About

TITLE: Moon Drunk Hunter

HALO: Blood and teeth

Calm and levelheaded, Hugo often finds himself taking the lead in times of crisis. During hunts, he almost always works alone, which has led to a belief that he is the only one he can put any faith in. He's not afraid to take calculated risks if the payout is good enough. He has two modes essentially: Hunting Mode, which is calm, calculating, and incredibly competent, and Disaster Mode, which is overly reckless, and cold as ice. He gets stuck in his own head a lot, and it's hard to get him to talk. He tends to be kind of a prick to people he cares about; it's his weird, backwards way of showing affection. If he raises his voice at all, it means he cares. I guess. He's not very good at emotions. He. He doesn't have many friends. Between the jackassery and the borderline hermit tendencies, it's a miracle that people even talk to him. The lycanthropy probably doesn't help either. He's a silent adrenaline junkie; the more dangerous the hunt, the more likely he is to risk his life to bring it down. His humor is very dry and morbid. He'll walk into some of the most depressing, horrifying places, and then make some offhand comment about them feeling like home to him. He's been in the game long enough for most shit to just roll off his shoulders. Very little truly fazes him anymore. What he lacks in a welcoming personality he more than makes up in with his dependability. If Hugo tells you he's going to do something, you could stake your life on it. He always follows through. He is also a surprisingly good teacher. If someone came to him and asked him to teach them about what he does, he'd be more than happy to indulge them. His patience is infinite. Right up until it isn't. Not the worst person to hang around, but you could do so much better.

BIO

Hugo has devoted his life to the Hunt. He comes from an ancient and prestigious family of monster hunters, and he is the youngest one to take up the mantle. He's had run-ins with everything from beasts and demons to incomprehensible Old Gods. If something needs to be put in its place, you bet your ass that Hugo is on the case. He very rarely talks about his family. If pressed, all he'll say is that they were also Hunters, but that's it. Most of his past is shrouded in a meticulously crafted fog, and there's no sign of that ever changing. He claims that he's just a schmuck with a big scythe and an incredible force of will. What isn't voiced is the silent challenge, like he's almost daring people to question him. Nobody ever does. His name is well known, and his family's reputation precedes him. Anyone who carries the Korzha name is someone to be respected, and Hugo is no exception.

General Backstory Stuff

  • Parents are named Gabriel and Antanasia. Brother was going to be named Virgil.
  • His younger brother was stillborn, so his parents sometimes told him that he had to be a good enough hunter for two people.
  • His parents were still in his life, but tended to treat him more like an adult than a child. They want him to be strong enough to succeed them and carry on the Korzha tradition, but what they have failed to realize is that this is a literal child they’re teaching.
  • Hugo is used to being seen as a disappointment. He’s kinda stopped caring that he doesn’t live up to their standards or whatever. It’s when people tell him that they’re not disappointed in him is when he’s surprised.
  • He doesn’t call them abusive because they never lifted a hand against him. Neglectful is a more appropriate term. If it didn’t involve continuing the family tradition, it was often cast to the side.
  • This is in part due to how his parents were raised, and how that over time, as the Korzha clan became smaller and smaller, the code tended to be more heavily enforced. The sense of honor was overtaken by the sense of obligation. It became more of a job than a badge of honor/mantle.
  • Hugo wants to change this. He’s read the history of his family, and he wants it to return to the way it was, before everyone became so cold. Why is everyone so cold?

Young Hugo Stuff – Age 18-19

  • “Hi my name is Hugo and hurt people by bleeding on them.”
  • Still essentially a sullen teenager. Just a Grade A unapologetic asshole. This doesn’t actually change over time; he just talks less as he gets older.
  • Burgeoning lycanthropy is bringing on Puberty 2: Electric Spookaloo. And he’s not having a good time. Comes with rapid mood swings and angry outbursts.
  • He both takes his job too seriously and not seriously enough. He approaches everything completely on guard; trusts absolutely no one, and questions literally everything.
  • He also tends to view it more as a parental obligation than something to be taken seriously.
  • He is still pretty much a child. He’s never had any friends, and little interaction with people beyond his family and whatever tutors they hired to teach him.
  • Legitimately likes animals more than people.
  • So his attitude is basically sullen angry teenager, but bass boosted by poor socialization and unresolved anger at his specific situation.
  • It’s hard to tell when he’s being serious and when he’s joking. He says everything in the same tone.
  • His humor is very dry and morbid. Shit just kinda rolls off his shoulders.
  • That scythe is his baby. It’s the weapon he grew up using, passed down through generation after generation of hunters. It traditionally goes from parent to oldest child when the child is old enough to begin their path.
  • He’s the one who named it the Big Fuckoff Scythe.
  • It’s kinda part of the tradition for each new wielder to name the blade. His mother before him named it Closure, and her mother before her named it Willbreaker, and her father before her named it the Grieving Blade. You get the picture.
  • Hugo’s mom was less than thrilled when he actually stuck with the name Big Fuckoff Scythe.

