Short description
Alfard, the only average human who had got a chance to become something more. This mysterious, gloomy man always used to search for a way to enter the spiritual world and be able to do things considered as supernatural, but after years... he can admit he just went too far. Getting drawn into deep world of darkness, Alfard had ruined his life with his own hands and has no longer wish to stay alive - but it's not that easy to end what he had started. Completely crazy, lovesick, destroyed man who despises human race - and especially himself. Young Alfard always looked for supernatural phenomenons, inspired by his parents, who used to be mediums, and he was incredibly excited when he finally summoned a devil that he made a pact with and sold his soul "as a test", but that was not enough for him. Soon after that, he had been found by spiritual creature imprisoned under the mountains, and agreed to become his Servant. Arevalte's goal was to gain more energy from the outside, to become stronger and develop into more "conscious" form. He gave Alfard his tools that he had created years ago and let him use them, but only to help him fulfilling his Mission. Quickly it turned out that this Mission seems to be endless and the goal is nearly impossible to be reached... and Alfard isn't really the best choice for a Servant. For the Servant it is forbidden to openly show any feelings toward other people, the Servant is forbidden to love anyone (and the rule wasn't even made by Arevalte himself, as Arevalte claims to be just a piece of some other higher creation). Both Arevalte and Alfard actually regret making their pact, but there is no way to end this. Alfard has unhealthy obsession over Taris since many years, but due to his contracts, he is not able to show any signs of affection or do anything in good intentions for other people. Yet the unfortunate man constantely keeps helping Taris without her knowledge, exposing himself to a punishment from his Master, or god knows what kind of a Supreme Being. Alfard hopelessly continues his Mission for over 20 years and it still seems to be impossible to resurrect and release Arevalte, but suddenly... there appears some glimpse of hope for the Master, as he accidentally gets empowered by other person, who was trying to prevent his expansion. The more bad things happen to Taris, the more Alfard also feels motivated to end his Mission and work for the Master. But what will really happen with the world when he'll finally release the Light Monster?

Personality + story

Alfard doesn't have tragic life. He is the tragedy. He is really unhappy with the decisions he made, but he knows that there is no hope for him and he doesn't even wish to end his suffering. He actually, in some way, enjoys his suffering. Alfard is a hopeless, overdramatic artist with a passion for pain and despises everything that is too trivial for him. This man doesn't live like other people tend to do. He is a lone soul who stucks in endless despair, getting more and more mad with every year. It is basically impossible to have a simple conversation with Alfard. He is just not there.

Young Alfard wasn't so crazy and depressed like he is now, but there was already something weird about him. Sad romantic soul, a poet, compositor, used to be a history student - at first sight he was just introverted guy who doesn't like people. But he was always interested in dark, suspicious things and used to think really bad about all the human kind. As a student, he was often abused by others, he always prefered to stay alone. Both of his parents died when he was 12 (spiritual seance gone bad) and after this incident he started to develop a strong interest in mystical things, like spirits, demons and death in general. He had no one to rely on as a teenager and it really had impact on his life. Alfard was really focused on dark topics and didn't wanted to take care of more earthbounded things, yet at least, he was quite ambitious, so he went to the university. He was always feeling a need to become more important for this world than average people - and that leaded him to tragedy. He wished for a true meeting with spiritual being and becoming closer with it. Also, he strongly believed that world is ruled by the powers that humanity doesn't know about - and he wanted to be the first one who discovers it by himself.

Alfard never had many friends, he claimed that he doesn't need any. But he actually has two kind of friends, who are really attached to him (not because they like him so much, they're forever connected to him). When he was at university, he met Silvester - they never liked each other until they get to know that they share some similar interests. They decided to escape from university and burned an antique shop where they were working sometimes. Later Alfard met Dimitri - it was when he was working in a jail as a security. Dimitri was a mad prisoner that Alfard released. Alfard never finished the university - he had more interesting things to do. He started to search for the proves that the world has its "spiritual" side and is watched by non-human beings. When he got a chance to meet with such a creature, of course he made an use of it. Firstly, he was able to evoke a demon (just a simple Devil that everyone knows about) - and just from curiosity, he made a pact with him. He sold his soul to the devil and got endless money (even though it wasn't his wish, it was more like a test for him) - and also he got assured that he will never be caught for his actions, no matter what he's gonna do. That was much more important to him... actually it became more important a few years later. Alfard became proud and started to despise humanity - but still wasn't completely satisfied, the devil couldn't fulfill his biggest wish. Alfard still was no more than a pity human.

