns seemingly to resemble the pattern on an eagle's wingspan. The kimono is very loosely worn over the top, exposing his shoulders and hanging around his elbows. The obi holding the kimono together is mauve in color, and fastening it is the standard uniform belt. Yoriie also has a lime knot decorating his obi, whose ends have feathers strung into them. He wears black open fingered gloves and dark geta with lime lacing. He does not wear tabi socks.

Personality

Yoriie is a very mellow and almost indifferent individual. He exudes an apathetic aura and almost always has a look of boredom on his face. At first glance, Yoriie can come off as imposing and snooty, and it usually makes others steer clear of him. It doesn't help that he has a very judgemental look in his eyes when he does pay attention to others, and if he's without a blank expression, a slight smirk or scowl is present. Because he is so mellow, Yoriie is incredibly calm and composed. It is common knowledge that Yoriie is not actually quick to anger.

A notable trait of Yoriie's is that he is incredibly fond of using sarcasm and dry humor, which he expresses by drawling out words. Yoriie is incredibly harsh when he uses his sarcasm on others. He's cheeky and smug and indifferent to how most others respond to him and his humor. He doesn't cut corners and can be harsh with his words, even going so far as to using a drawled out tone to emphasize points in a mocking manner. At almost any situation, Yoriie is known to respond with cheeky comments, while still being able to convey what he really means. Yoriie also seems to enjoy banter. When he is told he has gone too far with his comments, he is willing to recede with grace, albeit without much of an apology, if at all. At times when he is asked to be honest without his mocking tone, one will observe that Yoriie makes it a point to keep from actually being blunt, showing that he has an awareness of how harsh and cutthroat he can be when totally honest.

While always looking bored, Yoriie is actually more often than not, lost in thought. He is actually incredibly introspective and always mulls over the deicisions he's made thus far. This results in him dissociating on occasion. Yoriie is often trying to rationalize his own sadness and anger, not really remembering where these stemmed from. He is also shown to be sentimental, but distances himself as a habit which he feels is out of a guilt he could not explain. It is revealed that whenever he is close to remembering, he becomes irrational and uncontrollably sad, teetering on breakdowns if not fully breaking down before subsequently re-repressing his memories. His sentimental side shows when he thinks about what others have been through, and how far they've come to stay alive.

Weathered by life and waiting for death, Yoriie has a relatively negative opinion of himself. His knowledge of Slayer Marks and how those who have them do not live past 25 has made him complacent in waiting for death, making him incredibly reckless and sadistic in his fight against demons. He jokes about being at death's door, and that when he dies, he knows he's done enough. While not a victim of survivor's guilt, Yoriie looks at himself as undeserving of honors. Yoriie sizes down his own achievements for the mere fact that his Breath Style was self-taught, and worries that it is looked down upon. He has difficulty processing compliments, but he doesn't deflect them unless he feels they size him up too much.

Yoriie had supressed in himself the desire to fight for those he values. Upon news of Kyojuro Rengoku's death, his sheer grief caused his repressed memories to return, reminding him why he even stayed in the Demon Slayers. This also reveals that Yoriie takes others' dying wishes to heart, and this is the driving force that makes him realize that he cannot wait for people to die to listen to them. This later reveals that Yoriie was a warmer person, who was more receptive and playfully teasing instead of harshly sarcastic. Yoriie's gradual warmth towards others stemmed from realizing he was pushing away what he was trying so hard to protect. His change of attitude has him wanting to repent for being so distant. He also is shown to warm up to Tanjiro, and begins treating his own Tsugukos better.

