Simply put, what do you consider the main influences in your art and/or writing style?

Are they other Internet artists? Classical painters? Mangakas? YA literature? Feel free to tell in just as much detail as you wish, but remember to put images under spoilers if you're posting particularly large images! This is also a totally welcome thread for both writers and artists, so don't feel intimated!!

Darkest Dungeon and The Last Halloween comic is what made me try out the heavy black linearts where I'm at now and the Akira manga fueled my obsession with details and how I draw some backgrounds, I just still gotta get better at actually drawing that

Kasedori I really just wanted to say I totally get you with the pixel art!! I have always been a fan of the more "minimalist" way of doing it as opposed to the very realistic and/or very heavily shaded pieces! I still love the look but for my own art I have always been super influenced by this more "modern" aesthetic

Honestly i feel like Megaman Battle Network is my main inspiration. I just love the smooth style, as well as the recogniseable designs. It's just mMMMMMMM TASTY

I also might have some inspiration from Pokémon? I drew plenty of them back in the day.

But honestly i feel my art doesn't really show it. Tbh i just take a bit of everything XD

Akatsuki Gomoku and Hiro Kanzaki are probably the artists that have most influenced my style.

Harada was also huge inspiration to me. Their work was pretty much what got me back into making art, even if my style evolved in kind of a different direction.

A lack of time to write, really good imagery, and the intricacies of large and comprehensive world building nudged me towards where I am today.
so now i lean on brevity, improving descriptions, and explaining a lot of stuff

Scottie

Oh boy!

My art style itself lends itself towards dynamics and expressions, particularly cartoon.  I watched a lot of Lion King and Spirit growing up, and I do see some callbacks to those movies' art styles in my own.  I also really like most animated animal movies/cartoons. I've been told my style also somewhat looks like My Little Pony's, but I don't watch the show and I don't see the connections.

My dragon style in particular was influenced by some users on dA that I heavily followed as a pre-teen and early teen.  I forget all the usernames, but one of them was something like xXGunderXx.  I know that most of the styles I consumed were at least partially-influenced by Spyro, so my early dragon art was like that.  Over time, I diverged, but I kept the facial expressiveness.

The content of my art is influenced partially by my upbringing.  I've always had Scottish terriers growing up and my whole family loves them, so I often drew Scotties in the handmade gifts I gave them. I perfected my Scottie style over time, blending realism with cartoon.  My parents are also Trekkies, so I watched a lot of Star Trek growing up.  That inspired me to have alien creatures like the Anhrefns, and eventually place my book series (Dragaea) on an alien planet and turn the dragons into aliens.  In fact, Anhrefn S is basically "What would happen to a Starfleet Academy dropout?"

Most of my characters are mythological or superhuman.  This is because I read a ton of fantasy growing up.  I wasn't fond of nonfiction when I was younger (I love it now), and I only read it for school or because mom said I needed to.  My preferred reads were along the lines of Eragon, Percy Jackson and co, Fablehaven, The Wingfeather Saga, and Heart's Blood.  Which inspired many of my characters.

wow this thread has reminded me of so many artists that most definitely influenced my artwork now that i think back. I don't remember most of their usernames, i havent seen their artwork in YEARS. I tried to see if i could find a couple by visiting my old tumblr account. J-witless, penguinfrontier, anushbanush, kelogsloops, and kanapy are just a few, but probably some of the ones that influenced me the most? I can definitely see traces of them in my artwork now. I was also influenced by fellow friends i suppose, and anime, cartoons, and music videos!

i kind of take a little bit of everything into my style (although i'm trying to get less anime)

my art nowadays (and as a kid, but when i was younger it was more dc) is mostly inspired by the x men comics/marvel in general, but especially the art and colours in more recent issues (by recent like 2011-now lol) and a lot of instagram artists like happyhumbaug. i think some of the marvel cartoons also influenced me a bit, like wolverine and the xmen and xmen evolution, but not as much. of course, i also watched anime and read manga and i used to draw anime, which i am kind of stuck with some habits from, like the eyes/head tend to be bigger and a lot of the aesthetics still appeal to me. the biggest influences manga wise are probably loveless, tegami bachi/letter bee, and anything that clamp has made (mostly rayearth, but wish too ngl)...

i think i have a bit of inspiration for drawing so many winged characters from just being raised with birds (and loving them now too)

and looking at naked people helps too ;))) i love drawing from reference and doing studies so i think that the nude art on sketchdaily definitely has started to influence me lol

I'm not a writer, but I do enjoy writing dialogue and situations for my characters and I'd say homestuck plays a huge part in how I write people and interactions. There's probably other inspirations as well, but I can't pinpoint specific ones, other than avatar the last airbender though because i've rewatched it recently.

A while back my art was influenced by a lot of anime/anime art styles, I would copy and draw a lot from the pokemon anime, avatar the last airbender, naruto, hetalia and others. I don't really watch anime anymore and nowadays I instead take inspiration from western 2000's cartoons and online artists a lot. I really really love the bold shapes and thick lines used by shows like the original ppg, clone high, MLAATR, grim adventures, invader zim, etc. The online artists I tend to enjoy have very cartoony styles or have a nice mix of anime and western influences! I'm also influenced by a lot of character illustrations for video games, illustrations with a lot of personality. Honestly i can get behind almost any kind of art style as long as its not cutesy, realism or generic anime.

Gonna list some of my favorite artists under a spoiler! only a few because inserting pics is annoying HSJFHJSKF
