Profile

Physical Appearance

  • Medium length black hair, usually spiked
  • Yellow slitted eyes
  • Fair skinned with a pale complexion
  • Medium/mildly short in height
  • Black markings under eyes
  • Usually wears eyeliner on top and bottom eyelids, which blend in with the tattoo markings under his eyes
  • Scar on left cheek (has stitches at the beginning of OTE before he has them removed when it heals)
  • Sharp fang-like canines and claw-like nails
  • Missing his right hand and has a prosthetic replacement
  • Missing his right leg from the knee down and has a prosthetic replacement
  • 9 piercings per ear; 5 upper, 4 lower
  • The edges/backs of his pointed ears have some mild amount of black/green scales on them
  • Black/green striped scaled tail with a light green underside (similar to a garter snake pattern)

Clothing Style

Dmitri wears a variant of the standard Enlightened uniform, his particular outfit being more unique to his personal style due to his high rank. Dmitri wears almost entirely black with a few green accents for the normal color scheme of their gear. He wears a black jacket over a dark green shirt, black pants, and black/dark green boots. He wears a number of black spiked belts around his hips, arms, and legs, and a spiked choker (and usually makes fun of himself for dressing like some wannabe goth). He typically wears a fingerless glove on his remaining hand, and his earrings tend to be black or silver.

His prosthetic hand is typically gray, silver, or black, but he often ends up breaking or losing it when he gets into close combat and has it replaced regularly. His prosthetic leg is usually a matching color, although it doesn't always match depending on how frequently he loses his hand. He loses his leg much less frequently, but he also tends to need replacements every once in a while when it gets beat up too badly.

Personality

Dmitri comes off as very low energy and rather gloomy, and it's mostly because he is low energy from overworking himself and stressing, and he is thoroughly pessimistic. However, he's describe himself as an optimistic pessimist, since he usually hopes that he's wrong when he expects the worst case scenario. Although he can seem rather deadpan and dreary all the time, he speaks with quite a bit of lighthearted wit and has a healthy sense of humor, although his humor is usually somewhat dry and tends to poke fun at his own misfortune. Dmitri has resigned to the fact that his life is rather terrible, but he makes the most of it and appreciates what positives he can sometimes get. He commonly remarks things along the lines of "I suppose things could be worse" or "Well, I'm not dead, so I guess things aren't that bad" since he typically tries to look on the bright side of things considering his life is pretty terrible in a lot of aspects. He doesn't take the good things in his life for granted of course, and he is very loyal and dedicated to the people he bonds with, making him a reliable ally.

Dmitri is a hard working and efficient member of the Enlightened, and he's been that way even before he became a general. He tries his best to complete all his assignments to the best of his ability, and he gets extremely nervous when he thinks he might be failing or disappointing his superiors or peers. He doesn't underestimate himself, but he doesn't find anything he does to be particularly remarkable. Like numerous other Enlightened members, Dmitri isn't particularly dedicated to the actual goals of the Enlightened and primarily works hard simply because he wants to live, and also because he doesn't want his apathy or lack of cooperation to cause the deaths of any of his colleagues or subordinates. He doesn't try to make excuses for the atrocious acts he may do on behalf of the Enlightened, and he honestly doesn't expect any forgiveness or pity for whatever misfortune or retribution that comes his way. He considers various members of the Enlightened to be his family, so he works hard for their sake rather than actually believing the goals of the organization.

He tends to sounds self depreciating since he constantly makes fun of himself, from his aesthetic to his life decisions. As much as people tell him to be nicer to himself, he usually just comments he's not young enough to be bothered by such petty insults like the emo teenager he apparently stole the wardrobe of. His logic is apparently he can't get depressed if he's already down on himself, but he's not nearly as dreary when around his more uplifting colleagues. Dmitri seems to fair better when he has someone more positive around him, and since he's very close with optimistic people like General Amando, Ista, and Rahmue, it's not hard for him to be in brighter spirits (and by brighter, I mean relatively neutral). His lighter nature and sense of humor tend to shine the most when he's with his daughter, Mira, since he doesn't want to be too much of a downer around her, but he's glad that his gloomy nature doesn't seem to be rubbing off on her yet.

