"You're not living in this world alone."

After moving away from home due to a fall out with her parents after turning 20 years old, Goodbye, Dear Sorrows tells of 25-year-old Mari Oshiro five years after separating herself from the individuals she previously considered family. Once characterized by having a passion for art, Mari lands herself a job in a law enforcement firm in her hometown Musashino, Tokyo shortly after dropping out of university. Although she has lived in Musashino all her life, the city remains unfamiliar to her as if she were a foreigner.

By turning a new leaf and starting a job in a detective agency, Mari unexpectedly finds herself creating a familial bond between both new and old faces; including the mellow yet charming Katoru "Kagi" Miyake, the enigmatic and reserved Kouga Yusuimaru, and the pleasant return of her doting older sister, Akiko Oshiro

However, she finds herself troubled due to a number of circumstances. Mari's work history only contains odd jobs and drawing doujinshi; not once has she worked in law enforcement or any public service for that matter. Secondly, shortly after getting familiar with her new co-workers, Mari finds herself developing a crush on Yusuimaru. Mari's previous relationship found itself coming to an abrupt end due to her girlfriend being a year her senior and graduating when she attended high school and fears that perusing a relationship further with her new co-worker would be destined to follow suit.
