Calamitous Devil Lore

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the individual ideas, it is the combination of these traits and lore work that constitutes the closed species.

Background

Forget Me Not Angels and Calamitous Devils are not naturally born, but rather humans who have had their lives cut short before their time. A pair of dueling deities have been collecting these unfortunate souls and offering them a chance at another form of life - to be reborn as an FMN Angel or Calamitous Devil. These beings then roam the earth, looking for the things they were missing before they died or causing trouble in order to be truly reborn.

The devil is branded with a tattoo of the sin they fall under somewhere on their body, and these brands are also normally invisible to those around them. This sin brand is not related to anything they want or desire for themselves, but rather what kind of person they may have been in their previous life. Sometimes even small sins are magnified during the process of becoming a devil, so someone who was not a bad person in life may end up with a very severe sin even if their infraction was very small.

Calamitous Devils do not have the option of becoming human again. Their dark god doesn't have the power to rewrite the past and allow the devil to live as if they had never died. The souls that are taken, willingly or unwillingly, by the dark god have no way to return to their former life. Instead, if they spread enough corruption and pain using the power of their sin brand, they are allowed to be reborn into a more powerful, higher form of devil, known as a Damnation Devil. These function in much the same way a Salvation Angel does in that it is a much more powerful form and acts as a mentor to others, but Damnation Devils are leaders and warriors, and will often cause untold calamity among humans.

Rarity Breakdown

This is to help with slots, so I wanted to break down each trait and what rarity things fall under. Please refer to this if there are any questions! The traits are explained below.

  • Common - [] Large wings, 1 sin/tail
  • Uncommon - [] Medium wings, 2 sins/tail
  • Rare - [] Small wings, 3-4 sins/tail, horns
  • Very Rare - [] 5-6 sins/tails
  • Legendary - [] 7 sins/tails, dead flowers (FMN converted to CD)

Sins

Every CD falls under one of seven categories, based around the seven sins. This classification is determined by whichever sin the person committed or identified with the most, even if their infraction in life was small. Unlike FMNs, who are given flowers to represent their emotions and will to live, CDs aren't given anything like that - just a brand that gives them increased ability to manipulate that sin in other people.

Each brand is circular and can be put anywhere on the body, and they get one for each sin they possess. They also gain an additional tail for every sin. One sin is most common, but two or three isn't that unusual. Anything above that becomes increasingly rare, with a seven sin devil almost unheard of. A seven sin CD can have black sclera, but doesn't always.

The sin mark is usually on the back of the hand, but it can definitely go anywhere else on the skin as well. This sin tends to mean different things to different devils, and can even be a sin they feared rather than one they indulged in.

Wings

All CDs have jet black wings that have attributes similar to a bat's. They come in three different general sizes, small, medium, and large. Small wings are very thin and narrow, usually only about chest height. Medium sized wings go down to the hips, and large sized wings go down to the feet. The wing size generally correlates to a level of "evil" in the CD, or rather their dedication to their sin and to their dark god's cost. Small wings are a sign of a reluctant soul and tend to be somewhat shunned or disliked by other CDs.

Cuffs

CDs have a pair of black cuffs on their ankles like FMNs do, thin and immaterial and with an invisible chain to keep them grounded to this world. However, unlike FMNs, they also have cuffs and chains around their wrists as well, to indicate that they have a lot less freedom spiritually than FMNs do. Their cuffs only come in one color - black - because their dark god doesn't have the power of salvation the way that the divine one does.

On top of that, CDs have a golden contract cuff around each of their tails. This is a bond made of pure gold that helps give the CD their demonic powers, and it contains a stamp in the broad side of the gold. Every tail on every CD has the exact same cuff, there is no rarity associated with it.

All of their cuffs look like tattoos to normal humans, and anyone without a sixth sense can't see the tails and wings at all.

Horns

  • Horns Rarity: []

Some CDs, when they receive their wings and sin assignment, they are given a commission to have a pair of horns crafted for them. These are a gift as CDs can't grow horns themselves and are separated from other devils because of this. Sometimes the horns are given to show favor, and other times as a reward for a job well done. The material and shape of the horns are determined by the CDs other traits.