Abilities

  • Lyfe rifting - rank 1/5, can mostly only create elemental charges to his bullets or something similar
  • Has very quick reflexes and often can react to things before he's consciously aware of them
  • Accelerated regeneration from demonic aura and can survive some injuries that would normally be fatal to mortals
  • Moderate demon strength and stamina
  • Skilled with firearms, particularly small handguns and rifles
  • Seems to have some other supernatural abilities he is unaware of…

Strengths

  • Hard working, reliable, and responsible
  • Loyal, compassionate, and easy to talk to
  • Resourceful, brave, and level-headed
  • Clever, down to earth, and adaptable

Weaknesses

  • A bit slow and low energy from exhaustion and stress
  • Pessimistic, self depreciating, and rarely accepts praise or takes it seriously
  • Demonic strength is only moderate, coupled with his small figure and prosthetics he's rather easy to overpower
  • Gets very nervous about failing or disappointing others and is flustered by intimacy

Backstory

Dmitri does not remember much of his early childhood, although he's aware he used to be in the Delzin system. According to the mortals that took him in, a group of Rytilian within Delzin smuggled Dmitri out when he was an infant through a traveling mercenary team and he was transported to safety. He grew up as the only Rytilian and the only demon in a town of mortals, yet he carried out a relatively normal life until his teenage years. One day the town was lit ablaze, although Dmitri has no idea how or why. He was unable to escape his house and was trapped when the flames caused the house to collapse. He remained pinned under the debris for days until he was discovered by the Enlightened and taken to the Celarus to be drafted. As far as he can tell, there were no other survivors in the town, and his parents are assumed dead.

Dmitri became a missionary in the D.Z.L. Faction rather quickly after he learned to use both firearms and close combat weaponry at an astonishing rate. He oddly also had such heightened reflexes he was capable of deflecting projectiles, even bullets, with his Plazma blade. He performed well in the majority of his assignments along with also working rather well with the other faction members. He became well liked among his peers for his loyalty to them as individuals and as a team, and over the years he worked his way up to Major, and then Lieutenant under General Zevernelt. Dmitri was loaded with an excess of work since General Zevernelt was purposely slowing faction efficiency for the resistance, and this started a long cycle of him being overworked and tired all the time. However with the help of General Amando he was able to manage things well until General Zevernelt deserted from the Enlightened along with many other D.Z.L. members, leaving the faction short staffed.

During the time shortly before Zevernelt was promoted to General, a ship crash landed on Venshirica and the D.Z.L. Faction was assigned to investigate and salvage anything useful from the wreckage. It was determined the vessel might have been from the distant galaxy of Lylaeterial from the small amount of vastly superior technology discovered. Dmitri managed to discover an undamaged pod inside the vessel buried in the debris. Inside was a cat girl named Mira, who confirmed their suspicions of where the ship came from. They ended up taking her back to the Celarus for studying and questioning, although she grew rather attached to Dmitri and was only receptive to his interactions with her. He learned her parents had placed her in the pod before the crash, and she was now orphaned and had no method of returning home. Dmitri decided to take her in and treated her as his own daughter.

Currently General Ilych is trying to keep the D.Z.L. Faction in running order following a devastating attack from the resistance that killed off many high ranked missionaries. He has now appointed a young but promising missionary, Rahmue Tasibai, to be his new Lieutenant, and they are both gradually settling into their new ranks while trying to keep up with the constant chaos of the job.

Trivia:

