Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

When they draw muscles like this. Heck, this was hard to draw, idk how some people do that so easily.

Also when people call characters with this body type "daddy", "swole", or even "bara".

When you bring your sketchbook out in public so you don't get bored, but you end up getting side tracked and end up not drawing at all

hehehe a favorite topic to read

-someone commissioning me saying "hey can you draw in someone else's style?" like no... go commission them instead?

-colors showing differently in different screens and causing me to recolor my ocs after laptop change

-people being mad at colorpicking ocs??? like you can make so many designs out of a palette????

-same goes for "dont be inspired by my ocs!!!" like as long as they're not doing a 1 on 1 copy you should be okay.

-a lot of art programs having a really bad binary/pixel art tool. like aside from actual pixel art programs only sai and ps does this well for some reason

How there's no "I feel home" platform anymore. Had high hopes for Buzzly but we all know what happened.

I'm not into regular social medias anymore like Insta, Twitter, Tiktok, Tumblr etc.. Even deviantart feels meh. And my followers are dead anyway.

Idk if I have high hopes for InkBlot either. my excitement for new places kinda died.

I do enjoy being on Neocities though. Commenting on other websites and browsing is quite addicting. Ngl. But it still feels I'm not connected (yet?!).

I feel the same way as skykristal. all the big art sites are severely unmoded, making them insufferable & any newer sites/apps either don't get popular enough, or turn bad aswell.

social media isn't made for artists at all (I tried posting to insta for 5y, followed all the "rules" to get your art seen by the algorithm, got 30 followers.)

art is such a big part of the internet & the fact that artists don't really have good sites to post on is sad. I just want a good art site to main.

yes i'm still mad at the online art community for demonizing the process of using references once again. I'm getting over the mindset but it's annoying bc I feel like I can barely draw AT ALL without using a reference half the time, everything comes out so wonky looking and I keep having to catch myself and tell myself using references for poses or hands or bodies is completely fine ; _ :

atempause

art references/tutorials where every male body looks like the motherfucker is about to pass out from dehydration and steroid overdose and they actively push that mess as if that's the only right way to draw a realistic body
