Kinji Hirohata (広端 勤爾 Hirohata Kinji) is a Kinoto ranked Demon Slayer in the Demon Slaying Corps. He is also the Tsuguko of the Wind Pillar, Sanemi Shinazugawa.

Appearance

Kinji is incredibly androgynous, often being mistaken as a woman despite his taller stature. Despite having a thin frame, Kinji is very well toned. He has fair skin with peach undertones, with a very feminine face. His eyes are teal to mint green, and lined with long lashes. There is a scar that goes in an upward diagonal direction from his left cheek. Kinji is noted to wear some lip tint and pink eyeshadow. He has long, thick mint green hair that become near white at the tips. His bangs are slightly brushed to the right, while he has two thick clumps framing his face. He has braided sides that end at a knot, whose ends stick out from the top of his head. He has blue painted nails.

He wears a light green variant of the Demon Slayer uniform, with a black jinbei kimono wrapped over it. His top is tucked into his pants, which are notably tighter and more form-fitting than the usual hakama pants. Kinji's haori is an off-white green, with ochre and lime greem gradients at the bottom. On the gradients are white reed patterns. His sleeves and haori have a thick medium green lining adorned with white reed leaves. Kinji wraps a dark green obi and ochre twine fastening the obi around his haori, showing off his slender figure. He wears open black open-fingered gloves, black bands of cloth that wrap around his calves, and black tabi. His footwear are geta sandals.

Personality

When first introduced, Kinji comes off as a silent, but polite and easily excitable individual. His silent demeanor was rather similar to Kanao Tsuyuri, with the exception that he was much more receptive and initiated 'conversation' albeit he communicated with nonverbal cues and sign language. Due to his excitable nature, Kinji also comes off as intrusive to others, more often than not butting into others business and staying even when he should not be. He also interrupts others with his presence, but allows other to continue the conversation with him around. Kinji also has the tendency to act meek and demure when he wants something, revealing that he is very well aware of his feminine appearance and how he can use it on others. He uses this facade on unassuming people.

His silence is a front for a much more mischeivous personality. Kinji loves to elicit reactions from others, especially by sneaking up on them or literally using his appearance to pull antics. His mischief is coupled with a rather happy-go-lucky attitude wherein Kinji doesn't seem to take most things seriously at all. He purposely gets into other's spaces and bothers them. Kinji can adopt a gremlin-like personality and be purposely annoying and on occasion, aggressively flirtatious, but he'd rather annoy people than be awkward with them. Whether people like it or not, Kinji will be up in their face, also because he likes the company. He is also noted to be particularly touchy with others. It gets noted by Tanjiro that Kinji's annoying attitude with others is actually him being comfortable around others.

His mischievous personality also bleeds into his work as a slayer. He likes taunting demons and faking his attacks to scare and aggravate them. He is not easily scared by demons either, telling them to try harder. During battle, Kinji displays an unbridled aggression and foul mockery of his opponents, a trait of Sanemi's that has rubbed off on him.

Despite his carefree personality, Kinji does not disregard hard work and firmly believes in reaping its rewards. He is actually rather humble about his status and achievements, and he himself doesn't pay much attention to them because he's too preoccupied with catching up on his own training. He's a surprisingly dedicated worker as a result of his own self-awareness that he is not a talented swordsman. Kinji feels he must compensate for his lack of talent with dedication, something he may end up projecting on others when training is involved. Kinji's one real fear is failure, and in his head, death means failure. Not reaching the bar he set for himself is failure. Not living up to his promises is failure. Kinji likes to act like nothing fazes him, and he doesn't end up seeking help to work through nor address his insecurities.

Kinji's annoying personality with others helps ground him and give him a sense of normalcy in his line of work. He hates small talk and though he will not admit it, is very easily given to caring for others. Kinji is also not used to being soft with others and finds it awkward trying to voice how he feels for someone. He makes his intentions and care known through actions and physical presence, and he only hopes that others can pick up. Not being given to verbalizing his honest feelings, Kinji tries his best when he feels words would matter.
He also has a known, but uncommonly occuring explosive temper. Kinji is not usually given to anger nor rage, and it takes a lot for him to blow his top. When he finally gets irritated, he becomes a ticking time bomb and his episodes are rather jarring to witnesses. Though Kinji is not one for violence, he does tend to lash out once he snaps. However; these episodes are not particularly long, and Kinji is easy to regret his outlashes.

