Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 7 months ago (Edited 3 years, 8 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

re: undercharging art

yeah it always bums me out to see ppl undercharging themselves :( i try to tip what i can but man. i know ppl do it bc the market is so competitve but idk....art is a luxury and it rly feels like society has lost sight of that

There’s tons of Instagram artist that are quite toxic to say this thing- “Finger artist don’t exist”, and “Finger artist are impossible”, it just,, mean ?? I’m offended because, one of my relative and I use fingers only on the mobile ever since we were kids. People on discord even said that like “how do you draw with fingers ? Fingers are impossible”, I’m just “excuse me ??” Lol

Many artist that uses bases from Pinterest, and credit with just “Pinterest”. Is just,, wrong to me. Even if the artist that made the base doesn’t left/put their watermark in the bases Art, and they still crediting as just “Pinterest”. Is still wrong. It’s not even this proper nor right thing to credit, it’s not even credit at all. It’s just crediting to the network site.

MFs will let artists get away with anything if they're popular and have a nice artstyle

the “if you need help pricing your art, it’s worth nothing” quote that ive seen SO many artists use on peoples threads. not everyone is good at price gauging their artwork and may just want input, especially with the entire “price too high !!”/“price too low !!” issues. of course, there are other ways to set your prices, but some people just want community input and can grow from there. if it works for them, it works. don’t be that person on the threads, man

^ Ditto to what Jade said. It’s all “hold people accountable” until they have a cute or popular art style. “Bu-But they draw so well 🥺” yeah that doesn’t give them the right to say slurs homie

Re: Artists undercharging.

I understand that sometimes one just wants to sell and feels like they will only do it if they set their prices low enough, either to make up for their lack of skill, or otherwise, but like some people say, just because there is a reason doesn't make it an excuse. Unfortunately, I can't see the trend going away because most of the people who set their prices so low are children or very inexperienced (in marketing) artists. And now with the NFTs is like anyone who really wants to think about making a living off their art should seriously reconsider their life choices... Quoting the great philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: "Art is dead! Art remains dead! And we have killed it! How can we console ourselves, the murderers of all murderers!" because he totally said that.

Now a different pet peeve I have: Artists who showcase their "different art styles" but there's no noticeable difference between the artworks in display other than maybe line weight and subtle coloring changes. I've seen so many artists who do this and their style is more consistent than the animation in Steven Universe.

Self pet peeve. Coloring outside the lines like 1-3 pixels. Nobody even sees this unless they zoom in like 1000% but my gosh it annoys the living hell out of me. I make sure everything is filled nicely but then it's still there. Or one random pixel not filled. Selection tool is also a hit and miss as well as the bucket.

Its really annoying how I lose followers on insta for not posting art every day, but I still lose them if I post. Feels like I can't win.

Its why I didn't even bother posting a "Thanks for the --- followers" because I knew a bunch of petty people would unfollow.

^ Which is honestly why I haven’t used IG as much as I used to in 2017-2018, which sucks. I still use it very often but my posts are much more spaced out. Idk why but maybe the site just isn’t meant for artists anymore. Sucks to see that though when it was so easy to gain attention 3-5 years back.

The previous 2 posts remind me of a really common issue...

People love to expect artists to post art everyday, and honestly it's not a good idea to do that bc chances are artists could potentially get burned out + overworking is really bad for your health. Artists have lives beyond Sosmed, and unfortunately most people ignore it.
