Profile

Physically Appearance

  • Medium-length pale green hair
  • Green eyes
  • Tan skin
  • Very tall in height, but he doesn't usually stand upright
  • Physically fit with a well muscled build, but he doesn't hold himself with much confidence so he doesn't appear very imposing
  • Scar across bridge of nose beneath right eye
  • Purple markings beneath left eye
  • Numerous purple scars throughout body
  • 4 earrings per ear, 1 lower, 3 upper
  • Has 8 royal style dragonfly wings with a green and purple stained-glass appearance; although they appear cracked/broken, they are fully functional

Clothing Style

Randin tends to dress very simply and somewhat professionally for his job as a lab worker. He wears a plain green shirt under a white lab coat, the sleeves usually rolled up to his elbows. He also wears black fingerless gloves when not handling sensitive materials, or protective white gloves while working with such materials. His right arm is usually wrapped up in thermal bandages to protect his forearm from burns or cuts. He usually wears khakis with a belt around his waist and a belt attached to a small pouch around his right leg, which he tends to hold memos in to keep his schedule straight. He also wears protective black boots, the standard black tracking choker of the Enlightened, and a black headband. His earrings are all silver.

Personality

Randin is an intelligent man with incredible memory and problem solving skills, but he is also incredibly skittish and has trouble handling social interactions. From an outsider's view he comes off as jumpy and somewhat erratic, yet this is merely a result of having visions and hearing voices in his head frequently from some unknown outside force. This causes him to be almost-constantly overstimulated and paranoid about when the next sudden and shocking vision will force into his mind. These visions and voices are frequently shocking or horrific, so others may perceive that he screams or cries at seemingly nothing and goes into a panic for unknown reasons. Even without these factors interfering with his ability to think calmly and carefully, Randin is normally socially anxious and doesn't read social cues very well, so being around strangers makes him nervous. Other people tend to treat him differently since he often seems removed from the world around him, so this combination of factors makes it very difficult for Randin to function comfortably when around any kind of company, and even helpful and considerate people can stress him out if he's already in an uneasy state.

When calm, he's very quiet, gentle, and tends to distract himself with his own tasks, but the visions he has have been tormenting him for decades so he has trouble focusing and speaking even more. However when he can lock onto a specific task, it's almost impossible to distract him though, and he's very efficient and precise with whatever he puts his efforts into. Since he has trouble communicating with others in general, he has very few social skills. Even when in a rare state of calm, he has very little sense of how to act around other people. He gets very skittish around others if Jake is not with him, and he tends to retreat when stressed out too much. His social skills are even more problematic since he can only speak Dalindran fluently, and while he can understand others easily, he has little chance of conveying what he feels even if he can straighten out his thoughts long enough to speak.

Randin is incredibly clingy with his alter, Jake, but he is also very affectionate and loyal to him. When with Jake, he will rarely stray from him, usually clinging onto his arm, yet he is much more calm and can usually handle being around strangers better. Jake can usually soothe him into staying quiet if he starts to panic, and Randin finds much comfort in his alter's presence. Although Randin is known on the surface for being skittish and incomprehensible most of the time, he has odd moments of utter calm in certain dangerous situations. Whether or not it's his normal demeanor coming through when his visions and voices dissipate momentarily or if he involuntarily heightens his senses through adrenaline is uncertain. Whatever it may be, Randin becomes seemingly fearless at these times, although unlike his always fearless alter, Randin seems to face danger almost indifferently. Sometimes it seems like he might not understand the danger and is simply confused by it, but in actuality he just doesn't feel fear the same way other people do in the sense that although he registers the threat it may have to him, it doesn't particularly have much impact on his current mood or behavior. With him being the dominant alter, this is likely why Jake doesn't seem to flinch at dangerous situations. Randin is also easily underestimated since he's so jumpy and skittish most of the time, but he's actually just as strong and dangerous as Jake is, although Randin lacks the training and combat experience his alter does.

Abilities

  • Ayr rifting - rank 3/5
  • Reverb rifting - rank 4/5
  • Flight by wings, higher speeds and higher Reverb frequently the more of his 8 wings he's using, although he rarely flies
  • Can remove pairs of wings to use as weapons (upper pairs default to axes, lower pairs default to swords; combining multiple pairs improves the weapons but lowers or completely removes flight ability), although he rarely uses them
  • Wings can phase through solid objects while in motion
  • Can momentarily make his entire body phase through solid objects in conjunction with his wings
  • Can channel energy to and from his alter
  • Highly skilled at using various kinds of scientific equipment used in his workplace

Strengths

  • Has keen memory and can recite vast amounts of data with perfect accuracy
  • Meticulous, intelligent, highly focused on his tasks, and can make even complicated calculations quickly in his head
  • When around people he's comfortable with, he's very gentle, compassionate, and helpful
  • Completely fearless in times of peril or danger, so fear never interferes with his actions or decisions

Weaknesses

  • Mentally unstable/volatile and has a shaky grasp on reality when distracted by the visions/voices in his head
  • Doesn't understand social cues that well, skittish, and has trouble communicating with others
  • Timid, submissive, and highly dependent on his alter
  • The times when he can focus on a task, he tends to hyper-focus and ignores basically everything around him

Backstory

Randin grew up in Daldrian Fey with his mother, her alter, and his own alter, Jake. His father died after his alter, Jake's mother, died in childbirth. Randin appeared to be mentally volatile due to constantly hearing the thoughts of the Creator in his head, which was very stressful, overwhelming, and painful on his mind. He would often have sudden outbursts of panic or breakdowns and could rarely focus his own thoughts and form sentences for longer than a few seconds. He was teased and harassed by not only his peers but also the adults of the valley, mostly because he was incapable of communicating his problem to anyone due to both the anxiety it brought him and also because he was too young to even understand what was happening to him. By the time he could comprehend what he was hearing and seeing in his head, the long-term effects on his mind made it even more difficult for him to convey himself, since he never had much opportunity to build social skills or really talk to other people. Only Jake seemed to understand him due to their alter connection, so Randin grew very close to his only real source of comfort.

