Appearance

Fair-haired with round, green eyes, and thin eyebrows where the left one has a scar that slashes through it, Pierce is a fine enough looking man despite always looking a tired and a little worse for wear, the type of person to get 'you'd clean up nice' comments on the regular. His flat speaking voice only adds to the aura of resignation to permanent exhaustion that seems to surround him. He wears round frame glasses that he can hardly see without and walks with a noticable limp, that gets more pronounced during cold weather. He has a chip in front teeth due to a stupid accident involving his brother and cousins. Pierce’s hands littered with scars that he brushes off any questions about with the explanation that he was a less than careful child.

His clothes are older, but still in good condition. Pierce sticks to muted colours, never anything garish or stand out, just plain and simple. He much rather be ignored than noticed.

Personality

Well-spoken, Pierce is able to articulate his thoughts and ideas well. Albeit, a bit prone to tangents, especially on topics he knows a lot about, and can be rather boring if you don't care about the works of niche authors. His demeanor borders on dour, a constant undertone of him being a hardcore pessimist. The few people he regularly interacts with consider him to be be dependable and consistent, but a loner. Pierce sticks to his word. He makes plans and follows them through, not cutting any corners as he insists on doing things right. He's not against help if he truly needs it, but he prefers to work alone and be left alone.

Pierce is riddled with guilt as he feels like he was presented with a life full of opportunities but burned out before ever really getting started on anything worth while. Pierce struggles with severe depression that manifests as a numb detachment that suddenly swings to crushing self-hatred. He has energy to do things, but no want for self preservation or betterment. A life of just going through the motions without any substance. He wishes well for others, but purposefully tries to keep himself distant. To him, it's unfair to get people attached to him as he firmly believes that he will inevitable succeed in killing himself.

Even if he tells himself he's not close to others, he still is. Pierce does small gestures of friendship for the people that he likes, but lies about why he's doing it. He bought it on accident. He needed to walk this direction anyway. He didn't have plans later. A whole pile of lies on why he's being nice, just so he can avoid admitting he has people who care about him, and he cares about in return.

History

TL;DR: The archivist Pierce Verduaux never went by the name Ennis Kinkaid, never was hospitalized and accidentally released, nor did he ever steal $20 from his parents in order to move across country (sorry, Mom and Dad).

Relationships

Walter Kinkaid

Older Brother (deceased)

His death remains a haunting presence in his life.

He originally met Morgan because of a case that the man was working, and Morgan happened to catch on that he was lying about his name. As much as Pierce is hesitant to get close to others, it's nice to have someone he can be open about his life with. It might not be that smart to be spilling his guts to a two-bit PI, but Morgan actually listens and at least seems to care in his own odd way.