Abilities and Powers

Natural Abilities

  • Eagle Eye: Yoriie's sense of sight is very curious, seeing as he has incredibly sharp vision. His 'eagle eye' is likely also a weird manifestation of farsightedness, being able to pinpoint objects, landmarks and people from large distances.
  • Incredible Speed: Yoriie's speed in battle is astounding, being able to strike demons before the latter even notices they have been struck or beheaded.
  • Wind Navigation: A very strange ability of Yoriie's is that he can determine where he should go, and make educated guesses of what he will find, based on the direction of the wind. This has likely come from his experience from fishing out at sea. Using this ability has also allowed him to sense demons moving towards him.
  • Enhanced Agility and Reflexes: Yoriie possesses incredible reflexes and agility. Coupled with his speed, he is able to dodge attacks and strike back even faster. His Agility and reflexes make up for his lack of physical strength.
  • Demon Slayer Mark: Yoriie's Demon Slayer Mark manifests as swirling tattoos that start from his neck to his collarbone, appear as bands on his arms and then on the backs of his hands, stretching over his fingers. His nails also notably turn black when his Demon Slayer Mark is activated.

Swordsmanship

Breath of the Eagle (鷲 の 呼吸 Washi no kokyū ):

The Breath of the Eagle is a personal Breath Style created by Yoriie. Though it is a self-taught Breath Style similar to the Breath of the Beast, it is branched from the Breath of Wind. The Breath Style deals with leg power and the ability to fight while airborne. The Breath of the Eagle's techniques deal with dives, twirls, flips and downward strikes. The breath style's airborne maneuvers require high agility and flexibility.

History

Yoriie was born as the younger twin of a fisherman and a trader in a fishing village in the northern regions of Japan. While it wasn't remote, it was not commercial either. The village flourishes under good trade, allowing Yoriie and his older twin sister, Yuri, to live with relative comfort. However, Yoriie fell in and out of sickness quite frequently, having him help his mother do trade while his sister spent time at sea with their father. Eventually, to keep Yoriie in normal health, the local village healer had suggested different exercises before resorting to medicine. If it failed, then Yoriie would have to be seen by an actual doctor. Yoriie did try to help his physical condition, but what helped it was his breathing. He felt the difference, and his times of sickness decreased significantly. Eventually, he was able to join his sister and father sailing and fishing.

Yoriie quickly took to the seas, and it was here he discovered his unique eyesight. He was able to spot exactly where the most fish were, allowing his family to always have a good catch. This happens even in foggy and unclear weather. Health-wise, it was as if Yoriie was never sickly in the past, showing impressive resilience and health in bad weather. His breathing contributed to his health, which also improved his physical capabilities. He and his sister continued sailing with their father until Yuri, his sister, had to take after their mother in trading as she fell ill. Curiously, other villagers have started falling ill. Unknowing to the village, this was the work of a Demon's Blood Art. The demon was making people sick and then slowly feeding off their life force. Yoriie's mother was one of its' first victims.

How this demon was found was through Yoriie's sense of sight, able to see indicators of inhuman traits in an outsider he saw during the night when he returned with his father from sea. When most of the village had fallen ill, the demon struck, only to be distracted by an eagle, which attacked it. Yoriie, the mere age of 13, along with other able-bodied villagers, took to fighting the demon. However; the demon grew strong and devoured some of its assailants. The first time Yoriie's Breath Style manifested was when he was fighting the demon with only a kama. He was injured in the fight, but managed to save his father from a blow and helped the villagers string the incapacitated demon. Soon after, Demon Slayers arrived late, and took the demon from there, beheading it. The village, as thanks, treated these slayers well for finishing the work for them, and had them stay in the village for a few days while the Slayers also helped attend to the sick and recovering.

Fearing another demon's attack, some villagers sent their children to be trained under these Slayers, who were baffled that these people would go to such lengths. However; these children had lost loved ones to the demons' attack, to them, the least they could do was to learn how to properly deal with demons lest they attack again. Yoriie was one of the children who went on his own accord, promising his sister and father that he will write home, and he'll protect them. The children were then sent to different trainers, and Yoriie was sent to a Breath of Water trainer. However; he was rejected, as he already had a Breath Style of his own and that he should hone it instead of learning a Breath Style that was potentially incompatible with him. Yoriie was forced to return to the village, and trained there instead. Here, he discovered his affinity for aerial attacks and his ability to maneuver well in mid-air. Eventually, he deemed himself ready when another demon attacked a few months later, wherein Yoriie singlehandedly dealt with it himself thanks to developing his own Breath Style. More attacks had come in for the next year and a half, and Yoriie was able to help defend the village. A Kasugai Crow, revealed to be Kagaya Ubayashiki's, later sent him a message to officiate his demon slaying, by joining the Demon Slayer Corps through the Final Selection.

