Oda

adult (b. 24.5.)

she/her

wolf

Kaarnekynnet

healer

A world without humans. Magic is real, the old gods are still alive, and all kinds of nature spirits live beside the wolves.
Three wolfpacks live in a beautiful land called Mantu.

The staid and rigid Hallahampaat rule the North on a fell of Hallatunturi, the warm and diligent Kaarnekynnet dwell in the eastern forest of Kaarnekorpi, the wild new-comers Ryövärit have settled in the southwest, and in the south, in a deep dark forest of Sysiaarnio, there are dark creatures, like maahiset, who are always hungry and love to kidnap careless wolf pups to eat and leave only their own changeling offspring behind.

Every wolf has their own job in a pack, be it a hunter, a craftswolf, a warrior, a healer, or a shaman.

OdA

  • Oda is a depressed and traumatized healer who tries her hardest to make everyone hate her as much as she hates herself. She hides behind a mask made of a crooked smile and a careless additude - after all what is the world but just a cruel joke.

Appearance

  • Oda is a medium size, soft, a bit chubby, a bit stocky. Her fur is grey-is brown with light and black markings, her nose and paw pads are black, and her nails are light.
  • Her eyes are yellow and tired. She often wears a sarcastic or self-deprecating crooked smile, all of her expressions are a bit stiffer on the scarred side of the face.
  • She has huge burn scars, mostly on the right side of the body and head. Both of her ears have been burned - the right one is entirely gone, and only half of the other one is still there.
  • Her other visible scars include two long scars crossing each other on her left shoulder, a smaller one on her lip, a nick on her remaining half-ear, and a collection of old scars on her right hind leg, that still often ache and hurt, especially on cold days. Only half of the fluffy tail remains.

Fun facts

  • Oda was originally created 2012. She was a german shepherd and was supposed to go to Andriaana. In 2014 she got a complete makeover and found a new life in Hukanpolku as she is now. I tried to change her name along with her design and past, but Oda had already stuck, so nothing else seemed to fit. She was an active rp character from 2014 to 2017, and in 2018 she briefly found her way to Suensaaga rpg.
  • I actually really liked her design before I ruined it with those burn scars. But then again, the opportunities for angst that came with those huge scars were more compelling than keeping her nice colouring intact lol.
  • Oda is bi.
  • Her eyesight is a slightly worse in her right eye.

Relationships

JUURI PUNATAMMI † ??¿?

Oda has the utmost respect for Juuri and was completely smitten with her. For the longest time she did her best to avoid Juuri in any way she could, and when she finally was cautiously ready to confront her feelings towards her, she found out that Juuri had died.

MUSTAHAIKARA "MUSTI" mother figure

Oda's stern healing teacher and the only adult to actually care about her when she was a teenager. Oda has always had a hard time of showing that she cares about anyone and Musti is not an exception, even after reuniting with her after years of thinking she was dead.

IKILUU something of a friend

Ikiluu, a brash border guard, that could've been Oda's friend if Oda wasn't so damn incapable of making friends.
ikiluu © saturnus

RYMY PUNATAMMI juuri's brother

Juuri's irritable brother who told Oda the news about Juuri's passing.

VARPUNEN rymy's fiancée

Oda has no real opinion on Varpunen, but Juuri didn't like her, and Oda will gladly take her side.

MOTHER AND FATHER † parents

Oda's parents were prioritizing their jobs way too much to pay nearly enough attention to their big litter of puppies. Oda's relationship to them was very strained and distant.
They went missing and probably died in the Kaarnekorpi fire.

SIBLINGS † brothers and sisters

Oskaar, Dona, Arik, Aida, Otto and Eevi - three brothers and three sisters. Their childhood was very competetive, and Oda was never very close to any of them.
She saw Otto and her family die in Kokko's attack on Kaarnekoto. The rest of them were never found, but also probably died in the Kaarenkorpi fire.

NITO would-be-fiancé

Nito and Oda got into the worst fight of her life, in which she lost her tail and injured her leg so badly it's still bothering her years later. Then her parents tried to marry her off to him. Oda told all of them to fuck off and never talked to any of them again.

NORKKO craftswolf

A fleeting crush, that never amounted to anything, because they never met again.

