Best roleplay experiences

Posted 5 years, 7 days ago (Edited 5 years, 7 days ago) by Cliodna

So once upon a time there was a thread called ITT We discuss our worst RP Experiences. It was a good thread. I liked reading it a lot. I don't expect this one to become too popular but I don't think anyone's ever made one so here goes.

Scored a D20 at a perfect time to do that Thing that made you look wicked cool? Satisfying climax to a long-running subplot? Satisfying climax to a long-running romance plot? :P Discovered the murderer 10 minutes into the mystery? I won't comment much but I'd love to hear.

RP with someone I'll ask permission if I can mention.

Alright, so me and her, our first rp didn't really pick up, but our second?

timeandtimor Nothing wrong with Gaia RP's, this one sounds pretty great. :) I can definitely relate to finding a group of cool people and the joy of having a stable enough group to keep the same character. Best feeling ever.

EternallyScreaming Any particular bits that stand out? :D

Also I should probably write stuff in my own thread. Worst moments are always easy to recall, but "good" bits tend to shift as new series come and go.

Favorite moment from the last 2-3 years was definitely the end of the Wyderian Story-arc with Henry/Julia. I've probably told of it in a few other threads but...

That game master was always really tough and unforgiving, which makes it feel even more of an accomplishment that there were no casualties. Like, imagine a bunch of englishpeople stuck in a medfant world that is technically not real and scheduled to end in a few days. The local demi-god says that she'll send back those who've either become Red Pawn (a local sect she founded) OR faced their fears. Then my character convinced Her that the NPCs who've passed both requirements should be able to "give" their "spare" "pass" to those who'd have otherwise failed. Furthermore he convinced Her to hold the "final judgement" three days early to save the life of an jerkass nephilim he didn't even like. And this whole scene took place on a ship in the middle of a storm, with the aforementioned nephilim being glowy and keeping the ship afloat whilst slowly burning away from the strain of doing so. It looked badass and I keep meaning to draw it. The roleplay series was script-style which means that the whole thing pretty much played out live - a lot of improvising was involved. I just...felt accomplished and clever, plus really-really sad when the ship sank and all the characters got to go home to their "real" bodies after the "medfant subplot" had taken a whole real-life year to solve.

Second-favorite from that series was from the start of the Wyderian arc, when two NPCs working for the aforementioned local demigod deliberately told Henrys' love interest about how the first thing he'd done when left alone in a medfant city was to beeline for the brothels. Then these two jerks literally sat back and watched the circus unfold, providing running commentary the whole time. It was the funniest thing ever, and at the end also surprisingly heartwarming for it pushed my character to say out loud that he loved her.

Runner-ups include every scene where Hehlel and her demon-buddy Itzal took care of each-other, filling holes of each-others particular flavors of ignorance. And that one tabletop scene where Eyaf got a series of really good rolls resulting in her charging into battle on her elk, jumping over a dwarf, throwing a spear mid-leap which impaled an orc, then landing perfectly and retrieving the spear mid-run before the orcs body has had the chance to hit the ground.

As far as my own game mastering goes, this scene was the favorite I've ever done. This one I just really like for the mental image and ambience of it.

Me + 1 player, script style over Skype chat. Their character is a noblegirl, Caelan of Eofarhild, being escorted across the celtic-inspired landscape to meet her groom-to-be. It's not a bad trip - she mostly chats up the bard about how fun it would be to meet a fae and whatnot. Her entourage is forced to sleep outdoors one night. She wakes up due to people looking for one of the soldiers who'd gone down the road to relieve himself and hadn't returned. Caelan demands to be included in the events and decks herself out, even sticking daggers down her boots to feel cool. She forms a search-party with two other people and heads down the road. The weather is overcast - there's nothing but pitch darkness outside the lantern light. Forest gives way to reeds. Reeds give way to water. A lake, with someone humming near-by. There's a woman, submerged to her chest. Combing her very, very long hair. And humming.

Caelan, being a naive noblegirl and everything but genre-savvy, assumes that the woman must be a local peasantgirl or something. She chastises her companions for staring and sends them back, despite their protests, assuming from the womans' replies that she was too bashful to leave the water with men around. Caelan then approached the figure in the water and asked if she had seen a guard passing by.

"I had"

"Oh? Where did he go?"

"He came to me." Okay. Ominous.

 "...is he...ugh...still with you?"

"Come have a look." Very, very ominous.

"But I...I can't swim..."

"There's no need for that skill..."

Caelan is standing there. By the shore, nothing but darkness around her. Water ahead. Woods behind. Finally realizing that there's something really, really wrong, but too paralyzed with fear to move as the woman turns to her. Seconds stretch on.

"You have iron in your boots..." the korrigan finally says in a most disappointed tone of voice and submerges under the lake.

Caelan takes another 10 seconds to start running back for the campsite. Player says they got the chills irl, game master aka me feels that mission was accomplished.

Honestly I've got a bunch of good memories!! Like the one with Banmon where I recall we were supposed to just take it easy with character introduction and even though afaik we had already planned their character would steal mine away the way it happened was so fun and not something we planned it just happened and it was good??

