Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

^ On topic with unwanted criticism too. I got someone being mad and called my art boring cus I don't have "variety". Well jeez buddy, what variety are you looking for from me? Care to explain?

*crickets*

I honestly dun care of same face syndrome like if I like drawing a certain face shape then I'll make bajillions of it and I'll never get bored of it cus this is my art, my enjoyment. Not yours. Can't please everyone lol

insomnimac

agree on unwanted criticism. sometimes my self esteem isn’t high enough to handle it lol

also I hate the “oh your character kinda looks like ____”.  it makes my characters seem unoriginal and I spend a lot of time trying to make them seem interesting and unique. ik all characters may have a resemblance to another, but please don’t tell me, because I’ll be super self conscious about it

FRANKENGIMP

probably art style theft/character design theft if its like minor things or very common character traits within the certain community

another thing that is a pet peeve is when people make fun of others for buying copic alternatives. i’m sorry i don’t wanna pay a whopping average of $2.50 per marker. some alternatives like ohuhu and shuttle art are pretty good and you can find them for a lot cheaper.

The above post, but with people who shit on others for getting economic alternatives to Wacom and iPad Pro.

cozylittleartblog

actually might be a mildly hot take with this one but a few posts up reminded me of it, people who insist they ever, ever, ever get critiques. that's just a mild pet peeve, but when they're also the type to get upset that their art isn't getting attention or they say they think their art sucks? that's the Real pet peeve, it's really frustrating to watch them sabotage themselves like that. i can def understand being sensitive especially if you're a newer artist but a good critique will point out not just what you can improve on, but what you're already doing well! critiques are a critical part of improving as an artist and i wish this mindset of "Critiques Bad Always", especially among younger or newer artists who want to improve, would die ; o ; maybe it seems scarier because they've had people blatantly shit on their art before (that's not a critique, that's being shit on) or maybe they think it's going to be so much worse than it actually will be but you will improve so much faster with that guidance. find some art communities where people actually know how to give a constructive critique and you'll quickly find out just how helpful and not-scary they can be <3 helps you build confidence and a thick skin too, and then real troll comments roll right off you like water

but lowkey i was That Exact Kid in middle/high school and my art suffered for it so it's a little bit of a "i want to save you from hindering yourselves the way i did" thing too lmfao

^ Exactly, critiques are to help artists improve. Unfortunately, some people are bad at giving good critiques. I've had too many experiences where my critiques were unwanted, unnecessarily harsh, or just lackluster. That's a huge pet peeve for me as well.

Re: wacom alternatives. still can't believe mfs will shit on people using other brands despite XP pen & Huion smashing Wacoms stuff for years now. why would I get a Cintiq16 at $600... when I can get something on the same tier, better even for $200 less? heck my current tablet's a lower-end XP pen monitor and it lasted 4 years before starting to give out. long-time durability might not be an excuse anymore. idk next tablet's definitely not an overpriced wacom though

OT: Even as someone who likes zine-making & wants to make physical copies of my stuff someday printers are the worst devices to work with and I absolutely despise every time I need to use them. Test printing wastes a lot, misprints waste a lot (bonus: it's an extremely expensive print job), and god forbid the printer doesn't know what to do with the file and/or program you want to directly print from. Home printing is some of the worst imo because for something that's meant to be "convenient" I've fought with them so much + it's a nightmare of ink/plastic waste and scams

VVV ON GOD i am sick of people acting like you should never use harsh whites or blacks bc 90% of the time it's a style choice. And istg people tossing that those "tips" around never explain color & color balancing & how if you want to use off-whites it's EXTREMELY important to consider balancing it with the surrounding colors (ie using warmer whites for warmer palettes might keep it still feeling bright/not muted). And on shading with black... wonder what people who act like it's a sin would think about artstyles that use harsh-black shading (think: hellboy/Mignola)

^^^ Damn yeah I agree with this. At the very least either explain why it's better to do it "the right way" or state that it's your opinion. (because most of the time it is)
I've also seen a lot of people who parrot the same 5 things and don't even bother elaborating and god it's annoying and it just undermines genuine advice.

Original Topic:

Not sure if it's a design thing or a stylistic choice thing but it always irks me whenever I see kemonomimi characters with animal ears and then also having human ears. It just feels wrong.

Also can people just not harass artists that draw weird harmless stuff? Seriously people say shit like "Cringe culture doesn't exist! UwU" and then immediately after, make fun of someone because they drew something different. (Again I can't state this enough I mean weird stuff that's harmless.) Cringe culture isn't gone it's just targeting different people now.

1 more thing and then I'll shut up. It's more of a self peeve but is it supposed to be hard to learn to draw with your shoulder or is that just me?

I'll shut up now.

On a similar note, I hate how the internet treats beginnger artists. Instead of leaving them alone or giving good advice, they just roast their art for not being anatomically correct and cringe

Like damn ok, Picasso, let's see your art from your beginner days.
