Starting this document to develop my sci-fi plot in more detail was def a good idea. It's helped me get interested and re-engaged in the plot and I've got a much better idea of what's going on even though so far I've only covered what I consider to be the first half of the plot.
The file it's self is now standing at 7 pages and 3,000 words which is staggering to me. It's the most I've ever written for a story and I'm not even writing the actual story out yet, still planning and thought dumping ideas. The ideas aren't even laid out in a proper timeline of events either, just super rough bullet point lists though it's still proving useful to refer back to.
I have written 6,000 word story but ended up feeling like 90% of it was unnecessary filler to get a higher word count and scrapped the project, I generally average 900-2,000 words when I'm writing out odd scenes. Even my more developed Age of Sail plot file that is formatted as a timeline of events is only a 5 page document with 1,700 words though that's still a WIP. I still need to fill in events for 1804 and 1805 and the back end of 1802 and 1803 could do with being a little more filled out, the timelines for those years only seem go as far as October before jumping to the next year.
Back to the sci-fi plot timeline, it's fun being able to look back on various ideas I tried out and being able to see how each selected idea has developed and evolved as the document's gone on. Forcing myself to think about the WHY's of things has proven very beneficial rather than just trying to come up with some vague idea that sounds cool, I def see the benefit of coming up with a few different alternatives rather than sticking with the first thing that comes to mind. It's brought up some interesting ideas I may not of thought of if I wasn't thinking about the plot more critically.
