A basic history and explanations of the dragons in my world! The whole thing takes place in a sort of 'alternate earth', set far into the future. All abilities detailed in each section are big generalizations; I mean just look at Mira! Not all dragons are the same, after all. (Any future dragons who live here will be added to the cast.)

Neo-Pangaea and Dragons

The year is… far into the future; by this point all of the main bodies of land have begun to crash back into each other, so now the oceans that once separated them are just really big lakes. Something like that. All kinds of people are meeting up, and languages and ethnicities are slowly beginning to blend together. At this point things are about half-blended, so this new country is at an awkward adolescent phase. There isn’t a set name yet, but many people like to refer to it as ‘Neo-Pangaea’.

The (quadrupedal) dragons in this world were endangered, lingering on the verge of extinction, and they didn’t want to die out! So they used their blessings of wisdom and magic to shift into human forms and go repopulate among the actual humans. They didn’t necessarily need to preserve ‘dragons’ as a race, rather the vast knowledge kept within dragon circles and families. It was alright if dragons and humans were indistinguishable, as long as the new generations continued to record this knowledge. However, some dragons were sufficiently worse at magic than others, and as a result the children they had with those humans were caught in a strange limbo between human and beast. Many children were born with draconic features, like horns, tails, sometimes even scales or wings! Because of the ‘pure’ human blood and the already weak magical abilities of their dragon parents, these children were unable to use magic to hide their dragon features.

However, the natural abilities of these dragons began to spread through their half-human offspring. At first these half-humans were ostracized, belittled, and even hunted sometimes, but thanks to their draconic abilities they were able to establish some sort of dominance. At this point dragon-humans have become the status quo, and are referred to as just ‘dragons’. There’s still prejudice on all sides, but it isn’t always very evident at first glance.

Dragons in the North

(Talia, Fuyumi, Mira)

The dragons of northern areas were gifted with strong perception and observation skills. As a result, the offspring of northern dragons often have a few abilities along with their dragon features. One of these abilities is called Truesight, and it alters the vision of that particular dragon. The specific effects greatly vary from dragon to dragon, some are even completely unique to one person! The other ability is an alternate form that is slightly more ‘draconic’. This form enhances some aspect of the dragon, usually a sense or physical/mental ability, and can usually cannot be triggered at will. Occasionally northern dragons will be able to shift completely into ‘true’ dragons, but this puts a great strain on the body because it isn’t aided by any magic. This form generally only comes out in times of true desperation.

The north has the lowest population of ‘true’ dragons.

Dragons in the South

(Damien, Inpu, Chaparral)

The ‘true’ dragons of the south weren’t nearly as concerned with extinction as the other dragons, and so there was no rush to spread through the humans. Some chose to though, and they eventually formed tight-knit families that were separated from all ‘true’ humans. There were around four main families in the south; including Adenium, Nerine, Hyacinthus, and Laelia. These families weren’t totally separated from each other (they wanted to keep as much human blood out of the mix as they could), but as time went on these sentiments diminished and they began welcoming humans into their families. If a dragon is born to, say, an Adenium mother and a Nerine father, they can choose to join the Adenium or Nerine family once they come of age. If one of those parents is a human, they can choose to leave the families altogether. These rules aren’t law, but leaving your family when you have all dragon parents is generally seen as disgraceful.

These dragons don’t have any particularly fancy natural abilities, but they are generally physically stronger than most other dragons. The south has the highest population of ‘true’ dragons.

Dragons in the West

(Elaine)

These dragons are very in tune with the elements, but only by necessity. The western lands were pretty unruly on an elemental scale (extreme weather, a general imbalance between elements, that sort of thing), and so they had to adapt to better fit into this area. The dragon parts of western dragons are enhanced with the elements, like horns made of fire or a tail made of crystals, something along those lines. This gives them a tolerance to the chaos of their home, and allows them to actually live in their homes.

They have the second-highest population of ‘true’ dragons, but the lowest population of humanoids. I mean, no one really wants to live here.

Dragons in the East

(None yet)

I’m working on this one, it’s still up in development. We’ll get to it haha. They have the second-lowest population of ‘true’ dragons.