It changed when he met Arevalte. It actually wasn't a being from different dimension, though Alfard had no idea about his origin. It was a "half-dead halcylian", a part of existence of very mighty halcylian (a man with the gift of the Light). After 20 years of living in depths of the mine, Arevalte wanted to get a servant  who could help to awake his "main part" and make him powerful, conscious, stable being again. He found Alfard and made a pact with him, thinking this man will be perfect for this task and won't break any rules set up by the unknown Supreme Being. Heartless, cold and being able to kill people with no regret. A perfect one.
Alfard was really excited about it - he felt like spiritual beings finally noticed him. He finally got a kind of own power (but it actually wasn't, it's all about Arevalte's splitted energy) - and became able to interfere in all structures of the world. He got two magical tools which he could use to collect people's vital energy (mostly by killing them or making them very weak) and to cursing everything he wants - one of them was so called Wheel of Misfortune, that turned out to have much more interesting features. But there was a rule that he couldn't break and this is the most important thing about his life. Arevalte wanted someone "heartless", as his Mission required killing other beings. Alfard can't do anything with good intensions for people he wants to care about. He is forbidden to love. When he firstly heard about these rules, he was like meh, I don't care, I don't have a heart after all, I hate people anyway. But after some years he understood it was a huge mistake because it turned that he's the biggest hopeless romantic ever. Then both of them, he and Arevalte, understood that the Mission seems to be endless and it's possible that Alfard won't accomplish it by the end of his lifetime. Arevalte needed terribly huge amounts of inner Energy. Seeing Alfard's misery, the Master started to regret that he employed him. Bu Alfard must continue it until he die. Unfortunately for him - it must be a natural death, he CAN'T kill himself, what is a true pity himself, because Alfard is extremely tired with his life. After 20 years of being Arevalte's Servant, he would love to commit a suicide and just go to hell, but he simply can't, he must live and search for right kinds of Energy and sometimes kill people. Arevalte claims he doesn't even care what his servant does and states that he personally wouldn't punish him (even though he despise him for being so weak). Who set these rules? Even Arevalte can't give clear answers. Or maybe he's forbidden to.
It happened for Alfard to kill for joy when he was young, before he met his Master, now he's doing it because he is forced to and hates it - but he still sees humanity as a pity rubbish. It goes exactly like this - Alfard uses his Wheel to took the Energy from alive beings and sometimes it just ends with their death. It's the only way to empower Arevalte, or at least, both of them used to thought like this for years. Alfard doesn't find killing fun anymore and avoids cruelty, the only person who he is cruel to is himself, as he constantely keeps doing self harm and take drugs - yet he is obliged to collect the Energy. But why, and what's the main reason of his suffering?

In 1878 Alfard and his two friends arrived to Hillade. He was already Arevalte's Servant and he was searching for source of specific Energy, halcylians' energy. He accidentally met young Amaralf's team and Taris. By falling in love with her, he made another huge mistake, probably the biggest one. It was endless, platonic love, that changed into unhealthy obsession. Alfard never gave her a sign that he feels something to her, he just let her be free, he knew he can't show her his feelings and didn't even want to get closer to her. Because he would get punished. They were completely different, but he couldn't stop think about her, and he always had some weird feeling that there's something really sad and threatening about her. In some way Alfard knew she had just committed her first murder, killing the evil ruffians' leader, Yngvar Reistad - even though he never talked with her about that. Alfard enjoyed that time in his own way, staying around Amaralf's team and silently admiring her, watching how her life changes, how she becomes closer with Adam - he got totally obsessed by her.
And is obsessed in the same way until now, after almost 20 years. Though it actually changed a bit, changed into something even more sick, because currently he doesn't see a human being in Taris, she is his sinless goddess now and he wants her to be completely pure and free. It's still platonic and he wouldn't even want to touch her, yet she's still the most important thing in his life. She is his biggest sin. It's really problematic for his Master - but he can't do anything with it. He keeps writing dramatic poems about her and still idealises her. He would rather burn in the hell than suffer from this pitiful love.

