Dale is the one name I refuse to use for personal reasons. I don't use names of my close relatives because
I do some pretty shitty things to my characters and it would be weird, lol. I'll use pretty much any name
that fits the setting of the character as long as I like it. I try to make characters names match their ethnicity.
I don't really think there are any names that are off-limits unless I just don't like the way they sound? Bob, Patrick, etc.
Hello! I just thought this would be funny... xD
When it comes to naming OCs, there are some names no matter how appropriate meaning-wise or how much I like them... I never use because it reminds me too much of another person.
Are any names unusable for you?
Feel free to share stories <3 Who knows, maybe a name unusable for someone else might be good for you!
i avoid two trigger related names as well as deadname like the plague lol . i’ve tried naming ocs them in the past to try and get over it but it’s never ended well :P
other than that i generally don’t use names of people i currently know (people i’ve known in the past are names i use tho)
Penelope
Idk man just can't seem to like that name
I guess it's the way it sounds? Like mm not sure 🤔
//I KNOW I CAME 2 WEEKS LATE BUT
I wouldn't use the name "Brian" for any of my characters because my younger cousin and my brother's friend both have that name so it'd feel really awkward ("Hey, who's that?" "That's my character Brian" *cue awkward silence*) Same goes for the name Cody since that's my brother's name (granted his name is spelled with a 'K' but yeah)
I also tend to stay away from using foreign names for nonforeign characters but sometimes I end up using foreign names by accident
Example: I wrote a bunch of gibberish in a document when trying to come up with Sciracir's name; I picked several random letter combinations that sounded like names and then I picked "Kyo"... cue me realizing that it's actually a Japanese name FMLLL-
Same basic ordeal went for Suirin; I drew up her design, she went unnamed for a while, then I randomly thought up of the name "Suirin." I'm not sure if it's an actual Japanese name or not but I'm so ashamed oml-
The only characters I have that do have intentional foreign names are Tsuko and Kaguya (Tsuko is a tsukumogami which is a Japanese folkloric creature, Kaguya from the folkloric character of the same name). I dunno about how the hell I managed to come up with Seiko's name though, my own reasoning confuses me at times hhh
I never use names who sound extremely childish. For example strawberrycake or destroyer or.. shooting star . Y'now these kind of names Mary Sues or very VERY cringy or eyebleeding characters have.
For some reason these kind of OCS always have really bad names.
I also wouldn't use names from famous people. Well.. it probably depends but mainly not
Sarah, Kevin, Taylor
I normally try to avoid giving OCs names of people I've known irl, but those three names are the big no-no's and I can barely hear them without getting slightly annoyed due to said people with the names (luckily I don't have to have anything to do with them now)
old lady names, nothing personal but like,,, I can't like keep a straight face while saying those names.
I tend to not use family member's names (which crosses out like 40 names lol) and names of memorable characters from book series -- Opal, since that always reminds me of Opal Koboi from the Artemis Fowl books, and Jolie, which has been suggested to me but is the name of a character from Keeper of the Lost Cities... there's more but that's the basic idea of it.
I avoid my/friend's deadnames, and trigger names for me. Other than that, I tend more often than not to veer away from familiar names that have shown up in my family, albeit a few exceptions every now and again.
