I def get that, tbh half of why I wondered about a recommended reading is sometimes it's tricky and overwhelming just knowing where to start? Ngl I put off digging deeper into researching the Lancaster bit of my WW2 plot for so long because of that but I do think a media recs and suggested reading would be best and most effective as a collaborative effort.
A suggestions channel is def a good shout. I'm interested in a rewards system but I'm not sure what to offer? I need to get back into discord and see how other people do rewards for that kind of thing, if they utilize such a system then go from there. That and now there's a base idea in place for the server I'm looking to actually start making it soon.
Rape/necrophilia will def be going on the not allowed list, thanks for reminding me of that. In regards to the strange/hygiene related kinks I had thought about not allowing them (I know I would not feel comfortable in a server that allowed those kinds of things) but hadn't got as far as adding it into the ruleset. How about this amendment to the NSFW rule?
3) NSFW is allowed but the parties involved MUST be over the age of 18. NSFW work must be kept into the appropriate channel. Content depicting pedophilia, rape, incest, necrophilia, diapers/scat, watersport, vomit play, vore, inflation/fat fetish, stomp/snuff that's about all I can think of for extreme strange/hygiene fetishes that might make folk uncomfortable? If I'm missing some that really need to be noted feel free to give me a nudge are not allowed within the server. Art depicting BDSM is allowed but should be placed under a spoiler and warned for as appropriate.
As for violence and sensitive content, how about this for an additional rule?

Yeah that's totally fair, I think it'd be a good idea to include it in there for people. The only real worry I suppose is how it'd show up on the server but it might be wise to just have suggested reading channels for each era if that wasn't a plan already. I'm not sure how it could be done otherwise without a third-party site like a Google Doc, or some serious organising; the former would be way easier for people to find what they want.
If it's OC-centric I think art and writing would be enough to give people a taste to contribute tbh that's usually enough without bringing money into it. The servers I'm on atm do little contests like the Hunger Games simulator in between actual prompts and always reward art to the winning character, for example. I suppose another idea might be some sort of points system, which might be especially effective with prompts, and tallying the count at the end of a certain period (a week, a month, etc.) and rewarding the character with the most points or awarding characters who have been particularly active/developed/entered for prompts. I don't know how effective that'd be in itself so it's probably not worth doing but I've seen that be done once or twice to encourage teamplay between people

I'll def consider the idea, it sounds like I'm being difficult and resisting the suggestion but I am reluctant to put art/writing rewards in place just yet purely because I am planning to go to uni next year and idk how much that'll affect my activity and energy levels for drawing, especially since it is a largely practical course. I think the best thing would be to see how things go then go from there! That does sound interesting so I will look into doing something like that. Would probably be best to wait until there's more members before putting on an event like that.
I decided to split BDSM and kinks that are allowed into it's separate channel away from the general NSFW channel. Both are agelocked channels that (hopefully) you'd have to ask to opt-in/opt out as I've seen another channel do. I've also put a note in the NSFW rule that by asking for kinky-nsfw category means you consent to seeing BDSM related content.
I've also broken the server down into categories so we have:
general which covers rules, intro, general chat, fandom, suggestions/feedback and help center.
Art share, broken down by periods. Also includes a section for sharing OC profiles, sharing stories/fic snippets sharing WIP's and sketches, story related stuff and requests for feedback.
Resource and media recs, again broken down by periods + channel to ask for help writing historical fiction OC's.

I can see how it might be a bit of a chore when the community is small (getting to show off OCs and one's own art/writing/etc. is motivation enough to do prompts anyway tbh), especially if you're busy yourself. Could be worth noting for later and seeing if you can take some sort of poll on it from the people in the server when it busies up.
Nice, that's a good idea! the layout you have for the channels sounds good, though tbh I'm somewhat confused by how the periods are laid out, but then I think that we would have had different visions for how it might work. I suppose it'd be easier to make sense of to see it, it sounds fantastic overall though and can't think of anything that would need adding or removing without other third-party feedback

afaik the only/easiest way to do that would be by creating a role specifically for the nsfw channel and restricting access to everyone from posting/reading in it; there's a post here that explains how to do it if this helps you figure it out (presuming you haven't yet but I apologise if you have)