Quickly Alfard met Taris, in the same year, he saved her from being accused for committing a crime. Taris really killed a man, second one in her life, trying to protect Adam  - but Alfard didn't let people know about it and punish her. He used his Wheel to change something in this world - he erased this fact from all people's mind. The Wheel could not only kill people and transfer the Energy to the Master, but also cast curses and infecting people's minds on a massive scale. So yes, it works like this - after Alfard's interfering, no one remember about Taris' second crime. Alfard always wanted Taris to be pure and protect her at any cost, as he was aware that she came through hell in her life. Of course he got punished by his Master for using his tool in wrong way - but he still must have given him a chance.
Unfortunately it wasn't last time when Alfard helped Taris (without her knowledge). He did literally the same thing after Taris killed Katarina in 1891, trying to protect her newborn daughter - Alfard's action wasn't even necessary, no one would have discovered about this, yet he couldn't stop himself. He got even more punishment from Arevalte and his life became completely awful. In that moment Alfard already had his... own child.

After Taris got married, Alfard went totally mad and ran away from Hillade for many years - in this time he was doing worst things you can imagine. It's the fact that he raped a woman and later had a daughter with her. He killed this woman, also wanted to kill the child, but his friends stopped him. But he changed and after some years he started to care about this girl. Honestly it would be better for him if he wasn't. Alfard came back for Talvi Irisa and started to develop love to her, even though he couldn't show it in any way. Talvi  now travels with Alfard, Dimitri and Silvester and is a part of their misery, an element of the whole curse. Talvi is just infected with the whole tragedy. If Alfard will ever break the rules of the contract again, Talvi will simply die. If Alfard will kill himself, the role of the Servant will be "inherited" by his daughter. It seems like it will never end. Now he is torned between love to his own child and love to Taris. Because he had never stopped loving Taris in his own way - and will never let her soul get "dirty". Of course, Alfard is not aware that by using his Wheel on her, he actually torns her soul more and more.

When Taris gets accused for a crime that she had never committed, Adam, who is aware that Alfard has done something mysterious for Taris years ago, dares to ask him for help. He doesn't know about the second time, so he thinks Alfard protected Taris only in 1878 (yet he doesn't know how). Alfard's biggest dilemma starts in that moment. Arevalte stated that if he'll ever use the Wheel for Taris' intentions again, Talvi Irisa might die. He warned Alfard... but he still can't get over Taris, as Adam had awakened his strongest feelings again. And Taris' situation seems to get worse with every day, as the halcylians from Braivada now accuse her for another TWO crimes, trying to use her as a tool in their rebellion. Moreover, she is driven to such madness that she REALLY kills a man again. When Alfard sinks in his biggest despair, suddenly the voice of Arevalte in his head speaks to him, pointing that if their bond will ever get broken, then maybe he could use the Wheel for anything without any consequences.
In late 1897 Alfard finally gets his motivation to accomplish his Mission, because now it seems to be... possible. Arevalte, imprisoned deep in the undergrounds, surprisingly got empowered by the massive alhilamps, inventions that Amaralf sent there in order to attack him and get rid of him. Amaralf accidentally gave Arevalte huge amounts of Energy to consume, making a mistake that he will never stop regretting. Arevalte got a boost that made his regeneration process much faster... and now Alfard's task became much easier. Alfard has to collect the final Energy. He does everything to finish it on time, never thinking about what the releasing of Arevalte will bring the world - the only thing important to him is Taris. He wants to save her, but at the same time, not expose Talvi to the risk of death. After killing around 80 people with the Wheel, the process ends.
On the last day of 1897, Alfard's Mission is technically finished, and he needs no Servant anymore. Alfard uses the Wheel and no one remembers about Taris' crimes, the ones she committed and the ones she didn't. But in fact... the bond between the Master and the Servant... still exists. And it has an impact on Talvi, whose health seems to get worse and worse with every next month.
Soon after that Alfard starts to understand that he, in fact, couldn't save anyone. The only things he wanted was to let Taris live in peace and save Talvi from his own fate.

