Angel lore (wip)

Angels are one of the species that appear in my universe and stories. They are my second most common species, right after humans. My angels can be easily understood with a vague cultural baggage of their role in religion and pop culture ("nice and immortal winged humanoids living in the sky"), but they still come with a bit of additional lore I'd recommend reading if you want to understand their society better.

History

Will copy and reword from Lumirel's profile

Anatomy and appearance

Angels are immortal and made non-physical matter. They are intangible, but can still affect the physical world if they want to. While angels can ingest food and drinks, they aren't affected by the side effects of drugs and alcohol. They also can't get sick or injured. Their "winged humanoid" form is their only form. They can't change their appearance, except when they turn into humans. Angels can naturally have any hair or eye colour. Their skin colour, however, can only be one naturally found in humans.

Although angels experience no ageing nor physical growth, their hair is capable of growth (albeit to a slower pace than humans). This allows angels to naturally change their hairstyle if they want to.

Halos are vestigial. They used to be the seat of angels' life energy before they became immortal (see History). Breaking or stealing an angel's halo would kill them. Their halo would also break if an angel died of other causes. After they all became immortal, angels can survive even without a halo.

Their bodies have no internal organs, save for a "ball of light" located in their chest area. Usually called their "heart", it is the source of the angel's energy and powers, and basically replaces their halo in its role. Their heart also emits a specific kind of energy, called "aura". It is different from angel to angel and can be used to recognize each other. Although usually completely hidden behind clothes, the light of their heart can be seen faintly through their skin. It is said that the more loving the angel, the brighter is the light of their heart.

Angels are also completely sexless and all have a rather androgynous appearance. Still, their parents usually assigned them pronouns at birth, and sometimes even raised their children in a "gendered" manner because of that. Angels can be of any gender, but nonbinary identities are commonplace. Gender roles aren't as important as they are in human societies, and angels of any gender can wear any kind of clothes. A important thing to note, however, is that they don't wear too revealing clothes.

Lack of imagination

Angels lack imagination and the ability to create: they can't draw nor paint, write a book, compose music, etc. It is not forbidden, but an actual impossibility to do so. Still they, can appreciate the beauty of art, or critique it if they are knowledgeable enough to do so. Because of that, angel are greatly admiring of humans for their creations and inventions, and it isn’t rare for an angel to be a fan of a human artist or inventor, as angels can't become one themselves.
However, angels are still able to sing songs as long as they didn’t compose it themselves, or write sentences as long as they do not require creative skills, such as a list of events, or a note to someone, etc.
Some exceptions to this lack of ability to create do exist, but they are extremely rare and said to make one divine. Lumirel and Uyniam are the only known exceptions to this day; actually, Lumirel finding out that Uyniam was able to create was part of the reason for her banishment. Lumirel gave this ability of Hers to humans when She created them.

Angels and archangels

Relationship with demons

Demons are "fallen angels". Princess Lumirel and Prince Michel can send angels to Hell when they break Heaven's rules. At their arrival, they are automatically turned into demons and get their memories of their previous life erased because of Mayor Uyniam's powers. She does it so demons won't have to deal with trauma or feel like outcasts. Because of that, demons don't know they're basically just a subspecies of angels. Most angels don't know either because that's not something they tend to be interested in; they are just taught that demons are their enemies.

In a nutshell, the relationship between angels and demons isn't very good. Angels are taught that demons are bad, brutal, disgusting, etc, while demons are aware that angels think they're superior to them for no real reason, and find that revolting. Most demons aren't bad people, as they're just angels that broke a rule once and got caught.

Relationship with humans

Angels are invisible to humans unless they choose to. Most small children can also see and interact with them; they usually lose this ability when they start to talk. Angelic beings are revered in several human religions.

(Note: Despite their appearance, humans are a very, very different species from angels. It is unthinkable to think that an angel would ever with in love with a human. Angel/human relationships in Judecca will always be strictly platonic, no exceptions.)

When on Earth, interacting with humans, angels have to follow some rules; violating them would be punished by a banishment to Hell:

  • It is forbidden for angels to hurt humans. It is even more reprehensible to kill humans, or let them die when their life could be saved.
  • It is forbidden for angels to use their status or powers to make humans fear and/or respect them for their own personal gain (ie. obtain money, material goods, fame, etc.).
  • Angels are only allowed to be visible as their true self in moderation (ie. during a critical situation, if they have an important message to deliver, if they have a close relationship with a human, etc.). Otherwise, angels should either stay invisible, or assume a human appearance.
Guardian angels

Notable examples: Harahel and Raziel

Not everyone gets a guardian angel at birth. It's Lumirel and/or Michel who choose who they want to assign an angel to. Prince Raphaël helps them to pick the most fitted angel for said human. Angels can also volunteer to become guardians themselves; in that case, they can usually pick their human. Being a guardian angel is seen as a taxing and honourable job, and thus such angels are regarded with high respect by their peers.

The main role of a guardian angel is to protect their human so they don't die before their time. The relationship between an angel and the human they have been assigned to (called "protégé(e)") is usually very intimate, but often one-sided due to the fact most humans are unaware of their angel's presence. An angel can only have one protégé in their whole existence.

Because of guardian angel being the most common angelic job, they form a sort of sub-community with their own culture, important figures, and beliefs. A widespread belief in the one in a "guardian angel instinct"; meaning that all guardian angels naturally know to take care of a human, and are bound to unconditionally love the one they have been assigned to. During their mission on Earth, some angels can also create ties with their neighbouring colleagues, like the angels of their protégé's friends or family.

Human disguises

Notable examples: AzariasHenri, and Ambroise-Amédée

Angels can turn into humans at will. Their human appearances are just their regular appearance minus their angelic attributes (wings, halo...) and other elements that would look out of place (unnatural hair colour). They can't really control that, however, they can choose their clothes.

Their disguise usually work perfectly on humans. However, other angels can easily recognize them. Their toned-down aura can also still affect animals and small children. While angels themselves don't have religions, they often pick one (or an irreligion) based on their personality and personal philosophy.