The night before Jake and Randin's 15th birthday, the dreaded Twilight of the Valley brought the mountain Ariac down on the village, and their remaining parents were killed in the attack. Although their friends, the Kalsel family, took them in, Randin and Jake fled from Daldrian Fey when Jake caught word that some other villagers considered Randin's uncontrollable outbursts and breakdowns were too much of an annoyance to tolerate any longer. When village members pursued them, the two left Dalindra and escaped into Daliarivon.

After traveling on their own for days, the two succumbed to exhaustion after Jake fended off a group of demons. Upon awakening, they found themselves captured and drafted by the Enlightened. Randin had a hard time adjusting to working for the Enlightened at first since he and Jake were assigned different job types, but he later found the lab work would help him focus and keep his thoughts in order. Although he was unable to communicate well with any of his colleagues outside of short bursts of data exchange, Randin proved to be a brilliant lab tech and a valuable asset to the Enlightened as long as he was given a safe and quiet workspace of his own.

Randin gained a high ranking in the T.Y.L. Faction as a lab tech, and as a result he was unexpectedly and rapidly promoted to lieutenant rank under his alter after every T.Y.L. member ranked higher than him and Jake was killed in numerous battles, Celarus accidents, and collateral weapon damage. Randin also unintentionally contributed to the death of the previous T.Y.L. General in a lab accident, but the incident was well covered up, and by the time anyone figured out what really happened no one really cared anymore since Jake and Randin performed better for the Faction than the previous leaders.

Randin continues his work as a vital lab tech and databaser, his condition with hearing the Creator unimproved in the slightest, although he at the very least has developed better methods to cope with the constant over-stimulation.

Trivia:

  • In his original rendition, Randin was much more coherent with his words and would scream wild things about the fall of the Enlightened and the deaths or misfortune of those around him when he got visions of them. He's much more incoherent and generally quieter than before even though he still has his outbursts.
  • Randin's favorite task to complete in the labs is making bombs. He's highly meticulous and can handle assembling them perfectly well, and he isn't affected by fear of the high-risk nature of the task nor being overconfident about his skills. It's just something to do, and he's very good at it and enjoys it.
    • Randin has absolutely no opinion on the use of these bombs. It doesn't really matter to him, and Jake uses a lot of explosives in his line of work, so Randin just considers the task as one way to be helpful to Jake.
  • Randin hates most kinds of glass. He doesn't work with any glass containers and he dislikes windows. By his logic, they might break at some point and be loud and sharp. He probably thinks this because it's common for the Reverb rifting of the Dalindrans of Daldrian Fey to shatter glass with the sound waves from their wing vibrations.
  • Since Randin's memory is so good, he doesn't need to look at manuals, formulas, or instructions again once he has properly read and processed the information and applied the knowledge at least once in practice.
  • The very first time he heard the voice of the Creator and had a vision, it involved someone familiar to him strangling someone else in an elevator before being stabbed in the chest. Since he was very young at the time, he does not remember it clearly enough to identify anyone specifically, and he didn't even know what an elevator was at the time he had the vision. The environment was too unfamiliar and foreign for him to understand it at the time.
    • Unfortunately he has realized that the environment is very similar to that of the Enlightened Celarus, so Randin is constantly paranoid about this vision occurring at some point, and he hates taking elevators because of it. He and Jake either take the stairs or fly when possible, and when necessary to take an elevator, he never goes without Jake.
  • Tends to chew on metallic objects when nervous, especially bullets. He's capable of biting right through them if he's too upset though. The taste of gunpowder is a little gross in his opinion, but it's apparently tolerable in his opinion. Jake really has to insist not to taste or eat gunpowder.
  • When asked to convey information, Randin tends to speak very quickly and spew out everything necessary as efficiently as possible so he can stop talking sooner. He’s not very good at enunciating, and he has a rather strong Dalindran accent when he attempts to speak in any other language he isn’t fluent in, so he is rather difficult to understand most of the time.
  • Loves potatoes.
  • Most people tend to assume he's insane, but you'd be "insane" too if all you heard all the time in your head was my stupid inner rambling about my stories.
  • It is a reoccurring event for people to forget that Randin is just as tall and physically fit as Jake; Randin just doesn’t show it off and has bad posture that makes him seem smaller than Jake.
    • Randin regularly goes with Jake to train in the gym facilities. He doesn’t fully spar like Jake since Randin dislikes fighting, but he does some training exercises with Jake just to make sure he’s capable of defending himself when needed. He prefers to use the weight lifting machines and just zone out while doing reps, since it’s a task for him to focus on and clear him jumbled thoughts with.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "A brilliant Dalindran driven to insanity by the voice of the Creator, he struggles to find any normalcy in his life while following his alter's lead in The Enlightened."
