Mikumo Kuromachi (蔵後 美雲 Kuromachi Mikumo) is a Tsuchinoe ranked Demon Slayer in the Demon Slaying Corps. She is revealed to be the Tsuguko of the Mist Pillar, Muichiro Tokito, and has been since the Asakusa Arc.

Appearance

Mikumo is a young woman of average height and well-toned build. She has a very notably girlish look with pale, peachy skin and notable rosy lips. She has big eyes lines with a thick array of eyelashes. She seems to have some form of segmental heterochromia, as her eyes are pink and cut off to chartreuse. She has long hair that starts to wave halfway down, and is evenly cut at the ends. Her hair is brown, cutting off jaggedly to a warm pink that graidents to cream. Her hair is sectioned in a way that she manages to keep most of her hair out of her face, tying her hair in a half up half down style, the updo being a knot while the rest of her hair falls free.

She wears the standard Demon Slayer Uniform, with the exception of the skirt in place of the hakama pants. Holding her uniform together is a mauve obi and the standard uniform belt. Hanging from the left side of her belt is a charry blossom ornament she kept as keepsake from her eldest sister. She wears black arm warmers with red twine. Her leg warmers are pink to plum, held by the same red twine. Mikumo wears a large haori, gradiating from a soft pink to plum. Its designs consist of cranes in the form of a Mon, with lined clouds spanning the lower half of her sleeves and haori.

Personality

Mikumo comes off as a girl trying too hard to be polite. She is easily seen through her overly nice attitude upon meeting others, though she will say that it's really her trying to be courteous and simply wishes to make a good impression with people. Despite her overly polite front, Mikumo is actually a girl who means well for others, although not in the soft, gentle kind of way. She tries to not show herself immediately for a reason.

In actuality, Mikumo is a stubborn and upfront young woman, not afraid to call others out when they fall out of line and will not hesitate to get physical. As this "uncalled for behavior" earns her some derision from others, Mikumo works to correct this. However; when the case calls for it, she will not hesitate to call others out. She has difficulty trying to not sound holier than thou when she falls into these behaviors, as she really is trying to convey that she is coming from a place of care and kindness. When she becomes familiar with someone, it is easy to see that she starts the conversation and is rather sociable, albeit that she may end up showing some crass the more familiar and comfortable she gets with someone.

Being forced to become independent and self-reliant, Mikumo finds it to be a pet peeve at able bodied yet mentally helpless Slayers. While she can understand their fear, as one never knows if they will face a powerful demon, she dislikes certain behaviors helpless slayers display that will ultimately jeopardize everyone else. This being said, Mikumo otherwise admires slayers who, despite their rank, takes initiative and continue to push. She finds value in bravery and initiative.

Mikumo can be a little judgemental, especially with equally stubborn people. She tries to be fair to everyone, but she is sometimes clouded by judgement, and will act and speak accordingly, mostly in exasperation. Depending on the person, it is either easy or difficult to change Mikumo's view on them. However; this doesn't mean that Mikumo actively tries to see the best in others. With Demons, Mikumo spares no feelings, and is openly vindictive against them. This is obviously deep rooted in her losing all her family except her older half-brother to demons. Her opinions on demons are not of them as rabid animals, but of people who chose the easy way out, and she sees them as cowards who didn't care about the consequences of their choices. She views killing demons as a favor to them, to end their misery. However; as with most of the cast, Nezuko is an exception, once Mikumo understood her circumstances and has properly interacted with her. Despite Nezuko, Mikumo remaind vindictive to other demons that is not her.

She is also shown to be quite jealous of other's circumstances, especially those whom she had deemed lucky. To her, she feels that she still hasn't worked hard enough to deserve good enough circumstances, feeding into a growing fear of inadequacy and an inferiority complex. She pushes herself unto others in order to feel 'enough' and to feel that she is worthy enough for goodness. Her stubborn, independent personality is fueled by her jealousy and her inferiority complex. Despite these feelings, Mikumo is never one to wish harm unto others.

