"You know, you don't have to use the spicy sauce."
Levyn writes that down, but continues eating the cricket, sobbing openly.

Levyn originates from a tabletop RP with some friends. She's the party's expert on magic, lacking in common sense or knowledge of pretty much everything else due to her... sheltered upbringing. (She was born & raised in a magical city inside a pocket dimension; think Fallout's vaults but with wizards instead of technology)

(Her first name is pronounced LEH-vinn; similar to 'leaven' or 'heaven')

Personality

Levyn is pretty naive, having been raised in an environment with little in the way of natural dangers. Where she's from, curiosity is considered one of the highest virtues there is (early on in their history, rapid and reckless arcane research was the only way they were able to survive); so she's always eager to learn more about the material world.

She collects books about things found in nature, and keeps a journal/scrapbook of things she sees and learns about, but leaves out things others would consider important details (such as what she and her companions need to be doing on their quests). As a conjuration mage-in-training, especially, knowledge of all these new things is helpful to expand her "color palette" for things to conjure.

She's kind of quiet and shy most of the time, but she's easily swept up in things and can become sort of fired up about them; trying to impress an illusory audience of people, or loudly supporting a friend's argument that the mayor was a soul vampire (despite knowing it's probably false).

Many generations ago, there was a beautiful city; the capitol of an empire, its people renowned across the continent for their magical power. A prophecy was passed down from a great oracle, foretelling of a magical catastrophe that would mean the destruction of all their lands, the mere after-effects of which would render them uninhabitable for centuries. Driven to desperation, all the most learned and powerful wizards in the empire came together to cast a spell that would protect the capitol city from this disaster. In their zeal to insulate from all possible threats, they cleaved the city and the land it stood on from the material plane itself...

Levyn hails from an extradimensional city-plane of mages and wizards. She grew up on a diet chiefly consisting of conjured nutrient blocks, fruit from the trees that line the streets, grain from the wispy grasses her ancestors domesticated, and on rare occasions, the meat or eggs of the giant riding birds her people raised as livestock.

Of all the schools of magic studied there, Conjuration was the most obviously practical one. Being able to produce food and building materials ex nihilo was an ability that was always in high demand, in a city surrounded by void and sky on all sides. (Before her fateful accident, Levyn herself was majoring in Conjuration magic, in the hopes of being one of the many extending the lifespan and reach of her home.)

New knowledge and experiences were also prized commodities. Every new piece of information was something that might be useful in helping them survive, or even thrive, despite the adversities they faced. Since the earliest recorded history, the city's inhabitants had been pursuing arcane knowledge above all regard for their own safety; it is said that the only thing that kept them from starving early on was the invention of a new spell.

Young Levyn took this idea to heart; perpetually curious, pushing against what was considered safe or possible. Early in her education, one of these experiments had a permanent side effect; a pair of glowing antennae on her head. She could have sought the aid of more experienced mages in removing them afterwards... but she kept them, partly because she thought they looked cute, but also because she saw them as a symbol of her dedication to arcane research. (As she's grown used to them, she's found them helpful for sensing magic around her)

This mindset eventually culminated in a magical accident far more life-changing than antennae. While experimenting with translocation spells, Levyn accidentally discovered a method of exiting the plane she'd lived all her life in -- finding herself dumped unceremoniously into the material world. With no idea how to get home, and no conception of just how huge and varied this new world would be, Levyn wandered through the wilderness until she reached a small village.

It didn't take long for her to figure out not only did no one know how she could get home, none of them had even heard of her home, and very few had any magical training to speak of. Not to mention the looks the townsfolk shared when she tried to explain what her home was like.

Since those rocky early days, Levyn has found a comfortable niche exploring the material world with a few others, as a party of adventurers. She's learned to stop eating random plants she finds, and to stop trying to talk to strangers about where she's from. Even still, she's always keeping her eyes and ears open for possible leads on returning to her home plane.

Back home, it was strangely almost universally accepted that there was no "world outside the city", and that leaving was impossible. Levyn feels certain that everyone will be excited to hear about her discoveries, if she could only get there to share it with them..!

Trivia

  • Levyn was originally conceived of as having fallen from a city in the sky, but the potential of this other concept seemed way too interesting not to use it.
  • Levyn first learned what spiders were when a giant spider tried to wrap her in its web, and she quickly decided she was scared of them. The spider decided it didn't like the magic strobe lights she shot at it and quickly decided to let her go.
  • Conjuration mages typically stick to the most basic objects they can; simple raw materials like stone or food blocks are hard to mess up, and when you "mess up" conjuring something like a roast bird, the results can be pretty unpleasant! Some ideas include: 'No bones inside - but thin layer of bone wrapped around the entire thing like an exoskeleton', 'All the "grain" of the meat is perfectly straight and aligned along its axis', etc

Friend & Teammate

Out of her fellow adventurers, Harrie is the one Levyn gets along best with. They watch eachothers' backs when the party gets into weird situations. Levyn was inspired to order a plate of crickets at an inn after a conversation relating to Harrie's name.

Robin Redd

Friend & Teammate

During the party's first big ordeal, Levyn received a bow of magical accuracy, and Robin, a whip that only works if the wielder says a one-liner first. Robin's trusty bow snapped in half during a climactic battle, and afterwards, Levyn proposed they trade their magic items with eachother.

Sapphira Shadowstare Draconia

Teammate

While Levyn and Sapphira might not always see eye-to-eye on how the party should go about their business, Levyn's glad they're on the same side.

Dr. Dead End MacNeil

Teammate

The team's medic, Dr. MacNeil has been there to heal every member of the party at one point or another. Levyn's never seen magic or science of the sort he specializes in, and she's not in a hurry to learn more about the necromantic corruption he inflicts on the party's enemies.

Alouette Pinwheel

Unrequited Crush

One of Levyn's classmates in magic school, but they haven't seen one another since Levyn fell out of their home plane. Most likely assumed Levyn's accident rendered her permanently invisible, or caused her to implode into nothingness, or something along those lines.

Appearance

Height: 5'5"

She has dark hair that seems to sparkle in certain lighting, cut in a girlish short style, and a pair of glowing antennae sprouting from her head. (Similar look to the ones Chinchou have)

She wears a silver circlet from home - it symbolized the subject and level of her magical education at the time of her disappearance - as well as robes covered in glyphs and magic circle designs.

Her main belongings are her journal, her magic wand; which fires disorientating bursts of light (received from a mole in return for a pretty rock she'd picked up in an enchanted cave), and an oversized pair of hedge trimmers; the first complex object she's ever conjured, produced during a dangerous fight with a soul-stealing plant.