Also in Taros RP group back in 2014 or 2015 a friend and I were having an oc showdown everyone was able to follow real time and we had told them one of the (important) characters would die there but didn't tell which one so everyone was anticipating what would happen next and it was great. I miss RP groups, not gonna lie

These people aren't here (to my knowledge) but I have some very dear-to-my-heart roleplaying experiences!

Written:

-My friend and I did a pseudo-roleplay with our characters and the story ended up basically exploding beyond what we'd planned. We both got so invested and the night we stayed up looking over it and discovered another whole layer to the plot... it was magical.

-Related to that, we were both part of a little group, and I remember one day there was a super dramatic roleplay going on and we were watching, and we ended up having a little mini-rp in IM about characters chatting in a grassy field and it was just so bright and fun. I still remember how disproportionately happy I was. It felt like a song.

-That group used to have big RPGs every year or so. They'd have like ten people and generally work as conclusions to story arcs that the RPG's coordinator wrote. (Who ran it was different every time.) And those RPs are heart-stories, because we all loved them, and we loved the stories, and we loved each other. It was beautiful.

-The only one not from that specific group! One day my friend mentioned something along the lines of "Someday I'd like to run a game where the object is to figure out what's going on." And about a year later he announced that he was going to, and his wife would be co-running. It ended up being absolutely massive, it took five months and had probably 15 or more people. And it took root in my heart, too. I lost track of the number of times those people made me cry.

-Alex-

I only did roleplays on Animal Jam back in the day and written rps which I still do every once in a while. The AJ rps were nothing special.

Warning: all of these involve the Pikmin fandom of all things. We like to the pikmin themselves but they like they are furries in a way? Like, regular pikmin that are smart and act like humans? Pretty much furries by definition.

Basically, the best thing that happened to me is just...anything that happened on a Pikmin fansite. About last year, I met the a bunch of people who became a group tat I call my Squad and we all rped after their school (don't go to school. won't get into why) and we did stuff like day-long rps and ships (hence our name, the Ship Squad). We all still hang out (except for one who we recently decided to kick out for a few reasons which sucked) and we all still talk to each other daily. It's nice and I don't want to lose my Squad.

There were also things that happened relating to rp before this but all of those involve friendships that have either ended or are now just started to mend. Not worth saying except for that those other friends led to me being there to meet my Squad (only one of those people from before the Squad are in the Squad itself).

Oh, and I met my the only boyfriend I had so far because of that site lol. It didn't really work out, relationship-wise, due to him not being able to be online often, but we are still hella good friends and rp whenever we see each other to this day (that's just how a lot of friendships work for me; all we do is rp and chat every once in a while ooc/when we aren't rping. It's nice, usually drama free, and I value them just as much as actual friendships because they are also actual friendships, just with us just rping with each other and not talking as much as other friendships. We do get to know each other well tho). We met over our ocs being similar and then deciding to rp them interacting in pms lol. Then we did a storyline thing and then they became a bunch of one-offs based around his sona and my oc who were in a relationship tho, it happened before ours happened. They are still together and it's a wholesome ship that I love to death lol.

Oh, and during our relationship, I had the idea to play Pokemon games together (mainly PMD:EOT and X/Y. PMD we made our starter each other's partner and named them after each other and XY was a race thing) We never finished PMD because we got stuck but we beat X/Y. I made a balanced team and won lol. It's not rp related but it means a lot to me. And none of this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for cyborg white pikmin and pm rps lol.

The rps are fun and I still enjoy them and talking to him to this day but sadly, I only see him at least...maybe once a month and I haven't seen him this month so far. I'm just gonna hope things are doing okay in his life and he's doing good and if it's bad, that things get better.

Lastly, one that's still going on; me and my friend. We met on DA and is the only person I actively talk to and rp with who I met on there. Obviously, we used Pikmin oc and started out in notes and moved to Discord cuz DA notes are annoying to me since it's hard to know if you get them (I used to get notifs on my phone about them and then the feature...vanished.), we chilled in our pms for a few months before we decided to just make out own private server so we can organize all of the shit we do. We have a bunch of aus, ships, and timelines and it's just fun. (aus as in "what if [blank] happened?"/"what if [blank] happened instead of [blank]?" though, we do have one or two actual aus) I love this to death and I hope nothing happens to my friend lol. Gonna hope this friendship lasts a lifetime.

Albinistic

My character offered people tasty leaves as a peace offering upon arriving to a colony of furries, almost killed and ate someone, talked about how he wanted to lay an egg some day, then was promoted to the village doctor and proceeded to amputate someone's arm.

My guilty pleasure is inserting my "weird" characters into RPs and seeing how far I can go with it.

Ghanima

I do only one on one email roleplaying. Although I am not very active anymore since it is so hard to find good partners. :(

I had one RP that was a lot of fun, because both characters were pretty stupid. I don't even remember the details, just that they were so funny together.

In another RP, there was a very funny scene. There had been some family drama, then our characters had had a fight. My character went home and got very drunk, and my partner's character (the girl) went home, then, after a few hours, decided to go after him after all to talk it over. Of course, my character was too drunk by then to have any kind of proper conversation.

They did make it up the following morning.
