prompt one: a spark among dry grass

It’s a cold and clear winter morning, and your character finds themselves in the small village of Sommerang, about a day’s brisk walk north of Faline.

Sommerang might be small, but it is prosperous: dotted around it, on rolling hills and fields edged by neatly stacked stone walls, are some of Ivras’ finest silkberry orchards. In summer and early autumn, the lattices and trellises that line the fields are all overgrown by the vines, but in winter, they lay bare, with only a tangle of dead-looking shrubbery at their feet.

As your character passes by one of the farmsteads, there is a strange, unpleasant smell on the wind. It seems to come from beyond one of the barns, and as your character watches, suddenly bright flames burst forth and begin to lick the roof, and black smoke accompanies them.

There are shouts of FIRE! and suddenly the whole village seems awash with activity. Save the barn!

Everyone’s attention is caught by the fire, but as the strange smell comes back, stronger this time, your character turns to look out towards the fields—and there, something is happening. Another fire, despite there being nothing but fallow fields to burn. From the flames, something seems to rise…

Does your character stay to help with putting out the barn fire, or do they investigate the second blaze?

prompt two: blazing north

As the villagers and the handful of visitors unite their forces, the barn fire is slowly getting under control—there is a line of helpers passing buckets of water from the well to douse the fire with, and many helping hands.

The same can’t be said for the blazing pyre that has erupted out on the silkberry field. It’s clear now that it’s not just a wildfire, it’s a monster, though it’s hard to see through the flames and the air shimmering with intense heat. As the great black skeleton rises upwards, a hush falls over Sommerang, everyone holding their breath. Will it turn its wrath on the rest of the village?

…But no. The beast doesn’t even look at the houses and storage sheds; it slowly begins to move north, away from the village.

Everyone breathes a sigh of relief, but danger isn’t over yet. The ground in the monster’s wake is charred and smoldering, and the wind has picked up, further fanning the flames and hastening the Pyre’s passage northwards.

Does your character stay to help, or do they hurry onwards to warn whoever might be in the monster’s path?

prompt three: a race against time

By now, the Pyre has left Sommerang behind. The blaze has diminished slightly, though whether it is because of it is weakening, or because of a lack of things to burn, is not yet known. Some witnesses report larger and more numerous puddles of ichor left in its wake. The village is safe—though some of the fields are destroyed—but ahead of the monster lies the rolling hills and fertile fields of northwestern Ivras… and beyond, the borders to Siregal and Nymene.

As the news of the monster spreads across Ivras, concern is raised for what will happen if the monster isn’t stopped; would it cross the border into foreign territory, and if so, how will Nymene and Siregal react? Could it be viewed as a hostile maneuver? Will this spur the Crown into action?

Most people, however, are worried about far more immediate dangers. There are other villages ahead, directly in the path of the Pyre, and now begins a race against time and flame…

What does your character do?
