About

Being a classic example of “well, their heart is in the right place”, Ken is not an individual most people like when first meeting him. He’s remarkably grumpy and has a very pessimistic outlook on most things, always finding a way to say something that will generally bog down anyone’s good mood. He has also gotten quite good at finding a way to spin anything in a negative light. On top of this, Ken absolutely struggles with some very heated anger issues. It doesn’t take much for him to snap in any capacity, and he can lose his temper so much that he might shout some truly upsetting things at anyone, even people he loves. Adding to his heat, Ken is likewise fiery and stubborn as they come. He has good morals deep down underneath all the anger, and always believes a lot in doing the right thing. His morals, however, are completely dictated by himself, and he will absolutely defend and fight for his beliefs before he ever considers changing them. It can absolutely be said that he’s not a very good listener for this reason. He has quite the tendency to be a human bulldozer and do things without anyone involved’s input. As he cares a lot about justice, Ken’s incredibly passionate about protecting others, especially people who can not stand up and fight for themselves. However, his tendency to speak over people, coupled with his aforementioned passion, often leads to him jumping to heroically defend people who are not asking to be rescued. Though he’s protective of people, Ken has never once considered himself a hero, and is thankfully more humble about this than he is about his appearances. Ken does, unfortunately, like to think of himself as very virtuous and righteous in what he does. He’s very vehement about rejecting anything evil and doing what he can to snuff it out. Ken’s other obsessions and passions tend to revolve around mortality as well. It’s a little hard to not be so focused on death when you know how and when you’re going to die.

Entirely believing that his only purpose is to smite demons, Ken’s very focused on what he does and keeping up with it, as he’s passionate about it. Truthfully, he’s not doing it out of any love for the craft, in fact he quite hates having to take up a sword and use it in a matter to hurt something. He’s actually entirely doing what he does out of a love for the people that it protects instead. Ken’s incredibly softhearted in this sense, though that’s a trait that’s certainly buried very deep under all his angst.

History
Mirror

Before Ken was to even be born, his parents knew what would become of him. They decided to bring him into the world in spite of knowing this, too. Ken was born into one of the major jailer hunting families, the fathers of his family passing down the tradition to their sons for literal centuries. However, the secrets of demon hunting are not the only thing that is passed from generation to generation. Stemming from a selfish curse a prior Fleischer agreed upon, each son of the family line is set to take on a specific curse that manifests in the form of a demonic parasitic creature. It’s somewhat of a give and take situation, as the parasite grants the host a distinct ability to summon weapons with a level of psychic control over their own blood. There are other smaller benefits, but the parasitic creature that brings these upsides is still a parasite, and does drain the host of their blood. The hosts of this creature don’t actually live that long, as they’re quick to start really suffering the effects of such a thing early and are known to promptly die at thirty. No Fleischer before Ken has ever made it to thirty-one. For most of his upbringing, Ken had to pretty much watch his father decay under the parasite’s grip, knowing that he is essentially gazing into a mirror.
Heart

With his father’s eventual passing, Ken was to finally take on the curse. Needless to say, it did quite a bit of damage to his overall motivation and mental health. It’s very hard to avoid stooping to nihilistic ideals when you’re constantly aware of when and how you’re going to die. Ken’s early experiences with jailers would not just stop and end with this little familial curse, however. At the time, Ken was living with the only surviving member of his family, that being his mother. His mother had grown increasingly distant from the family around the time that Ken’s father was pretty much set to die. This is entirely because her experience within this tradition that she was married into caused her to have somewhat of a change of heart. Seeing people she’s supposed to love slaughtering jailers, these poor little beings that looked so afraid every time they were held under the blade really upset her. Her pity turned her into one of those very beasts herself.

Coma

Unfortunately for Ken, it’s probably not a good idea to be around someone who is undergoing transmogrification into a jailer. This is mainly because most jailers are larger than buildings, so one can imagine. In an understandable amount of panic, Ken did actually try to aid his mother through what he at first thought was a sudden bout of illness. This only put him in danger, as his mother would become a snake-like beast of absolutely massive size. Flailing in what is mostly pain, the now jagged and heavily spiked body of this jailer did, of course, absolutely destroy Ken with a swift whack. Some of the larger spikes even impaled Ken in certain places, including his right eye. This brand new jailer would eventually flee, leaving Ken pretty much mangled. Though unfortunate, this event was what finally smacked a sense of caring about things into Ken. He felt miserable, but his injuries didn’t keep him down for long, as he knew what he needed to do. He needed to find his mother and put an end to the curse that is his family.

Trivia
  • Having a symbiotic relationship with Bailiff for the most part, Ken's able to do a number of weird things thanks to this parasite. He can split in half to reveal the parasite's jaws anywhere on his body, he can be dismembered, and can even explode and survive. His blood is more akin to a very sticky ooze that holds his body parts together, and this ooze has a mind of its own as it's actually Bailiff. This ooze will retrieve his body parts and put him back together, or stop them from being torn off entirely. His most notable ability is having a telepathic control over his own blood, being able to summon weapons of hardened blood and organs from out of open wounds. Losing an eye has given him an easy way to summon said weapons.
  • There are some downsides to the parasite other than dying at a premature age from extreme blood loss, though. Ken can self induce hypovolemia if he uses too much blood to summon something, so he needs to be careful. He also has an arrhythmia of the heart, specifically supraventricular tachycardia.
  • Ken's understanding of English isn't actually that great. He sometimes needs Parsley and Perci's help with understanding some words. He's better with writing than speaking.
  • As a big fan of rats, Ken actually has two rats of his own! They're named Seraph and Cherub and he is obsessed with them. He really likes decorating large, nice, and pretty enclosures for them.
  • Funnily enough, Ken has been to anger management in recent years. He doesn't do so good.
  • After the events of the storyline, Ken pretty much settles down to just make swords and art for others while still upkeeping the strain rights thing he started. He also has a large rose garden he tends to very frequently.