Relations

Taris - Alfard's biggest obsession, his goddess and the thing that destroyed his life. In the past they used to be acquaintances, not even close friends - now she doesn't even know what happened to him, as he disappeared from her life about 15 years ago. She has no idea how much he sacrificed for her. She also doesn't know about his huge obsession and about that she is stalked by him since many years. Alfard is the reason WHY no one remembers about 3 of all the 4 crimes she committed. He and his magical Wheel which he isn't allowed to use for any people's matters. He pays horribly high price for protecting her, "erasing her sins from this dimension", yet Taris has no idea about it (until Talvi pays her a visit and gives her some hint about it). After Taris discovers the truth about Alfard's actions, she is absolutely broken and doesn't even know how to feel about this. She tries to find Alfard and meet him for the first time after these 15 years. She doesn't think she deserved for making her "innocent", even though she doesn't really regret her crimes. The awareness about Alfard's sacrifice changes her life a lot. She knows that she should try to enjoy the chances she got, but it's not that easy, especially that the fate is still very cruel to her.
Taris never discovered how many people have died because of Alfard and his Mission.

Talvi - his daughter. She has no idea about his real feelings to her and thinks he doesn't care about her, because he treats her very harshly and doesn't speak to her. Talvi would love to hear a single word from him, unfortunately he can't communicate with her due to his contract with Master. If he'll do that, she may die. They communicate by writing messages. Even though - she accepts it and doesn't blame him for anything. She even knows that he's a murderer, but doesn't think about him as a cruel monster, she has a very disturbed image of him and tends to idealize him in her own way. She's very curious about him and his story and would like to know more about him and his relations with people of Hillade. Secretly feel pity for him and even feels bad about his love to Taris, thinking that he deserves to be at least appreciated by her. When she starts to understand what is the real reason of Alfard's despair and realizes that is was not just because of one-sided love, her own feelings become even more twisted, but she never develops a hatred - neither towards Alfard, Taris or even Arevalte. Talvi sometimes might be quite afraid of her father, but knows that he won't hurt her and she always has a feeling that she can't completely leave him... While Alfard is aware that the best for Talvi would be just finally disappear from his life. And at some point he just wishes that he could let her go. Talvi, despite being aware of that her father used to kill people for his Mission, never sees her father as a horrible and cruel person.

Silvester, Dimitri - his mates who helps him with the Mission, bonded with him by the part of Arevalte's pact. He has no specific feelings for them and he doesn't even treat them very friendly now, but they're always with him, even if they don't really want it anymore. He met Silvester at the university and Dimitri in the jail where he was working as a security. In the past their bond seemed to be better and quite deeper. They won't leave him, no matter what, they basically don't have their own lives - and it's also because of the Arevalte's curse. They got involved into this without their agreement, so they always travel with him and also take care of Talvi, but they know absolutely nothing about raising a child. They seem to hate their own lives as well.

