Sunny's Age Progression

Sunny is about 19 at the start of the story with time skips of three to five years in between each volume.

Regarding Symbols

Sunny's personal symbol is an anchor, which often represents hope, strength, stability, security, and deep relationships. It also represents a deep love for the sea.

The crocus flower is symbolic to his hometown of Saffron Hills as their main export is the saffron spice and the town is surrounded by hillside crocus fields. In the language of flowers, the crocus flower represents youthful joy and love; this being said, harvest festivals are held every year in the fall and winter. Various treats are made with the collected saffron threads to share among family and friends.

Character Inspirations

Sunny shares commonalities with the following characters:

• Dunban (Xenoblade Chronicles) - Sunny perhaps shares many traits with this character. They look physically similar, but since Sunny is a few years younger than Dunban he has some room to grow. Like Dunban, Sunny is unshakably determined and always willing to put his life on the line for everyone else, although he can let boldness go to his head. Sunny is also surprisingly mature despite his eccentricity; he serves as a voice of reason in the main story and sometimes interprets the points Cat tries to make since spoken communication isn't one of her strong suits. Like Dunban, Sunny has a younger sister who he is quite protective of, even though she can hold her own; seeing as she's the only sibling he has, her safety and well-being are his biggest concern as her older brother. Sunny can be somewhat obstinate (referring to Dunban's skill tree), but reasonably so. Sunny usually doesn't let his emotions get to him, but he can be a big softy which he doesn't like to admit. In combat, Sunny's greatest strength is his agility. 
• Aladdin (Disney's Aladdin) - Like Aladdin; Sunny is steadfast, cheeky, selfless, heroic, resourceful, fun-loving, mischievous, sympathetic, witty, and bold. He can be a bit insecure at times. Like Aladdin; Sunny also has a monkey companion who is equally cheeky and cunning as his owner. Sunny is also known to outsmart his enemies. 
• Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean) - Like Captain Jack, Sunny is charismatic, comical, laid-back, and noble. Sunny has a heart of a pirate in this regard as he is also knowledgeable about sea travel and sailing.
• Cecil Aijima (Uta No Prince Sama) - Like Cecil, Sunny has a childlike curiosity for things that are new to him. Sunny demonstrates modesty and respect as he matures. Sunny has about the same complexion as Cecil but with ebony hair and brown eyes.
• Carlos Garcia (Big Time Rush) - Like Carlos, Sunny is the lovable daredevil of the Dynamic Dorks. Since Sunny is the youngest of the group, he has an air of childlike yet cheeky innocence that conceals his devil-may-care attitude. He and Atti are the biggest pranksters in the group.
• Itsuki Koizumi (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) - They both share their voice actor, Johnny Yong Bosch. Sunny is surprisingly philosophical than most people realize. Like Itsuki, Sunny is fair, carefree, and fond of his friends.

Voice Actor Notes

• For Johnny Yong Bosch as Sunny, he sounds close to Yu Narukami from Persona 4, Zorro/ Diego de la Vega from Zorro: The Chronicles, Firion from Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, or Makoto Tachibana from Free!. Sunny's voice has to range from charming dork to noble hero. Whatever the range, JYB's natural tone and vocal color is perfect for this character.
• For Mamoru Miyano as Sunny, he sounds close to Saburou from Nobunaga Concerto, Amai Mask from One Punch Man, or Tokiya Ichinose from Uta No Prince Sama. Miyano-san has a lot of range so it shouldn't be too hard to find a tone suitable for Sunny. Bonus: Throw in some Engrish and we're good to go!   
• Understudies for Sunny's English voice include Micah Solusod, Drew Seeley, Mark Hildreth, David Gallagher, and Jason Griffith
• Understudy for Sunny's Japanese voice is Matsuoka Yoshitsugu
