Jack grew up with his mother, who struggled with work and her own health and frequently fell into periods of depression. His mother idolized him as "the only good thing" she had, leading to her objectifying Jack and holding him to absolutely unreasonable expectations and standards for how he should act and treat her. Because of his mother, Jack ended up developing the habit of repressing any negative emotion so she would be content with him.
Whenever he tried to bring up his own problems, his mother quickly dismissed them and/or guilted him for feeling bad, and then went on about how her life was worse and how he was letting her down as an extra blow. Jack faced a bit of bullying at school from his peers, but refused to speak up or fight back because of this. One day, while being harassed by his peers, he fell into a rift, which lead him to meet other teens like him, who were tasked to stop a man called The Spy from setting off an event that could end the universe as they know it. Jack is a very optimistic and carefree boy. He has a huge heart and makes sure that everyone around him is happy or at least assured that everything will be alright. He tries to be positive, even in the face of something depressing, and refuses to let himself be sad.
He fears being abandoned by those he loves, and the only way he knows how to keep people around him is by pretending to always being happy (even when he isn't). He represses most negative emotions or at least tries not to show them around others.
Eventually, his friends catch on and teach him that it is alright to feel bad sometimes, and that his emotions are just as valid as other peoples are. Mia is mainly the one who lets him express himself the most, which allows them to grow closer than before.

Mia is very special to Jack. She allows him to express himself around her and he feels safe when she's around. They started off as friends, but Jack soon realized they were in love with Mia, so they got together.