Story

Oda and her six siblings were born to busy parents, who didn't really have the time or will to pay all their children individual attention. So from very young age Oda learned to be boisterous and loud, and how she should to always try her best to draw all the attention to herself. Her childhood was constant competition with her siblings, and even though she cared for her family, their relationship was never grew that close.
As a young teenager Oda tried to get the attention she so badly wanted by distancing herself even more. Rebellion against her parents was actually the most important reason for her to become a healer, since her parents would've hoped their children would've became warriors or shamans. Oda had so many siblings, though, that there ended up being both of those too, and her rebellion went completely unnoticed.

Eventually Oda started taking out her frustration and bad feelings by picking fights with almost everyone she met, and pretty much asking to get beaten up. Her parents, still busy with their jobs, didn't even notice, that more often than not she was bleeding all over the place and had probably eaten one too many mushrooms, too. Oda's siblings had their own worries and traumas to be focusing on, so it's not like she would've gotten help from there either.
Her stern healing teacher was the only adult who actually seemed to somewhat care about her fate, and Oda really would've latched on to her, if not for the fact that she had already figured that pushing people away would always be less painful than admitting you cared.

Fighting and general disregard of her own safety were quickly becoming a bad habit that Oda had a hard time breaking - even after multiple close calls. Her healing skills improved quickly, just from fixing up her own injuries, and the knowledge of how to bind wounds and where to find the best pain relieving plants would probably never leave her skull.
One brawl ended so badly, that Oda lost half of her tail and got a terrific collection of wounds on her right hind leg - the scars of which are still bothering her to this day. That was the end of the worst deliberate fight picking, because it took a really long time for those wounds to heal and Oda had to practically learn to walk again, with one bad leg and without a tail to give balance.

With her rowdy behaviour, Oda had never gotten the desperately needed attention from her parents, but as soon as they found her a proper fiancé, a fine young warrior called Nito, they were suddenly very interested in their daughter's life. All of a sudden Oda would've had to become a sweet little house wife to this stupid male (not only stupid, but actually the one that she had gotten into that worst fight of her life - the one who ripped off her tail), and have his stupid puppies, all just to bring joy and pride to her neglectful parents. It wasn't that surprising that Oda was not happy about the idea.

She refused to hear any of her parents thoughts on the subject, because they had no right to suddenly pretend that they cared, only to control her life. It was way, way, wayy, too late for that. A fight - only a verbal one this time - ensued and hurtful words were exchanged on both sides. In the end Oda finally cut off all her ties with her family, told the would-be-fiancé to just fuck off, and never spoke to any of them again.

One winter weird things were happening in Mantu. The gates of Tuonela, the underworld, were leaking and letting kalmas, zombie-like ghosts of the dead to make their way to the upper world to wreak all sorts of havoc. Oda and a pack-mate called Norkko (© majelia) happened to stumble upon a gruesome scene where an already dead bear was viciously attacking a group of wolves. Norkko and the other wolves tried to kill the bear, while Oda desperately tried to save one of its victims that had been strug by the kalma's claws. But it was already too late, and for the first time ever Oda lost a patient.
Shaken and trying to hide it, she walked back home with Norkko, and maybe in some other universe their shared experience would've brought them together and they might've gotten together and even been happy together. But because they were who they were, they never even saw each other again.

Life went on, and maybe there were some fine opportunities to make friends, but Oda let them all slip through her paws.
Then, one summer night, when most of the pack had gathered to enjoy a bonfire and to tell stories to each other, Juuri Punatammi, who Oda already thought was sort of an interesting person, went on an angry feminist rant lecturing a warrior, who had been a bit too careless with her gendered insults. Oda was instantly smitten.

Too bad, that right about then, Kokko, a giant godly fire eagle, decided to remind the wolves that their insolence had a cost and set the whole freaking forest on fire.

Stealing Kokko's fiery feathers had always been considered a heroic act, and even Oda had considered trying to snatch one - not for any heroics, but because Kokko's feathers were a great heat source and freezing weather always made her injured leg ache. But she had never actually gotten around to it before Kokko had left Mantu altogether, taking its precious feathers with it.
Oda had visited its abandoned nest in hopes of finding some feather or another left behind. There were none, but she did find a burning hot fire stone, and kept that.

But apparently Kokko had never left for good, and it was now back with red-hot revenge, not at all appreciating the puny wolves plucking its feathers, disturbing its nest and stealing its things.
And Kokko's vengeance was terrible to behold. The forest was ablaze all around the wolves, many were killed immediately, and the rest were fleeing in blind terror. Oda saw her sister and her sister's puppies she didn't even know existed, get eaten by the flames. There was pain and panic and at some point Oda was probably on fire herself. Being the most selfless selfish person ever, she tried to save at least someone, but everything was just a blur of red, orange and pain.