However; with more interactions and missions alongside Tanjiro and company, Mikumo finds herself in a circle wherein she is comfortable and can soften up to others, showing a more relaxed side of her. She is able to show a more playful and childish side of her, being the responsible one for so long. Mikumo herself expresses that she feels happy being able to be this way with others, as it gives her a sense of normalcy despite her line of work. This gives Mikumo an opportunity to show that she really is someone who means well for people, but her circumstances make her show it in ways that may be unsavory for others.

Abilities and Powers

Natural Abilities

• Heightened Sense of Hearing: Mikumo has always had a good sense of hearing, being able to hear even the smallest noises from a distance to weed out disturbances. Similarly to Zenitsu Agatsuma, she can distinguish the unique sound of demons.
• Swordsmanship: Despite being a mid-rank Slayer, Mikumo has well-refined swordsmanship, well enough to wield an ōdachi despite her own stature. She is also very sharp in battle, being able to maintain her form and composure despite her heavy weapon.
• Enhanced Strength: Aside carrying a huge sword on her back, Mikumo has incredible strength for her appearance. She is easily able to toss someone out of her way or even carry someone on her back or in her arms for extended periods of time. She is also able to physically hold off demons with heavy blows.
• Enhanced Endurance: Coupled with Mikumo's strength is her endurance. Even if she is tossed aorund by a demon, she can come out of it pretty fine as well as comeback with just as much stamina.
• Range Advantage: Mikumo's Breath Style and general fighting style gives her a huge range advantage, being able to clear out an area or deflect attacks that affect larger areas.

Swordsmanship

The Breath of Cloud is a personal breath style developed by Mikumo Kuromachi. It is derived from the Breath of Wind, a breath style Mikumo was not able to properly master. The breath style's techniques consist of longer range, powerful slashing blows. The style is meant to cover more ground while swinging the blade, requiring powerful legwork and arm coordinations. Attacks are not strung in quick succession, but the powerful blows from this breath style are enough to stagger or even behead demons.

History

Mikumo is the youngest of six children in the military Kuromachi family. Mikumo grew up with a large family consisting of her father Heisuke, his two wives, and her biological maternal grandmother. Being born in the city under an influential family, Mikumo lived in great prestige and was given quality education. Her family was very invovled with each other and the community, although her father did it to keep in favor with the people of Japan. Mikumo did not know of her father's corruption growing up.

Being exposed to western culture that was seeping into Japan at the time, Mikumo was considered to be living ahead of her time in a more progressive society. Despite this, she was babied and sheltered, as she was in fact, the youngest of six siblings. Her brothers and sisters sheltered her more than her own mother, stepmother, grandmother and father. She was the treasure of her family, and it came to a point she was practically spoiled.

However; her sheltered lifestyle changed when her family fell into scandal, and her father was put out of power. Quickly, she saw the quick regression of his physical and mental health. He had become desperate, demanding, and verbally abusive towards her older brothers, whom he expected to take after him immediately. Extremely distraught over the immense loss of power and influence on top of his illness, Heisuke Kuromachi became desperate to find a cure. Mikumo had to learn to take responsibility in helping her father recover, starting to work with her family in communicating with doctors and keeping financial records, careful they were not to go bankrupt.

As the Kuromachi family found themselves almost hopeless with local doctors, they took to western medicine. Hanae, one of Mikumo's older sisters found a doctor that could possibly help their dying father. The doctor claimed to have studied in Europe, and was happy to help the Kuromachi family. However; to Mikumo, this man gave a "different sound", yet she didn't know how to explain it. However; it did seem that the doctor was indeed trying to heal her father. Until one night, Mikumo's father went on a rampage and killed her grandmother. Her older sisters, trying to retrain him and one of her mothers trying to call the police, were all killed by her father's bare hands. He had become a demon. The doctor in question was Muzan Kibutsuji, who offered her father a cure for him to maintain power and redeem himself.

Mikumo was taken by her older half-brother, Eijiro, to go hide. Eijiro managed to save one of her older sisters, Mamiko, as well. When they reported to the police, they were jeered at, being told they were insane and that they did murder the rest of their family, the proof being the bloodstains on their clothes. When they were tried, they were declared insane and thrown in a mental ward at a local hospital, where they were to be investigated and tried at a later date. The three siblings pleaded that they weren't insane, and that if they wanted proof, send the police to their home. Police were in fact, sent to the Kuromachi home, never to return.

