Chapter 6

All the cats – bar those who had gone to visit Seaclan – sat patiently in the clearing at the centre of camp. Heronstar sat on her usual spot, having just summoned them.

”Thank you for being so swift, everyone. It’s not I that needs to talk, but Teasel-leaf. He has an announcement.” Heronstar looked towards where the large tabby tom sat at the back of the clearing, while suspicious muttering flickered between many of the cats. Teasel-leaf didn’t care (or so he claimed). He just stood, stretching his feet out in front of him as he did, and walked neatly between the cats – even between where Dragonetkit had decided to attack her sister again, somehow dancing between the kits such that not one of his hairs touched any of theirs – and jumped up next to Heronstar on the wall.

”As I hope everyone has noticed, Gustclan has grown a lot recently.” Indeed it had. The last time they’d called a meeting like this – outside apprentice ceremonies – there’d been three litters’ fewer cats or so. ”And due to recent… events… there are only two medicine cats. This is not enough for a clan this size. I need two volunteers to be trained as medicine cats starting from when Gannetpaw returns – hopefully as a medicine cat by then. I could take apprentices or older kits on, but I am afraid that will be significantly slower, and we need the new medicine cats as soon as possible, so I would much prefer warriors – or even just older apprentices. However, I will accept anyone for it who seems willing and up for the job. Please come to the medicine cat den as soon as you’ve decided – and only come if you’re sure. It’s not a light decision. Thanks.”

Teasel-leaf caught his sister’s eye in his peripheral vision, and felt the little sigh escape his chest at it. Anyone else..?-

”Oi, Teasel-leaf? I got proof we need more med cats pretty quick!” came a voice with alarm from the back of the clearing.

Teasel-leaf’s ears pricked up. ”Troutstripe? Head to the nursery. Keep yourself moving – within the nursery - until you have to stop.” The kits had to come while there was only one medicine cat in camp, didn’t they?
