Bulwarks are sorcerers employed by the kingdom to exterminate abominations—harrowing creatures that terrorize the country of Sylvaca. Abominations are mainly seen on the outskirts of towns, emerging from the dense forest that stretches across the island. Mai Kallikos was a town bulwark until an unfortunate accident, causing their magic to become erratic and unstable. Not long after, they were transferred to Corundum City, a place where all the deadbeat bulwarks are stationed. Corundum City is a peaceful city free of abominations, with only a few stray ones breaking in every year or so. Mai, humiliated by their inability to control magic, turns into a reserved veteran soldier who keeps to themself. Their peers and co-workers see Mai as a burden on all the other hardworking bulwarks. However, when strange incidents start to occur in Corundum City, things begin to change. Bulwarks suddenly begin to mysteriously vanish or appear dead in the morning while abomination cases skyrocket. Hemomancers, illegal blood sorcerers, are thought to be behind these strange occurrences. Tired of sitting on the sidelines, Mai sees this as a chance to finally redeem themselves and reclaim their former glory.