Oda found herself from a river, trying to cool down her giant burning injuries, when she heard nearby howling. Not even realizing that she herself was very close to death, Oda crawled towards the sound, determined to help whoever was calling.
From the source of the howl she found Juuri and Ikiluu, an acquaintance Oda had met a couple of times aka probably the closest thing she had to a friend. Out of all the wolves Oda could've found those were definitely the two she was the most glad to see alive.

Juuri, who was in relatively good shape, sacrificed parts of her leather armor to the gods and desperately pleaded them for help.
And lo and behold, Mielikki, the goddess of the forest herself appeared in front of the three wolves in distress. At this point, Oda was so out of it with pain and stress and fever, that she was hysterical and didn't even think that what was happening was real.
Mielikki passed a message to Juuri, telling her how to fix this by working together and praying, healed Oda and Ikiluu (or at least saved their lives), and left.

The autumn went on and Oda was riddled with guilt and anguish. She was more in need of support and company than ever, so naturally she completely isolated herself and avoided everyone. She knew she should be helping - in times like this the pack needed its healers more than ever - but she just couldn't. That made her feel even more guilty and that in turn made facing anyone seem even more impossible.
Also, half of her face was gone. Not a thing she wanted to parade around, either.

Oda was avoiding everyone, but especially she was avoiding Juuri Punatammi - for multiple reasons, for example: never thanking her for saving her life, and also not wanting to get in the way of them building a new, glorious pack out of the literal ashes of the old one. But especially since Oda had no idea how to deal with her feelings, and avoiding the one person she most urgently wanted to be with, seemed like a totally logical solution.
So, when she finally did meet Juuri again, things didn't go all that well. Oda tried to take out all of her problems on Juuri, and tried to just make her angry or react in any negative way. She tried being flippant of the whole tragedy, and she tried blaming Juuri for her scarring and even for saving her life. But instead of making Juuri hate her, she was just hurting her, and that in turn hurt Oda and everything was a giant mess.

But they did manage to make the air a teeny tiny bit clearer, and Oda returned with Juuri to the rest of the pack. Her self-imposed exile was over - at least in theory.

Oda pretended that everything was fine and straightened up as a healer, helping everyone that was still alive and accepted her help. She was still annoying, arrogant and careless, or at least acted like it which is a same thing. She still kept avoiding Juuri, but did it more subtly this time - pretended not to notice her or acted so busy that she didn't have time to chat.

She did join a searching team going back to their old burned koto, home, to find some items that were not destroyed by the fire, and that would be good sacrificial gifts for the gods - just because that was Juuri's idea, and Oda wanted, somewhere deep down, to prove to her that she was not actually completely useless.

But still, as soon as they were at the koto, and were pairing up to start the search, Oda took great care to definitely not be paired up with Juuri. And it was probably good too, because with an almost stranger it was way easier to keep up her nonchalant act, even in a situation as emotionally draining as digging trough ash and dead bodies to find some artifacts that might've belonged to deceased loved ones.

Oda found a simple wooden necklace that once belonged to her mother. The owner was nowhere to be found, but seeing the half burned wooden pendant finally made Oda realize, that yes, her whole family was probably dead. She didn't know what to think about that.

That did make her think about family and how different her life might've been if she had married Nito, or whoever, like her parents would've wanted. Maybe that had been their way of showing they cared, and Oda just had spat it in their faces. Maybe she could've been happy, with a loving husband and a swarm of puppies.
But the reality was that it wouldn't be long until she'd be an old, bitter and lonely spinster with nothing but her mean personality and horrible scars. The chances of her marrying without an arrangement were pretty damn slim and that train had passed years ago. And even if there were one person, she might've wanted to get married to.... Well, that was just ridiculously impossible.

Speaking of... Those were the thoughts that Juuri Punatammi found her in. She was having family trouble of her own; her brother was going to wed the insufferable girl that Juuri had lectured about those feminist ideals ages ago.
Juuri was venting about all that to Oda, and in a momentarily gust of courage Oda suggested that she could make the brother hate her just like Juuri hated his fiancée - and then kissed Juuri's cheek. And promptly ran away without waiting what her reaction or answer might've been, mortified by her daring, and pretty sure she could never look Juuri in the eyes again.

And she never did. Juuri was one of the wolves that were arranging a big group sacrifice to the gods, and she stood there in front of everybody, Oda did't even dare to look at her.
At least he sacrifice went more than well. The forest gods Mielikki, Tapio and their daughters appeared to the wolves and healed the forest that had been dead and burnt for nearly a year now. Even though this was the second time Oda met gods, she still had trouble believing that they actually, really, did care about affairs of mere mortals and actually listened to their prayers.