Abilities and Powers

Natural Abilities

• Enhanced Sense of Touch: Kinji has a very particular sense of touch, as he feels pulses and can thus deduce from feeling and observation how someone feels. He can also sense if someone bleeding out can still be saved or not. He notes that demons have strange pulses, and their blood flow and temperature can drastically change. With this ability, he can predict how fast a demon can regenerate.
• Incredible Speed: A result from very rigorous training on his own and under Sanemi. Kinji, compared to other slayers, has powerful leg work and speed that even impresses Upper Moons.
• Enhanced Endurance: Being the number one victim of constant "Shinazugawa Beatdowns" as a result of being Sanemi's Tsuguko, Kinji has developed very impressive endurance. With endurance comes an incredible pain tolerance, and Kinji is known to not flinch unless dealt a powerful blow.
• Enhanced Agility and Reflexes: Kinji's incredibly harsh training has honed his reflexes and agility. These, coupled with his speed, make him a difficult target for demons.
• Swordsmanship: Kinji's sworsmanship is unorthodox. His specialized sword and one-handed fighting style is almost dance-like in nature.

Swordsmanship

The Breath of Reeds is a personal Breath Style created by Kinji. It is branched from the Breath of Wind. The Breath Style focuses more on speed and the user's light-footedness. Due to Kinji's use of a Jintachi rather than a regular Tachi or Katana, the forms of the Breath Style are dance-like in nature, utilizing fluid, agile movements. The Breath Style's techniques and the way it is utilized by Kinji is said to emit whistling sounds whenever he swings his sword.

History

Kinji was found by the riverbed near a farming village as an infant. He was saved by two farmers who went out to fetch some water when they heard his cries. His mother's body was found in the river, as she supposedly drowned herself. Taking pity for him, the couple took him back to the village. There was no cloth nor paper that had his name written on it, so he was then named Kinji, to mean 'service'.

His early childhood was rather decent. He grew up in the farming village with his adoptive parents and adoptive older sister. Despite being adopted and his appearance known to be jarringly different, he was treated with the same love and respect a parent would give a child. He grew up close with his sister, Kiriko, who was mute. To better communicate with her and ensure that Kiriko didn't feel singled out, he learned nonverbal communication and sign language. From this, Kinji had likely developed his sense of touch wherein he can discern someone's emotions based from their pulse and blood flow, which made it easy for him to understand and know his sister's feelings. This blended into his interactions with others as well.

One night when he was around 11, Kinji was by the river playing with other children when Kinji sensed a bunch of Demon Slayers passing by the area. While he didn't sense any malice, he sensed great concern from the people that passed by, telling the children to immediately go home as it was very dangerous. The slayers, being in a hurry, went their way. The children remained by the river and promised to go home together before it got too dark. However; Kinji's keen senses made his blood run cold, and something was wrong at home. He urged the other children to go home with him, and they all eventually agreed, disgruntled and upset that Kinji cut their recreation short.

When they returned; however, the village was under attack. It was not a demon attack, no, but bandits. They set the crops on fire, and started ransacking houses. The men were being killed, and women were being taken. Kinji desperately tried to find his sister and his parents, only to be taken by a bandit who mistook him as a girl. He was shown to the other bandits, and was kidnapped and put in a caravan. There was his sister and many other girls. Being mistaken as a girl, Kinji took the opportunity to stay close to his sister and promise her that they'd escape somehow. These girls were to be sold in the Red Light District.

Kinji and his sister were sold to different houses, and he lost contact with her. The ladies running the brothel were furious and felt scammed that they were sold a young boy. However; they figured that there would be customers who would pay for that sort of thing, and decided to train him. Kinji only complied out of fear, as long as he was given a warm bed and fed. When he was done with training, he would run around to find his sister. To his dismay, she was nowhere to be found. However; she was eventually foound. She died. She was brutally killed. Though it was assumed that it was an unhappy customer, it was because of a demon. More girls started turning up dead. Eventually, the demon came to the brothel Kinji resided in, and almost killed more girls until Slayers came to and killed the demon. Kinji personally came face to face with the demon, and it was him who was saved in particular. The salyers who saved him were the same ones that warned him and his friends a few months ago to return home. Kinji was also recognized, and out of pity, was taken away from the Red Light District. The Slayers intended to leave him at a temple in the next town over, where he would be safer.