Adam - For Adam, Alfard was an element of the past and he really didn't expect him to have some impact on their current life. Alfard had arrived to Hillade in 1878 and Amaralf's team used to wander around with him, fascinated by his mysterious nature and his magical Wheel, a weird artifact that allowed transfering the energy from alive beings and cast real curses. They had rather friendly relations (maybe friendly is too strong word, as it's not really possible to become friends with someone like Alfard), but they had some adventures together, they even played music together. Adam was aware of Alfard's hopeless crush on Taris, but never treated it seriously, thinking this man is just pitiful and needs to visit a nuthouse. Young Adam wasn't really jealous of him, especially that Taris didn't seem to be interested in Alfard as well. The whole group didn't understand WHAT'S the true reason of Alfard's misery, neither WHAT really his Mission is. Although Alfard was madly obsessed with Taris, he knew that it is forbidden for him to love someone, so he wasn't couraged enough even to touch her. She became somewhat a goddess for him and she wasn't just a romantic interest for him. Alfard states that he never felt envy about Adam and has no desire to revenge on him, he calls him a lame simpleton unworthy of Taris' grace, but accepts him as her husband and actually is glad she has someone who cares for her that much. Of course Adam doesn't approve his huge obsession and finds him really weird and worrisome - but he doesn't know any truth about him and his contracts. It changes when they meet after many, many years, when Adam is so worried about Taris' situation that he decides to ask Alfard for help. He knows that he helped her in the past, but doesn't really know how. In this moment he gets all informations about Alfard's life, but he's obligated to not tell it anyone. Adam becomes aware of WHAT Alfard has done in order to save Taris from being punished for her crimes in 1878 and 1891. In the second case, the "curse" was that strong that even Adam's memory of Taris' crime completely disappeared, so he doesn't remember that Taris killed Katarina who wanted to kidnap baby Alva. It's a complete shock for him when he starts to understand the WHOLE situation. Alfard helped some kind of a monster to ressurect just to be able to save Taris again - and to not lose his own daughter either. He thinks it's better to not inform Taris about everything, but she knows enough to have her own vision on this. Actually Adam feels pity for Alfard, but is thankful to him. Yes, he used to laugh at his pathetic behaviors, his heavy obsession over Taris and becoming that mad, but now... now he literally slowly turns to Alfard 2.0.

Other info

- He's one of these lucky characters who had very good parents and never got hurt by them, unfortunately they both died when he was 12; his mother died because she got possessed by a mysterious spirit at spiritual seanse and some days later his father committed suicide because of that.
- He got two magical tools, not only the Wheel, but also some kind of changeable weapon. The most important part of the Wheel is the golden disc in the middle which Arevalte has always carried with him in the past. Actually, there exists the second Wheel, made by Alfard himself from the parts of old Arevalte's inventions. The Wheel also can kill, but it's not directly connected to Arevalte. It belongs to Rigel Hegermann, the man from the sect that young Alfard used to belong to (this topic needs to be expanded)
- Actually the rules of the Arevalte's contract aren't made up by Arevalte himself. Arevalte...also has his own Master. Even though no one believes it. While it is never stated in the story WHO the Mastermind could be, the second novel might give an answer to that. It is actually The Time Constructor, who "wrote" Arevalte on the right timeline.
- He's strongly addicted to laudanum.
- Alfard was the one who found Adrianna and carried her to her mother after Alisa kidnapped her (though Taris NEVER discovered it). No one knows how he found her (or why he didn't kill Alisa who clearly deserved it).
- He's really skinny and has a lot of scars.
- When they were young, he, Dimitri and Silvester used to have a goat named Maestro. The goat eventually ended up as a sacrifice for the demons when they tried to organize a black mass with Amaralf's team (it really didn't go right). Taris still keeps Maestro's horns as a kind of family heirloom, showing that she has some sentiment for these days.
- In the childhood he was a very good student, but other kids disliked him and abused him quite often.
- I highly associate him with the Danse Macabre song.
- *BIG SPOILER* Alfard finally commits suicide on 20th May 1898, after he discovers that Taris is accused for another thing, but most importantly, he just wants to save Talvi, who seems to be slowly dying. The almost inactive bond with Arevalte will be now her thing, but at least, she won't die - her life must be continued, since the bond still exists. Talvi is now the Servant, but she doesn't have to serve Arevalte in any way, as Alfard already accomplished the Mission; the bond lasts only because Arevalte needs time to regenerate completely (Arevalte can still speak to her though, but he even motivates her to find a way to end this). Alfard found a way to end the curse being a consequence of his sins, so Talvi can live quite peacefully at last. After this moment she gets adopted by the Froilands.
