Saura

About

The Saura is the spirit that makes up the heart and soul of a Lockette. In essence, it is a Lockette without a physical form. Each Lockette contains a unique Saura which is composed of the genetic makeup of one or more creatures of the land. It is not known if these are simply ghosts who have manifested in a visible sense, or if they are simply the spirit of Mother Earth herself blessing the land. There is still a huge divide between those who take either side, though one thing is for certain, these spirits are sacred and wonderful.

Humankind still has little understanding of the species, at it defies scientific knowledge, in spite of thorough research that has been ongoing for hundreds of years. The ethics of this research were called into question, resulting in 'The Last War', which has seen a ban in unregulated mistreatment and abuse.

These spirits only manifest at a single, sacred location known as the Heartlands. They are only visible once a year, and will only take form under the light of the moon. The festival gathering is exclusively attended by Lockettes. The first known sighting of a Saura is still unknown, as the heartlands used to be entirely barren for centuries. But in the last 500 years, Lockettes have made themselves known to the wider world. They inhabit empty shells to become a Lockette in whole, the body acting as the container for their physical forms.

Faiure to Seal

This can happen for a number of reasons. Having no physical container for the spirit can cause their ethereal forms to degenerate rapidly. If the spirit is too weak, the Saura will vanish into the air. This is the most common, though it is never consider sad, as their energy still lives on through the Earth and Air. Sometimes, the spirit will become lost, not finding a shell to contain themselves, and will wander the Earth alone until they eventually degenerate as well. It is said that stronger spirits are capable of surviving months after manifestation, though thanks to attentive residents of the Heartlands, these spirits are often soon discovered and sealed in a host shell.

There is another reason for Lockettes to fail to reach their host, sabotage.

If a spirit is seen as wicked or cursed, residents will do their best to ward them off or deny them a container, forcing them to wander until they vanish. Each year this happens, they come back stronger and wiser, finding new ways to manifest. These spirits don't just look dangerous, in some cases, they most certainly are.
