In order to leave, he must put back together the torn up heart of the world's ruler, the Maestro. But this means stealing those pieces of heart away from the other residents of the dream, dolls who have been using the pieces to feel human.

A girl volunteers to be the "hero who slays the demon" as part of her village's tradition.

It was supposed to be a purely ceremonial thing, no one was expecting her to actually encounter the demon, least of all herself.

That "demon" in question, however, is just a little boy. So she does the completely logical thing, and teaches him how to bake cookies instead.
