Forget Me Not Angel Lore

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the individual ideas, it is the combination of these traits and lore work that constitutes the closed species.

Background

Forget Me Not Angels and Calamitous Devils are not naturally born, but rather humans who have had their lives cut short before their time. A pair of dueling deities have been collecting these unfortunate souls and offering them a chance at another form of life - to be reborn as an FMN Angel or Calamitous Devil. These beings then roam the earth, looking for the things they were missing before they died or causing trouble in order to be truly reborn.

Every angel is given a flower that represents their fears, desires, wishes, or whatever else they might have been feeling right before they died, a feeling harbored so strongly as to leave an impression on their very being. These flowers constantly bloom are or blooming around their head and wings, and they leave a trail of petals or flowers behind them when they walk. These are not normally visible to the human eye, but those with a sixth sense or those tied by destiny to the angel can sometimes see them.

Once a FMN Angel is able to find what they were missing, they are presented with a choice by their patron deity - to be reborn as a full angel or to become human once again. If they choose to be reborn as a human they get to continue their human life down on earth, as if they had never died. However this can be dangerous as it involves rewriting the past and affects those around them a great deal. If they choose instead to become a full angel, they become a Salvation Angel and gain heightened abilities, often acting as guardian angels for other humans or guiding mentors for less developed FMN Angels.

Wings

Wing Type

The wing type of an FMN is based entirely around how their humans selves died. The granting of these wings is instant and not based on any kind of judgment, so it is impossible for an FMN to lie their way into different kinds of wings. Now sometimes these things are a bit of a gray area, but the wing type comes from the feelings around the death of their human selves and so not every case is absolute. Dying in a car accident is technically someone's fault, but is often times considered an accident and so mostly causes white wings, etc.

  • White Wing []- These wings are from accidental deaths. While an angel with white wings may have had troubles in their past life, they never would have chosen to die themselves and no one was truly to blame for their death. These are the most plentiful of FMN Angels as most of the time an accident is to blame for someone dying before their time. White wings have the easiest time being reincarnated and are the most resistant to CDs mischief.
  • Black Wing []- These come from suicide victims. This is a person who wanted to die and went through with the act themselves. Black winged FMNs tend to have a harder time completing their mission as their sorrows in life were much greater, or they felt much less hope of ever being completed. The flowers on these angels struggle to bloom and they frequently have fewer flowers than their white winged counterparts, putting them at much greater risk of injury.
  • Half and Half Wing []- A half and half wing is someone who wanted to die and succeeded, but often times due to accident or misadventure. Sometimes it is a person who attempts suicide but changes their mind partway through. This is a person torn between wanting to die and wanting to live, and suffers some ill effects because of it. They are trapped in a state of conflict and have a much harder time finding what they are missing, as they often have no idea what that something could be.
  • Tainted White []- Tainted wings are always the sign of a murder victim. Their death was steeped in violence and so their wings are stained red at the ends, and can even drip blood in some cases. A tainted white wing is a true victim and did nothing to incur the wrath that fell upon them, much like their normal white winged counterparts.
  • Tainted Black []- In rare circumstances, someone who wanted to die gets someone else to do the job for them. While this is still considered murder, they are given the black wings of a person who wanted to kill themselves.
  • Tainted Half and Half []- In extremely rare cases, a tainted wing FMN can be granted half and half wings. This is basically someone who wanted to die but changed their mind, angering someone else in the process. Or it can be someone who, while being killed, decided to welcome the violence and death. It is a very rare thing to see and is considered very difficult to come back from.

Wing Length

Wings can be pretty much any length. It is fairly normal for wings to be toe length or even a little longer, as well as much shorter, around hip length. Wing length tends to correlate to the angel's idea on their own purity, however they choose to define that. Since wings are granted instantly and not by any outside force, they always tell the truth of the angel's feelings, but can often times be surprising. The only rare wing length are chest length wings, affectionately known as baby wings. They can even be upturned and fold up. These wings are created when the person doesn't have a strong idea or opinion of themselves that goes one way or the other. The shorter the wings, the more trouble they have flying, and those with baby wings can't fly at all.

