A young prince of the Forest of Endless Night, Jonathan was born into the fairy realm and chosen as a prince by his extraordinary affinity with animals. Though kinder and more reliable than many of his fellow fairies, Jonathan is just as fond of mischief and trickery as the rest of his kin is.

He’s one of the first fairies to become aware of the human wandering among them in the forest, and becomes a great comfort and companion to the homesick boy tricked into staying in their realm. As their feelings start growing stronger, however, the other fairies also become increasingly aware of the human among them, and the delicious heart he has.

To save his life, Jonathan gives Claude two options: to return back to the realm of humans but to leave his gift of music behind, or to cast off his human skin and become part of the fairy realm, with the rules of humans no longer binding him and his heart no longer sought after. For Claude, whose feelings towards the prince had grown beyond simple friendship, the choice was an easy one, and his body changed to better suit the world he now was part of.

As the one who turned Claude as well as his now partner, Jonathan would do his best to make him feel comfortable in his new home: he would make a place for them to live in a hollow tree, and whatever Claude asked Jonathan made sure to give him.

• He can talk to animals and is likewise very liked by them.
  
  
• He never causes harm to animals even when pulling pranks on humans: rather than braiding horse manes with elf locks or tying cow tails together, he braids manes nicely and ties golden ribbons on cows’ tails, especially if their owner is humble and kind.
  
  
• Prince is not a hereditary title, but instead based entirely on chance and luck. Jonathan became the prince of the Forest of Eternal Night due to being adored by the forest animals since birth, which the ruling couple saw as a good sign. He will one day become a king of the forest, but it might take a few decades for his time to come - fairies live rather long, after all
  
  
• As a fairy his illusion and transformation skills are extremely strong: he can create illusions humans can directly interact with, and he can physically (though usually only temporarily) change their appearance as well. He can turn sticks into snakes, make people believe they’re surrounded by monsters and give them donkey ears as he pleases. He also supplies Claude with the magic he can’t access as a non-fairy
  
  
• Nature usually yields to his commands: flowers will wilt and bloom to his will, and trees will move their branches if he so wishes.
