General thoughts on forum games

How are you.

I've been snooping around on them. Sometimes claiming people for the fun of it. I'm just looking to discuss whatever comes to mind, I might even lock this thing after a while.
The only thing I ask is that you don't go out of your way to complain or talk about a specific person or be disrespectful in any way. This is meant to be more of a 'I think this aspect of forum games is kind of silly' or 'I think there's a trend with these games' type of thing.
Personally, I always feel like I should avoid certain games or just wait till some other person shows up. I'll see a character I like and think it'd be interesting to claim, but the aesthetics or whatever make me unsure about involving myself. I feel like they're always anime-esque or too good for my characters, so it just feels weird to put my plain old middle-aged men into the picture.

I mean I don't join IC games, because I don't roleplay generally and have no interest in that. But for any OOC game, I still feel the same like you do too. Most characters, and this doesn't only apply to games, are more leaning towards anime or similar. which is why you feel out of place or "not good enough". This has nothing to do with being not good enough however, you just don't have the same interests/don't like the same type of characters/aesthetics. But that doesn't mean your characters are bad, but trust me I have similar thoughts. That shouldn't destroy the fun for you tho. I highly doubt people are bothered being claimed by someone who isn't their "aesthetic". Not everyone has the same repeating anime type of ocs and if they expect that/ get mad, they shouldn't join games. Games are there to be fun!

Oh hey so I'm someone with a more anime-esque/cute cartoony style and types of characters, and I don't really mind seeing a variety of characters in these games! Drawing characters outside my usual type or artistic "comfort zone" can be fun (and a good way to practise drawing different stuff!), and I don't mind if someone with a different "aesthetic" claims one of mine - seeing one of my characters in a completely different style would be interesting! Like why even join a game like that if you aren't open to seeing your characters in different styles and stuff?

...I sometimes feel my OCs could be considered somewhat "boring" compared to others with them not having a proper backstory or developed universe or something, but whatever, I just like drawing and sometimes RPing my funny chars

Olliepop Haha, the poll isn't related. It's meant to ask how your day is going.

The thing I like about the FGs is that they're such a mixed bag. I feel like the way I approach writing and OCs in general doesn't really gel with anything I've encountered on TH either, but it's a fun exercise to find the middleground between my random loser and someone's anime prince. I'm aware my OCs lean uncomfortably gritty so I tend to avoid posting them in the more lighthearted games these days... but I do miss posting in them. Hmm...

I've been here for six years now, and I've seen the FGs change a lot. If there is a trend I dislike, it's the one toward taking the FGs too seriously. I go here to get away from my serious RPs... If one accepts it's a public forum full of randoms, some of whom will not write to your taste, one can attain inner peace 👌😌. Same goes for the art games. It's awesome if I do get reciprocation I like, but it's not the expectation....

I also notice a little cliquiness between the regs. This isn't an inherently bad thing--it's fun to build relationships (and, I'm a part of it too...)--but I think the FGs are at their best when they are welcoming to everyone, not just the same users claiming each other. I know it's not a conscious sort of shunning, but I can imagine how hard it might feel for a newer user to get a foothold in such a landscape. Wanna keep it random and keep it open minded yeah...

Its hit or miss for me. I tend to try and look for forums that are chill and not rp focused or ones with very specific stuff you gotta do in said thread. My fab forums section is character discussion even tho that isn’t r about discussion at all with all the “show me…” threads and whatnot. Its still enjoyable nonetheless and its the ones i tend go gravitate towards the most. I sometimes snoop around service reviews and general&off topic on occasion.

I love seeing the mish-mash of anime vs western style designs, ages between characters, huge personality disparities, etc. personally lol. it's a delightful reminder that we all have different tastes!
buuuuuut i haven't genuinely participated in the more lengthy/detailed FGs in a very long time ^^; i guess overall i'm impartial, neither negative nor positive. the biggest reason i avoid the FGs now is bc I don't have the energy to try hard at responses. i still enjoy the more chill games though (i.e. character color rainbow) = )

I am a forum game regular. The OOC ones, using IC with OOC responses, and the "one line would you say to the oc above" are quite more active than Roleplay focused IC ones from what I've seen. Since the Roleplay IC ones usually take more effort than most OOC/IC with OOC response ones. The ones you can give compliments, choosing which favorite art/character/design forum games a good place when you want to give positive thoughts to each others, Question based forum games are good to get to know each other or sharing a trivia/information bit about the OC from questions.

Sometimes I get a bit intimidated seeing RP focused IC threads though since I have an anxiety they won't like my responses or they or I might think my writing is bad but at the same time, i want it a bit active, and at least giving my writing a practice. (I am not a native english speaker so my IC writing could go rusty a bit). Also I noticed about IC games is you might see some "familiar names" when you look up an IC thread to another. Going to IC roleplay ones can be good if you want to develop your OCs or writing a bit, but there are ones that are quite short and don't need to write a lot yet can build up the way your OCs talk like this thread: https://toyhou.se/~forums/5865.forum-games/162599.what-s-one-line-your-oc-would-say-to-the-oc-above-?page=0 Sometimes you can learn how others write their own characters just reading their posts and their profiles as well...

There are also other topics outside art or writing as forum games, music for example such as this one. It's one thing you may discover different music or curious about other person's music taste. (examples: listen to the song from the user above you)

Do art games count

I own a forum game that has 1000+ posts on it and it scares me. I had to break up a fight once 😭

CannibalCupid

Crying I don't participate at all in forum games. I just get nervous when i think of doing so, but still i I they're fun and cool. It brings people together in a way lol

MIHAVI

Personally I think forum games are fun and I love seeing a diverse amount of characters. I really participate in quick ones or art based ones though, I always feel a bit bad my ocs have no coding or cool back stories, just art and trivia, and I can't roleplay or write for the life of me for the IC ones ^^;

I think the only downside is if you ever kill an active forum game for a few days or longer it makes you feel like your post or your ocs weren't good enough which kind of sucks. But the site is pretty slow so 🤷

Mutonian

valiant-quest Spill it. Simple terms and don't name names, what happened in the fight bahahaha

GoodKnight

It was a design game and somebody didn’t want the oc they got and put it in a trade folder and the designer got mad at them and demanded them to give it back

It was in a public comment section and everyone was being rly nasty