Injured Wings (God's Punishment)

Most things are unable to injure an FMN. Humans can't cause enough damage to actually injure an angel, and it is rare for another FMN Angel to severely wound another. Calamitous Devils can do a lot of damage but the injuries are often healed by the FMNs flowers. The only thing that can permanently damage an FMNs wings is their deity themselves. Both FMNs and CDs are recruited blind by both of their parent deities snapping up as many souls as they can manage, and not every one of those souls is cut out for the job. Some FMNs can be wild or sometimes even quite evil. In order to be worthy of being permanently maimed, the FMN has to do severe or permanent damage to a human or another angel.

Burnt wings [] - The first level of punishment, the ends of the wing are burnt up in divine fire. This leaves behind bits of skeleton and the top part of the wing, so the second wing is still pretty recognizable, if injured. This is usually due to an angel doing things they shouldn't do, but not directly killing or maiming anyone - conspiring with CDs or the dark deity, for example, or plotting injury to their fellow angels.

Skeletal Wing [] - This is the mid level punishment. This leaves the skeleton of the wing intact but every single feather has been plucked off. This is done for injury or death to humans or other angels, but where the deity believes they can change their ways. This person still isn't necessarily irredeemable, but they are pretty far gone.

27132796_bWAFmram7Gcb2Ef.png

One Wing [] - The final, most severe punishment. An entire wing has been ripped off, leaving a scar and a wound that will never fully heal. This is the brand of a true traitor, someone who has caused wanton destruction, misery, and death. A person with this level of punishment is completely irredeemable, and while their deity doesn't kill his angels, an angel branded this way will never be reborn or trusted by their own kind again.

It is extremely, extremely rare for an angel to be punished on both wings, so usually the unblemished wing will be one of the normal colors. For an angel to have a God's Punishment on both wings they would have to have committed truly horrific crimes.

Flowers

Flowers are constantly growing on the FMN's head, their wings, and on their back. They can also leave a trail of these as they walk, either shed off of them or literally blooming in their footsteps.

Forget Me Nots and Hydrangeas are of a special sacredness to this species and may not be used on any design in any color.

Flower Meanings

Every FMN is given a flower to represent them, in some form or another. This flower is created by a powerful emotion or longing when they died, and is a clue to help them find what they are missing so that they can be reborn. These flowers can be created for any number of reasons, so it's up to each FMN to figure out what their flower means to them. Sometimes, when a person doesn't have a clear direction in life, multiple flowers can be granted. The more flowers an FMN has, the more confused they will be going forward in trying to find what they need to be reborn. It will take a bit more time, but every flower is still a clue to the a loose end or need that will help them.

Flower's Power

The flowers, while granted to an FMN as a clue to help them, are still magical and thus have benefits and costs to their host. The most important function that the flowers grant is the enhanced healing abilities of the FMN. Most things, except for a deity, can't harm an FMN Angel in any permanent way. This is because the flowers draw out the injury and give their life in exchange to heal their host, and then shed as dead flowers. This means that different winged FMNs heal at different rates as white winged FMNs produce more healthy flowers than black or half and half winged. This is also a crucial component in healing corruption caused by a CD, and a CD can only convert a FMN if they overpower this healing process.

Also, the flower's meaning affects how others see the FMN. While normal humans can't see the wings or flowers of an FMN and see them instead as normal humans, those things affect the "aura" of the FMN. So even though they look normal, people tend to get a feeling about them, and that feeling is controlled by the effects of the flowers. This is heavily based on the flower itself, and not every example of each flower will present the same way. It tends to vary from person to person. Multiple flowers mean they may come off differently to different people, or sometimes will just present an aura that is confusing and will cause people to distrust them.

Finally, FMNs that share a flower combination will tend to find themselves bonding easily, and can oftentimes get along. This is doubly true if they have the same wing type. No one really know why this is, except perhaps something in their soul or previous life was the same and so they have an automatic understanding of one another. Whatever the reason, when two FMNs with the same flower combination get together, the power of their flower's effect on others is amplified, and can sometimes even be directed. This can be both a good and a bad thing, depending on the effect, and needs to be carefully monitored.

Flower Eyes []

As an FMN searches for their missing piece in order to be reborn, sometimes they can get obsessed with their mission. When this happens, the flowers slowly begin to spread across their face, covering their eyes. It can cover either one or both of their eyes, and can even grow densely along the entire brow line of the face. The FMN can still see due to the magical connection every angel has with their flowers, but people who can see the flowers can't see their eyes. This condition can recede if the FMN gets a little more level-headed or if they figure out what they needed.

