Supernatural beings.

Witches and wizards.

While generally, people refer to a female magic user as a witch, and a male one as a wizard, both terms can be used for either gender.
Witches and wizards are humans who have magical abilities.
Magical abilities are inherited, and reveal themselves during childhood. Not all witches are equally powerful, or have a special talent such as watermagic or divinition. People with parents who have no magic may inherit magic from some other ancestor.

Werewolves.

Werewolves are people who turn into a large wolf during the full moon. The transformation is involuntary. When they are in wolf form, they lose their humanity, and they have no memory of what they did when they were transformed.

The curse of the werewolf is passed on through birth or through the bite of another werewolf.
Once someone is turned into a werewolf, wolf traits seep into their personality. They develop a taste for meat, keep their night vision, sharper senses and like living in packs. In some, the wolf traits are stronger than in others.

In wolf shape, a werewolf has larger strength, speed and stamina than a normal wolf. They have faster reflexes and a greater endurance for pain and other physical discomforts.

Some werewolves are capable of controlling their transformation. This is done through an enchantment that is passed on in certain werewolf packs. When this is done, the werewolf keeps his human consciousness in wolf shape, and he can shift whenever he/she wants. Some gain the ability to partially shapeshift. They are still bound to transform during the full moon.
Werewolves who can control their curse are allowed to become a member of the supernatural society.

A werewolf in human form can be recognised by the scar, left from the bite that turned him and in some cases by the tattoo that allows him control over the curse.

Undead

Liches

Liches are dark mages, usually necromancers, who tried using their magical abilities to gain immortality, and ended up undead instead. They retain their intelligence, personality and magic, and they are able to control zombies. They can regenerate their bodies, up to growing back limbs and organs etc. They can be killed by destroying their heart, which is why they hide it.

Zombies

Zombies are reanimated corpses. They have limited intelligence and personality, and have no ties to the life they had when they were still alive. They don't need sustenance or feel pain, and are usually killed by destroying their brain or by fire.

Vampires

Vampires are undead who were created by being bitten by another vampire. They feed on blood. Leave bite marks in the neck. They retain their intelligence, personality and if they have it, their magic. They are strong, fast and heal faster than average humans.

There are three types of vampires:
The first kind are the typical pale types with fangs. They are immortal and can't stand sunlight. They like to stick together, always being loyal to their clan first. They can be killed with fire and wooden stakes.
They keep servants. These servants have been bound to their vampire clan.

Succubi feed on seks. Feed through the physical act of seks.

Psychic vampires who feed on emotions. Don't require physical contact. They like to isolate their victims in order to prevent detection. People who've been fed on by an emotional vampire become numb, tired and start looking unhealthy. They may recover, but long term exposure may affect one's health in a more serious way.
Emotional vampires look just like regular humans. They prefer to operate alone, and will view another emotional vampire as a threat.

Faeries

Faeries are beings with bodies, made out of light, meaning they have abilities humans don't have, such as invisibilty, flight and the ability to pass through solid objects. They differ greatly in shape and a lot of them are shapeshifters.
Most faeries are not very interested in humans, and prefer to stay hidden from them. As a side effect of their magic, a lot of other supernatural beings are able to see them.
Faeries have nature based magic that comes very easy to them. Often, all they need is a thought to make their magic work.
While faerie magic works well on plants and animals, it is unpredictable when applied to humans.

Giants.

They prefer living among their own kind, and they really dislike humans. They can grow very large. They are great magicians, with a special talent for illusion magic, and they are usually very smart and cunning. Giants live longer than humans.

Trolls.

Trolls are a subspecies of giants. They are slightly larger than humans. Some are hairy. They are very strong and due to their giant ancestry they might have illusion magic, or at least high resistance to it. Some like working with humans, others don't. Like giants, trolls have a longer life span than humans.