Discussing the matter with his father and sister, they have told him that he is their pride and joy, and that he is strong enough to do it. They have faith in him, and that his mother would be happy to see how strong he had become. They had no doubts that Yoriie would make it, as he already killed a demon on his own, and was at the forefront during the first attack. He had to promise one thing: to write home. It didn't seem too hard, and with that, Yoriie went off to the Final Selection. He felt singled out, especially when others found he had a self-taught Breath Style. While it was met with some derision, Yoriie had to remind himself that he was there for a reason. He managed to save most of the participants there, and only was too late to save two or three. That year, Yoriie Sekozawa became an official Demon Slayer at age 15.

For a while, Yoriie was a lone wolf, still mulling over how harshly he was treated for having a self-taught Breath Style. Instead of taking it, Yoriie remained open to others while working hard to prove them wrong. He didn't care about rank, he cared about proper recognition for it. He was unaware of his own rise in rank and improvement. What mattered was killing demons, doing his work right, and most of all, surviving. His missions same with increasing risk and difficulty up until Yoriie was sent on missions to assist Pillars. Kagaya Ubayashiki kept a close watch on Yoriie's performance, noting his rapidly increasing kill streak. What had Ubayashiki consider Yoriie as a Pillar candidate was him killing the previous Lower Moon 2 and 4, the fight with the latter of which was the catalyst for Yoriie awakening his Demon Slayer Mark. Yoriie; however, declined humbly, reasoning that he wasn't ready for the responsibility. With understanding, Ubayashiki mentioned he would be hoping that Yoriie would accept one day. He still sent Yoriie on high profile missions and had sent him to assist in watching over a seaside district. At the age of 20, Yoriie was named a Pillar Candidate.

Trivia

  • Yoriie's assigned district, even before becoming a Pillar, was a coastal town. Kagaya Ubayashiki took note of Yoriie's yearning for the sea, and thus assigned him there.
  • As expected, Yoriie is an incredible fisherman and sailor. It's never a dull moment being with him at sea. He's very at home there, and shows a certain serentity about him when in the open waters.
  • Sometimes, Yoriie is seen waist-deep in rivers, catching fish. With his sickle. Yes, he can actually catch fish like that.
  • Yoriie is particularly sadistic with demons, unleashing his repressed rage by making their deaths slow. His favorite method is hooking them with his sickle, hang them with a chain, and poke at the demons with his blade.
  • Another favorite method is cutting the demon's arms and legs legs, bring them to their knees, then continuously cut, stab and slash at their torso and head with his sickle. Then, he hooks his sickle into their neck, then beheads the demon.
  • Yoriie's bird companion is a Steller's Sea Eagle, whom he named Washi. Because Washi is so huge, he also joins in the fray of battle. If Washi will strike a demon out of nowhere, that is an indicator that Yoriie is following up with an attack of his own.
  • Washi can speak normally, and he shares the same sassy mouth as Yoriie. The both of them often get into banter. Washi is devoted to Yoriie despite this, and vows to keep him safe.
  • Other Kasugai Crows are terrified of Washi, only because he's humongous. Yoriie makes it a point that Washi doesn't torment the poor crows.
  • Yoriie expresses extreme pain and melancholy over being called 'dad' or 'father', even as a joke. He doesn't want to remember that he could have been one nor the what-ifs if Kanae lived and they started a family.
  • His quote to Upper Moon 2 Douma, "What evil lurks... I must destroy." is a direct reference to V from Devil May Cry 5. I'm not even hiding it, y'all.
  • Yoriie's laugh sounds uncomfortably dark, and whenever he does, it seems to bring chills down one's spine. Yoriie himself doesn't mean to sound that way, because he really just does.
  • He keeps two boxes filled with letters from his sister, father and friends from his hometown. The first box is chock full of letters, while the second one is half full. Washi delivers these letters.
  • Yoriie and Washi are literally just V and Griffon. I had to do it, man.