Flowers and Wings

Flowers grow differently depending on the type of FMN. On white wings, the flowers grow back nearly instantly, and they bloom freely all over the FMN. On a black winged FMN, these flowers struggle a lot more and many of them wither, leaving a trail of wilting petals behind them. A half and half wing experiences both of these, where some wilt and others thrive. A tainted wing FMN's flowers will often become covered in blood from the bleed effect on their wings, however otherwise they grow based on the main wing type.

Cuffs

All FMNs have cuffs on their ankles to show the invisible chain connecting them to this world, the thing that keeps them from drifting off into the afterlife permanently. Some length of this chain may be visible but the chain is magic and generally disappears after a short length. The material of the cuffs is tied to their wing type - gold for white wing and black for black wing, and half and half has one of each. Tainted FMNs don't have a special cuff, the color is tied to their main wing type. The cuffs are very thin and virtually immaterial, so they can be hidden under boots and other large shoes, but if the ankle is exposed the cuff will be visible. They weigh nothing and don't affect flight or walking, they are merely there to help protect the FMN from fading away.

So far, there is no record of the cuff or chain ever being broken. They look like tattoos to normal humans and can only be seen by other FMNs, CDs, and those with a sixth sense or who are tied to the FMN in some way.

Halo

  • Halo Rarity: []

Some FMNs, for reasons completely unknown, develop halos when they go through their transformations. These are not halos of light or divinity like a true angel's halo, but rather a manifestation of their magic and relate directly to their wing type.

If a FMN Angel has been given a celestial blessing, the halo of the FMN will have celestial effects as well in some FMNs. This isn't always the case, but it is an option if a given FMN has both traits.

  • White Wing - White winged FMNs have a halo made of flower blossoms or petals, and these petals continuously fall on their head and shoulders. These flowers aren't used for healing and the FMN has little control over them.
  • Black Wing - For these kinds of FMNs, their halo resembles a twisting of thorns shaped like a crown. They can be shaped slightly differently but it's always black thorns and always a crown. It hovers off of their head so it doesn't hurt them.
  • Half and Half Wing - These FMNs have a sort of combination halo, a crown of thorns covered in flowers to represent their conflicted nature.
  • Tainted Wings - Regardless of other types of wings, any FMN with a tainted type wing has a halo of blood instead of another kind. There are two concentric rings of floating liquid that sluggishly flows in a circular motion, floating above the FMNs head.

Celestial Blessing

  • Celestial Blessing Rarity: []

Occasionally an FMN Angel will go above and beyond the call of duty and do something selfless or spectacular. In this case, their patron deity will sometimes grant a truly amazing thing, a celestial blessing on the FMN. This blessing causes their flowers to become enchanted, replacing the color and surface of the flower with galactic stardust. How this exactly manifests is often down to each individual FMNs magic, but these enchanted flowers always sparkle with stardust. These blessed flowers never die for any reason, making the FMN immune to corruption from a CD and nearly impossible to injure. It is completely unheard of for an angel who has been punished by their deity to also be blessed.

Salvation Form FMN Angel

  • Salvation Form Rarity: []

With enough effort, a FMN can find the thing that they need in order to feel complete, and at that point they are presented with a choice. On the one hand, they can be reborn as a human as if they had never died, going back to their former life and getting a second chance on earth. Most go for that option, but for some they don't wish to be reborn for one reason or another. In that case, they can reborn as a Salvation Angel, kind of a very powerful form of what they were before. This angel is imbued with celestial divinity and is understandably impressive. Often times they will be given jobs such as a guardian angel for at risk humans, or other times they will even mentor or protect other FMNs still on their journey.

Unique Traits

  • Bouquet Flowers - Unlike a normal FMN a Salvation Angel has tight and dense bunches of flowers gathered across the wings and around where the wings meet the back, like a soft bed of flowers. The abundance of their magical power causes the flowers to flourish and bloom in broad patches.
  • Divine Wings - Not only does a Salvation Angel have two sets of wings (upper and lower), but the wings are always white with golden tips and a golden shimmer. It doesn't matter if the angel was a black wing or tainted or anything else before they were elevated, these angels are always completely divine.
  • Light Halo - All Salvation Angels have a halo made of angular hard light as well, somewhere in the white/silver/yellow range.