  • Dmitri's name comes from his adoptive mortal family, and he has no idea if he had a name before he was adopted. He tends to hear comments about how he doesn't have a very Rytilian-sounding name pretty regularly.
    • His last name, Ilych, is a slight change of spelling of Ilyich, which is the last name of Vladimir Lenin. Dmitri has nothing to do with Lenin and doesn't reference any of his life or theories; I just thought it sounded like a cool looking middle name, and I was working on either a high school English or History essay regarding Lenin at the same time I created Dmitri.
    • Dmitri's first name was picked because I wanted to match his Russian inspired last name, despite the fact that he is not Russian and his adoptive family shouldn't technically be Russian either (but I imagine they would have Russian names regardless). His name was inspired by the character from the animated Anastasia movie, since it was the only other Russian thing I could think of at the time, and I liked the name and the character in general.
  • There was a period of time when I used Dmitri very frequently in writing since I was working on Of The Enlightened a lot during high school. He was/is the protagonist of most of the scenarios presented in the story, and most of the original written parts of it were from his point of view.
  • Was originally 23 instead of 26 during his narrative. He also used to have red eyes and could shapeshift into a giant snake.
  • Dmitri is unaware of this, but the reason his reflexes are so quick is because he's host to a Rytilian minor deity that is essentially being an anonymous patron to him. This deity is capable of greatly heightening the senses of its mortal servant and will slow down or stop time around them when danger is near so they can better react to it. It is slightly less effective when slowing very large objects or creatures, but it is very effective at slowing things like small projectiles, which is why Dmitri is so skilled at dodging or deflecting things like bullets.
    • The group that smuggled him off of Rytikdrein used him as a mortal host to "contain" a handful of Rytilian minor deities that were attempting to hide from Delzin. Delzin has figured out a method to capture and kill Rytilian minor deities, so these deities essentially attached themselves to Dmitri when he was an infant in order to sneak off of Rytikdrein undetected.
    • Dmitri has no memory of the ritual involving the deities binding to him, and he's entirely unaware that they are still attached to him. They do offer him their blessings when they can to keep him alive, although their abilities are limited away from Rytikdrein.
  • He tends to drily joke that he's somehow both too young and too old for all the shit his job puts him through.
    • He also makes similar comments about not being old or mature enough to be a decent father for Mira, but he tries his best, and she certainly thinks he's doing a good job.
  • Mira refers to him as "papa" since she used to call her biological father "dad/daddy." She was old enough to remember her parents distinctly enough, but she considers Dmitri as just as much of a father as her real father.
    • He also very directly asks Dmitri pretty regularly when he's going to marry Ista, since she thinks she would be a perfect "mama." Ista finds it rather amusing and cute, and Dmitri used to be mildly embarrassed by it. Now he's mostly used to the question and usually just answers "I'm still not sure yet/I still don't know yet."
  • If asked why Dmitri dresses like a "wannabe-goth" as he describes it, he typically answers "Well, if I always look this gloomy, then I can't possibly get any more depressed than I already am, right?"
    • He has also cited that his impractical spiked accessories have saved him from being strangled/grappled effectively on multiple occasions, so he says the aesthetic has a functional purpose as well.
    • If you ask about the eyeliner, he'll say it's to distract from the real dark circles under his eyes along with how dead his eyes are in general.
  • Has almost stabbed himself in the eye with his spiked hair before. He remarks it is both a success and a failing of his aesthetic.
  • His hand was cut off by Neoka near the beginning of TToaH. His leg was ripped off by a mutated test subject from the labs who broke loose on the Celarus and almost dragged him out a window. On both instances, Garren was around to quickly whisk him away to medical aid, and Garren is mildly paranoid about Dmitri losing any other part of his body on his watch and tries even harder to keep an eye on him.
  • In the original version of Of The Enlightened, Dmitri was blackmailed into killing off a handful of his own Faction Missionaries in exchange for Rathian Demrile's life. Rahmue was caught up in this execution, which consisted of Dmitri firing a large Plazma cannon into a group of them attempting to recapture Gage and Xel.
    • Gage and Xel escaped this incident from their point of view in TToaH. From the point of view from OTE, basically all those missionaries were killed except for Rahmue, who was pulled out of the direct line of fire by Gage while trying to get out of the way.
    • Rahmue never learned the true nature of that incident and is under the impression that it was an accident or a terrible misfire. Dmitri intentionally kept an eye on him and treated him better out of guilt for having him involved in the incident at all.
    • I don't think this event is canon anymore, or at least if it is, only parts of it will be and it won't be under the same circumstances.
  • Dmitri doesn't typically smile much even when he's happy. He's just not that used to doing so in general, so it's not really a natural reaction for him.
  • He looks up to General Amando a great deal since he was the one who pulled Dmitri from the rubble of his destroyed home following the raid on his town. He also helped Dmitri a lot when the previous D.Z.L. Faction General was sabotaging the productivity of the faction, and he also served as a mentor of sorts since General Zevernelt was never helpful outside of field missions. Garren tends to look after Dmitri quite a bit and also is very willing to take care of Mira if Dmitri is particularly busy or just needs some time to de-stress.
  • His favorite color is, unsurprisingly, black.
  • Mira doesn't technically have her own bedroom since the Celarus isn't really designed with raising children in mind, so Dmitri has essentially renovated the large storage closet attached to his office and his own bedroom into a bedroom for her. The door connecting her room to Dmitri's office is usually locked, but the one connecting to his bedroom is always unlocked.
    • Mira commonly goes into his bedroom at night when she has nightmares, and Dmitri is always willing to let her sleep next to him so she can feel safer.
    • When Mira was a bit younger and too small to easily climb into Dmitri's bed on her own, he would either pick her up normally or she would sometimes get his attention by tugging on his tail if it was hanging off the side of the bed. Dmitri is capable of picking up Mira with his tail and would usually do this when he was too groggy to sit up and pick her up normally.