And after that everything should be fine: the forest was alive again and prey would eventually return. Everything should just be hunky-dory.

But it wasn't. Oda was still distraught, wanting answers for questions she didn't even know how to put into words, wanting finally to talk about the first time Mielikki had appeared to someone, who was there and understood. But Ikiluu was nowhere to be found, and Juuri was.... complicated. Oda did also want to finally thank Juuri for saving her life, properly this time. Not in a "thanks for not letting me die, even though that was clearly what i would have deserved and wanted" -type of way, but genuinely. But the kiss and the fleeing afterwards were still enough to make her absolutely mortified and terrified of Juuri's reaction.
So instead of trying to find either of them, Oda just... was. She didn't try to avoid them anymore, but couldn't seem to just run into them either.

Turned out Oda had not been able to come across Juuri, because Juuri had died.

Juuri's brother Rymy delivered the news, reluctantly and probably hating Oda - and Oda's world shattered. She was lost, alone and hurting so bad that it was almost unbearable. She should've noticed that Juuri was sick! What kind of a healer was she! Juuri had been slowly dying, but still gave her all to the pack, and it felt entirely Oda's fault. She could never make it better. It was too late and Juuri was gone, gone, gone.

Already numb with grief, Oda ran into her old teacher, Musti, who she'd thought had died years and years ago. And honestly, meeting her couldn't have come at a better time. Oda completely broke down, crying probably for first time since childhood, and confessed that she was so tired, of life, of herself and of everything. Musti was a comforting presence and stayed with Oda for the night.
Too bad, that in the morning Oda was feeling more like herself, and had enough energy to put up her usual walls and start the uncaring, carefree act again. Musti and Oda got into a fight over how Oda was just throwing her life away and doing nothing productive with her skills. Oda decided to leave before Musti could do it first. It hurts less, if you're the one leaving, right?

Inevitably things that Oda had been packing inside of herself since birth and especially in the last year, had to boil over. The pack was voting for a new leader and new heads for every occupation, and almost the whole pack had gathered to listen to the speeches of the candidates.
Oda gave a speech too. For once in her life, she was bitingly honest about how much she actually cared about every single member of the pack, even though she had done nothing but trying to prove otherwise. She told about her guilt following Kokko's attack, and about her absence in the months after that. She asked why she was the one that Mielikki saved, when there would've been others who would have deserved it so much more.
And then she told she's going to be a candidate to be the new head healer, because that's the least she can do for Juuri Punatammi, who saved her life and gave her all to the pack.

And for some bizarre reason she actually got elected. Even though she had promised that she'd definitely still be the exactly same asshole and the pack would probably come to hate her maybe even more than before, she still got the majority votes. Perhaps her genuine speech/vent had been enough to move some people, or maybe they knew that she in fact, despite her assholiness, she was actually a very skilled healer and wouldn't actually be that bad of a choice, skill-wise.

And to be honest, she wasn't doing the worst job in the world.

She then was supposed to become Musti's grand-grand-grand kid's teacher, but alas....

in suensaaga rpg

When old Musti then died, Oda left. She already had the habit of running when things got too hard, and now she just ran farther than ever. For a while she travelled with a group of wolves with similar reasons for being on the move - no one asked and no one told what they were running from or what they were looking for.

She ended up in a place where two wolf packs were at a vicious war. Having separated from her traveling companions, she was alone and hungry, so she stayed with one of the packs for an exchange of working as their healer.
Only, as the winter turned to spring, the war took an unfortunate turn, and almost everyone of the pack Oda was staying with, was slaughtered. The war was lost.

Oda had no reason not to swear endless loyalty for the winning leader to save her life, so she was spared and made to an errand boy and an entertainer - a slave, in a word.

For a while it was amusing and fed her self-destructive streak to whore out herself, sing pretty songs to wolves who had the right to treat her like dirt, and hide that she had ever been anything more than what she currently was.
It wasn't that bad, even. She had food and a place to sleep, and as long as she kept busy she was still free to roam wherever she wanted. The threat of the cold wilderness and hungry life alone was enough to keep most of the slaves from just taking off.

Well, Oda didn't have much regard for her life or safety, so when she got bored of playing along, homesickness got too strong to ignore when staying still, and when the past seemed to come knocking in the form of meeting Juuri's look-alike, she decided to take her chances and just left again.