Before anything else could happen to the siblings, Mikumo managed to escape, taking her brother and sister with her. They fled into the fringes of the city, eventually arriving at a rural town. Without money or food, they ended up in the streets, and her older siblings agues over the sister having to sell herself just to have food on the table. Begrudgingly, her brother agreed, understanding that they were starving. Mikumo offered to help, too, but he adamantly refused to let the then 12 year old Mikumo sell herself. Eijiro himself tried to find odd jobs here and there to help. Mikumo was to do the errands while her siblings earned money.

It wasn't long before her sister Mamiko contracted an STD, and was unable to sell herself anymore. It became difficult for Eijiro to work as well. Eventually came a time of rumors of street beggars disappearing in the dead of night. While the townspeople said it was a good thing, Mikumo came to hear of the same "strange noises" she heard from home. Knowing where these noises were coming from, she and her siblings managed to keep out of trouble despite her sister's quickly declining health. However; the demon eventually caught up with them, and injured Mikumo's older brother. They were; however, saved by a Slayer in a scarf and another older Slayer. After being saved, the two Slayers took Mikumo's sister to a doctor, seeing as she was unwell and her two siblings taking care of her. The injured Eijiro was also taken to a doctor, while Mikumo was allowed to stay with her siblings in the doctor's clinic. Now with two of her siblings ill, Mikumo decided to give up her dignity if it meant earning to save them.

She decided to sell herself, even at that young age. The first man to approach her was the same older Slayer who saved her, demanding to know what she was doing. Mikumo refused to explain her situation, afraid she would be thrown into a mental ward again or be deemed insane. The older slayer knew what she was talking about, and asked where her siblings were. While still being cared for, her sister was quickly declining in health while her brother was steadily recovering. When he was in good enough shape, he and Mikumo were taken by the older slayer. They; however, waited for Mikumo's older sister to pass away, seeing as she was too far gone in her illness.

Understanding that both were in contact with demons, the older Slayer decided to take in both Kuromachi siblings as students. Despite their protests, they could not deny what they witnessed, so Mikumo and Eijiro took to learning the Breath of Wind under this cultivator. While her brother steadily worked his way up in the Breath Style, Mikumo couldn't master it even with her brother's help. In frustration, she ended up creating her own Breath Style that focused on different, but slightly similar technique and movements. This new developed breath style of hers ended up more compatible with her body, and on her own, managed to surpass her brother's level in no time, taking all her anger out in training. At the age of 15, Mikumo and her brother Eijiro were sent to the Final Selection, both of which survived. Their master noted Mikumo's fighting style was better catered to the ōdachi, and thus had one made for her rather than the regular katana. Mikumo's Nichirin Blade changed in color, giving off a gray-blue hue, while her brother's did not. The origin of the demons, and what likely happened to their father. This started Mikumo's strong disdain for demons, not because of Muzan, but because her father chose to throw away his humanity for what? Power.

Her brother ultimately decided to not become a Slayer, seeing as he didn't reach the level of strength for the blade to change in color, unlike Mikumo. However; he was proud of his sister, seeing her become independent and stronger. He instead helped take in and care for civilians who have been injured dueing encounters with Demons. Mikumo decided to take it upon herself to keep her brother alive, and when the time came, to end her father's misery.

Trivia

• Mikumo is strong enough that she is able to full on fist fight Inosuke Hashibira for an extended time. Now, she can full of catch his hands when he goes all "PIG ASSAULT"
• Her older brother Eijiro will always tell people what Mikumo was like before she became a Slayer, even though it embarrasses her.
• Mikumo had to come to the Butterfly Estate once for a bad hand injury caused by punching Tanjiro's forehead. This happened prior to the Mount Natagumo Arc.
• Despite being mid-rank, Mikumo still opts to go to lower rank missions to help with the Mizunoto and to make sure most come back alive.
• Her brother hints that Mikumo only became independent after she became a Slayer, because now she's the one taking care of him.
• Mikumo used to be a bad cook, but since living on her own, she's learned to cook something decent, at least.
• Her Kasugai Crow's name is O-Kiku, and she wears a pink ribbon with a cherry blossom ornament.
• As of Chapter 130, Mikumo has been promoted to the rank of Hinoto.