However; Kinji wouldn't go quietly. He refused to go to a temple where he would live in fear. The Slayers had assumed that Kinji was an awestruck child after being saved; up until Kinji snaps at them that he wants to join them because he didn't want to be afraid anymore. He then breaks down and reveals that he could have saved his sister, knowing full well she was killed by the demon that attacked rather than an unhappy customer. Even with the Slayer's protests, Kinji did not budge. Eventually, they did give up on trying to bring Kinji to a temple, and one of them settled to bring Kinji to his former master. He was warned; however, that if Kinji couldn't handle it, he shouldn't push it, and find refuge in a temple. Kinji vowed that he will never prove them right.

Kinji was brought to one of the Slayer's masters, who was a Breath of Wind user. It was very difficult for Kinji to master the style, but he pushed. He was a very dedicated student, and pushed himself even more than what was expected of him. He'd train to the point of injury, and was forced to stop for a moment when his master found he trained until he hacked up blood. The master noted that Kinji was not innately talented, but his dedication made up for his lack of it. In a little over a year, Kinji was sent to the Final Selection, albeit his master was very concerned, allowing a boy who was barely 13 to be allowed into the Final Selection. Kinji survived, and was able to save a few others in his batch, keeping them alive. However; soon after Kinji received his Nichirin Blade, he hacked up blood and was sent to the Butterfly Estate. Eventually it was determined that the Breath of Wind was not compatible with his body, and that he would have to figure an offset of the Breath Style for himself.

In the middle of missions, Kinji tried developing a Breath Style that wouldn't be painfully taxing on his body. Eventually, he came up with the Breath of Reed. However, due to his need to develop a new Breath Style, his progress in promotion suffered considerably, keeping him at a very low rank for another year and a half. However; once he mastered his own new Breath Style, Kinji rose up in ranks through his own dedication.

What made Kinji decide to train under a Pillar was a friend he made who wanted to become a Pillar. This friend sized Kinji up, saying that his dedication and own strength could be great as a Pillar. Touched, they both tried to earn an audience with Sanemi Shinazugawa, then just newly inaugurated a few months ago. Kinji's friend quickly gave up after a few beatdowns, but Kinji was not having any of Sanemi's verbal abuse and threats, irritated that the latter seemed to take his position to heart rather than wanting to prove himself that he could be a worthy Pillar candidate. No matter how many times Kinji was beat down, he came back stronger after short intervals. Though Sanemi will not admit it, Kinji's rapid improvement despite the beatdowns was rather impressive. He accepted, but masked his impression with giving in since Kinji wouldn't quit. Since the age of 16, Kinji has been Sanemi Shinazugawa's Tsuguko.

Trivia

• Kinji's impressive strength, speed and agility is not from talent, but from a very strong dedication to become stronger. Despite this, he is mostly mistaken to be talented, a compliment he tends to politely deflect.
• Kinji once bragged that he could withstand Tanjiro's headbutts to jokingly spite Sanemi. Well, he thought he did, until his nose started bleeding and he got a concussion.
• While Kinji is officially Sanemi's Tsuguko, due to the latter's relations with fellow Pillars Gonpachiro Kamaboko (HermesYap) and Masaki Ariwara, Kinji has recieved training from both on occasion.
• Kinji makes time to go to Gekko's Temple to pray for his late sister.
• Despite Kinji's playful flirting, touchy tendencies and feminine features, any mention of sending him to the Red Light District for missions will actually send him into a panic.
• Kinji has found himself a penchant for dancing, and he does practice during his free time. The practice helps him with breathing exercises as well.
• He also carries a Nichirin Tessen around, but he doesn't really have a use for it in demon hunting. It's merely for aesthetic and practical reasons.
