aaa thank you! I really recommend mini comics if you haven't tried already btw. it's a great way to test out techniques and mediums w/o pressure

On traditional, I switched mostly because I liked the feel better. I find it easier for me to do more detailed line-work traditionally, and with digital I feel I end up doing a lot of adjusting & undoing. Because I can't do that traditionally (at least in a quick & easy way) I feel I don't get stuck in trying to tweak stuff as often. I usually do pen & ink with digital touch ups

Biggest downside is materials imo. Storage can become a problem & I have to reorganize my supplies & finished works a lot. Plus finding the materials that fits you can get costly. Especially because brands can behave differently from one-another so it can be a matter of trial & error.

Kafluffle

Oh this is a cute idea ~some comic networking

Traditional art is a super unique and a cool format, I wish I had the spoons to do it. My friend has a webcomic painted in gauche, she just started posting again, it's like a Phantom of the Opera thingy with vampires and you can find it here! What they ended up doing is painting, scanning it into the computer and then touching things up digitally. I'm probably completely butchering that process, so I hope they don't find this and fight me.

Now for my bit ~

Tell us something about yourself! - Name's Kafluffle, I'm a senior in college (not for art), and I like gifs and characters that are easy to redraw.
What inspired you to make comics? Have you ever tried making a comic before, or are you still planning? - So for my comic its been an idea I had since I was in 6th grade (10+ years ago) I've had much more recent ideas that I want to peruse, but for closure? Some weird other reason? I feel like I HAVE to finish the first fully fleshed out story I ever made. The reason I chose a comic is because I wrote the whole thing out and felt like it was missing something, I feel like the art of expression the comic format gives you is hard to replicate in text. How long does a page take you? On average in takes me a couple hours to do a page, I purposely picked a style that I could turn out quickly and if I have extra time I tend to add gifs to it. I'm an idiot though and tend to draw them the day of instead of queue them up. I started with a queue in the beginning and just uh never refilled it. I also am an idiot who draws everything on the same layer, so it takes longer to fix an issue? Than it does to make an issue.
Share some of your experiences and tips, ask other people about theirs, start a conversation! - The reason I took so long to start mine was because I was afraid my art wasn't good enough, but ya know what? I think its super cool to be able to see an artist's evolution in their works and I lost a lot of old art I liked because I was embarrassed about it, so I have 2 things to say about that. 1. If you wait until your art is perfect you are never going to start and 2. Cringe is dead! Make the comic for yourself as self indulgent or whatever you want it's for you first and foremost and if other people like it that's cool too!

Azterah

Tell us something about yourself!

Hello! I actually know some of these webtoon creators!! ticklerust I see you!! So I have a personal comic currently in development it is called Global Guardian. i have a short 3 episode preview on webtoons as it doesn't launch until next summer, but I do host a lot of the information about that comic here on TH including the characters and some world building. I love to draw and hope to make it a full time job as a visual development artist someday as I graduated with a degree in animation and illustration.

What inspired you to make comics? How long does a page take you? Have you ever tried making a comic before, or are you still planning?

I am a thinker and i love developing many different concepts. I've been creating worlds since I could pick up a utensil and write. I didn't get into art itself until my high school years and then professionally pursued it in college. I have lots of scripts on my computer that never made it to comic format but my current personal one I will see to the end. I hope it lasts me a good long time. So I have made a bunch of mini comics but never anything that I could turn into a visual novel except for a small children's book I printed. I have another webtoon collab series called Angels After Dark. Pages will vary on length and detail but can be anywhere from 1 day to 2 weeks. My average is about 3 days if it involves full sketch to backgrounds and rendering. I currently am drawing for a collab series and am planning my '22 comic launch!

Some tips for creators: draw, draw draw, and buffers so helpful for when things come up. I use Clip Studio Paint which is a lifesaver and I am excited to dig more into that program. I always write sidestories as it keeps my creativity flowing even if it is non-canon for the comic. I am always looking for fellow creators, so send me your comics I'd love to read them!!! For backgrounds, 3D model assets are your best friend!!! I used to draw all by hand until I discovered this and it shaved hours off my background creations.

RayEnigma

I'm glad more people like the idea, welcome everyone! Apologies for slow work and responses, but high school is... tough :'))

Kafluffle I remember writing my stories down in the past, and I think I can relate that I felt that the writing wasn't enough. Agony, unimaginable pain.
Also, a comic with GIF images? I don't see those a lot, but there's always something special about them, they feel so unique.
Also I totally second your tips! If you feel like making a comic, do it! The most important thing about it is to enjoy it, after all.

Azterah fellow world creator I see! I remember creating my own silly universe since I was in primary school :'D those things are always fun.
And '22 comic air? Dayum, that's a lot of time if you think about it... but hey, you have a heckload of time to work on this!

Your comics have been added to the library!

Kafluffle

RayEnigma Thanks! No problem on speed, webcomics don't tend to be a full time job after all.

Yeah not all the pages have gifs and some are more intricate than others, but it gives a little bit of a surprise pop that's fun. My cast page is animated with a rollover change too, granted I have to finish all the cast stuff it's in an overhaul. One thing I do like about gifs though is that the platform for a webcomic is digital so it gives you the ability to have interactions like that which you can't do on a printed book. On the other hand, it makes it harder if you ever choose to print your comic.

Phosphini

Hi! I'm Phini!
I majored in Ceramics in college, mostly because my school didn't offer sequential art, but I did get to do some comic projects for my drawing class!
I've got one completed mini-comic (16 pages), and have another project (30 pages) totally thumbnailed- but I've hit a bit of a snag- I need a sensitivity reader and I'm having trouble finding someone who both reads for the demographics I need, and will work with comics. If anyone knows of a good place to try and find someone, please let me know!

I may redo my mini-comic some day... I originally conceived of it being a lesbian couple in the story, but chickened out once I pitched it as a school project that would be at my art show for all my homophobic family to see.

Here's my mini-comic info!

RayEnigma

Phosphini welcome! Dang, you and other people here make mini comics look so fun, I should try them someday 👀

It's a huge shame that you couldn't put the lesbian couple in your comic because of your homophobic family :(( but dayum I wish I could make a comic as a school project :'DD that sounds fun!

I will put your comic in the library as soon as I'm back home!

HyacinthBlue

I'm starting a series of mini comics, does anyone have any tips?

HyacinthBlue

Gingasnap

Thank you!

Kafluffle

Robinsnow While thumbnails are important I suggest writing out the whole plot before you doodle thumbnail images, even if the plot is just bullet pointed. That way you can figure out what you need to draw on each page in order to meet the page count you consider a 'mini comic' instead of running into a problem of either cramping / rushing your pages or fluffing it too much to meet a quota. The page number itself doesn't matter as much if its just a webcomic, but certain sizes of pages are more cost efficient if chosen to run a print of them so that should be kept in mind too. Of course, in webcomic format people tend to not get interested if the page count is too low / not enough substance and if you are making it a series it would be more attractive to have every mini comic the same amount of pages instead of having let's say one 7 pages and another 30, edit the plot to make them all 15.

HyacinthBlue

Kafluffle thank you! I'd actually already written out a script for it, but thanks for the other tips!