A devil can only have one set of horns, and if they have multiple sins, they must chose the horn style they favor most.

Material

The material a devil's horn is made of is based on their ranking in the hierarchy, a ranking based on the number of sins a devil has. Higher ranking devils can use lower ranking materials if they so chose, but a devil cannot make horns of a higher rank than their own.

  • Brimstone Horns - These are for any devil with 1-3 sins. The horns are made from easy to acquire brimstone, which is either a black or a reddish black stone. It can be either rough and jagged or smooth and polished.
  • Gold/Silver Horns - Precious metal horns are for devils with 4-6 sins. These are either metal and can be dull or shiny based on preference.
  • Bone Horns - White/yellowed bone horns are reserved for 7 sin devil generals only. These horns are made from the bones of other creatures and sometimes, horrifyingly, FMNs or other CDs.

Shape

  • Wrath - These horns are angular and aggressive, making curves at sharp angle in almost a Z shape on the side of the head.
  • Pride - While otherwise straight and plain, Pride horns are carved and ornamented with chains or metal plating to show off their opulence.
  • Envy - Embodying their feeling or having less, Envy horns are small and rather nubby, wide at the base and then narrowing sharply in a droplet shape.
  • Gluttony - These horns are some of the largest, curving out around the head and rising tall like a spire straight up.
  • Greed - A crown of thorns alternating between a short spike and a tall spike, going across the top of the head from ear to ear. They have the most horns of all.
  • Lust - Curved, twisted, and devious, the Lust horns slither upwards.
  • Sloth - Sloth horns look untended, wild and overgrown, resembling less horns and more branches or antlers as they grow out in various directions.

Other Forms

Converted Calamitous Devil

  • Converted CD Rarity: []

Sometimes, after prolonged contact with a Calamitous Devil, or sometimes by pact, a FMN can be transformed into a Calamitous Devil. Normally an FMNs flowers would absorb the curse and shed in order to keep the FMN healthy, but that healing factor can be overwhelmed. This is especially likely for a black winged FMN who's flowers struggle to live already. The process is slow and painful, with the wings losing their feathers from the top down and transforming into a CD's wings. Also, as this process happens, the FMN experiences a mythic illness known as hanahaki, which is a curse where the FMN is constantly coughing up flower petals and seems to experience severe flu like symptoms.

The FMN who is converted will always have a permanent connection to the CD that converted them, often being weak to suggestion or other corruptions from their poisoner. As for the CD, it is a great feather in their cap to have converted a FMN, and often comes with some measure of prestige.

Unique Traits

  • Flowers - Most CDs do not have flowers, with converted CDs the sole exception. However, the flowers are permanently dead. In the case of the CD having horns, the flowers will be tangled around the horns as well.
  • Before and After - Converted CDs always come with two designs, one of the CD before when they were a FMN and one after conversion.

Damnation Form Calamitous Devil

  • Damnation Form CD Rarity: []

Similar to how a FMN can become fully divine through choosing to devote themselves to good instead of being reborn, a CD can become fully damned by choosing to wholeheartedly devote themselves to evil. This can happen any number of ways including converting a number of FMNs or tempting a large number of humans, but sometimes it's just through favoritism. A Damnation form CD is equally as impressive as a Salvation form FMN, and the two are mortal enemies because they are the favorite and most powerful soldiers of their gods. These powerful Devils are amazing warriors and are well versed in all the terrible things their dark god needs from them.

Unique Traits

  • Unique Horns - As a full devil, these CDs are finally given a set of horns all their own, and these horns have unique and curious shapes.
  • Hellfire Wings - The CDs wings become huge in size, sometimes growing twice the size of their body and sometimes splitting into two sets. These wings have licks of flames around the center joints of the wings and sometimes coming from the tips. This fire doesn't hurt the CD, but will hurt others.
  • Black Sclera - These CDs are completely tainted, inside and out, and even the whites of their eyes have turned dark. Unlike 7 sin CDs which may have black sclera or may not, Damnation Devils always do and their eyes have an unnatural glow.