Older Hugo Stuff – Age 43

  • He’s still a prick but at least he stopped talking.
  • Takes his job more seriously, but also recognizes now that he can have a life beyond hunting. Like… dude… you can enjoy things that aren’t chasing down horrible monsters… it’s okay…
  • Has completely severed ties with the rest of his family by this point.
  • He basically took the last 25 or so odd years undoing the trauma his parents inflicted on him. He still doesn’t know why everyone went so cold, but at this point in time he isn’t invested in finding out anymore. The past is in the past, and while he recognizes that it’s important to understand where he came from, he isn’t going to center his entire existence around his heritage either.
  • He’s just a schmuck with a scythe and enough force of will to control his lycanthropy.
  • He kinda has this idea for if he ever met anyone else interested in taking up the Hunt. He’s more than willing to pass on what he knows to other people who believe in the cause. He’s already passed a little bit on to Alistair. He'll be happy to teach his skills to anyone else who might be interested.
  • Refuses to hunt people. He's not a goddamn bounty hunter.

Trivia

  • He seems to have some connection to the Lord of Rottwin Manor.

  • One of these days he's gonna just start crying and hoo boy will that be a Lot.
  • He is the only true remaining member of the Korzha clan. Everyone else has either died or abandoned their posts.

Relationships

Citadel [ Fellow Hunter ]

Hugo and Citadel have worked together several times in the past. Citadel has taken an 'academic interest' in him, particularly his bloodline  lycanthropy. He uses the guise of the hunt to get close enough to Hugo  to study him. Hugo honestly barely tolerates Citadel. They're. Friends? Maybe? On a good day?

Alistair [ Acquaintances ]

Hugo has worked with Alistair once or twice in the past, either when his jobs became more mundane or Alistair’s needed backup. The two are  neutral towards each other; Hugo thinks that Alistair is decent at his job, and Alistair quite enjoys how dependable Hugo is. However, the two don’t actively seek each other out, outside of work. Well, Hugo doesn't actively seek out Alistair. Vice versa is a slightly different ordeal. Alistair likes to show up and hang around with him whenever he's in town, whether he likes it or not. Hugo doesn't seem to care.

Parliament [ Fellow Hunter ]

Parliament and Hugo are on decent terms. Parliament isn't overly fond of Hugo's tendency to disappear for months at a time, but she recognizes that he gets shit done. Hugo appreciates Parliament's sense of responsibility, and holds a great respect for her. He wants to be friends, but it's hard for him to make friends. And she's busy a lot of the time.

Michaelis Abbott [ Dislike Each Other ]

These two hate each other. Michaelis thinks that Hugo always looks hungry to him, and Hugo knows this, and it makes him deeply uncomfortable. They're not actively hostile to each other, but they will actively avoid being in the same room alone together. Literally the only reason these two interact with each other is because of their common link in Alistair. Had it not been for him, these two would never speak.

Chasm Mel'tar [ Hired to Kill, Failed ]

Chasm is a thorn in Hugo's side, and to date the only quarry that has eluded him. Chasm is the reason why Hugo no longer takes on contracts for humanoids. Chasm goes out of his way to actively antagonize Hugo whenever the two are in the same area. One of these days, Hugo's gonna snap.

Casran Samaar [ Acquaintances ]

Of all of the hunters of Odonrith, Hugo is the one that Casran interacts with the most. Hugo passes along any relevant news about the goings on of Grayhold, and in return, Casran acts as another line of defense against whatever threats might arise that are a little higher than anyone else’s paygrade. Thankfully, his services are rarely needed. Hugo likes the old man. They share a kinship in their inability to leave well enough alone.

Ziyaad Malemir [ Friends? ]

They're. Friends. Sure, yeah. They're friends. The two have crossed paths a fair few times. Hugo appreciates Ziyaad's devotion to his work, and having him on hand has proven immensely helpful in the past. It's more of a hands-off sort of friendship; the both of them travel around too much to see each other often, but they enjoy each other's company when they have time to breathe.
