Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

RE: help other artists threads-
half agree? Because ik the main reason those threads exist are because depending on the field, POC and/or LGBTQ tend to not get the spotlight as much, and some of them could be part of a heritage/history month thing.

But I also can see the issue with only acknowledging creators based of ethnicity/gender/sexuality/etc. instead of their work. In some contexts that causes an issue where people are pigeon-holed into creating content that fits what other people think their identity(s) should be (Learned recently this is an issue in the gallery world, where POC artists are mostly seen in exhibits relating to traumas/struggles, or people devaluing female artists work if it doesn't look like its "critiquing the patriarchy"). + imo it kinda devalues the work? Like if the only reason people are given to check out something is because of representation, what does that say about the main content? Story? Art direction? Work the creators poured into it?

Though the issues I list above are mostly within the gallery/musuem & mainstream media worlds. And most of those showcase threads are made with good intentions imo/theres plenty of cases where the spotlight is mostly on their work & projects. And most importantly it's people choosing to advertise themselves that way instead of gallery managers and corporate heads. I personally steer away though bc I'd rather people follow me for what I can do than only because i'm Gay & not white if that makes sense

TL:DR I think it's a double edged sword; on one hand it's great to give underrepped people some time in the spotlight, on the other there becomes a problem where people only care abt them them based off identity & not the actual work itself.

Semi-Related: but people only discussing representation with mainstream media & ignoring other scenes that exist. We probably shouldn't be begging faceless corps to represent people and overshadow indie content that 9/10 times handles it better than any corp ever will : |

+ Bigots who freak out over disney's half-assed 5 seconds of gay screentime wouldn't survive 5 seconds in the graphic novel world (and less than 2 in the indie comics scene LMFAO)

the reason those types of threads exist is bc artists from marginalized groups are often overlooked and underrepresented in the art world, and it just helps give them a little boost. it's a virtual stepping stool. unfortunately a lot of the time it seems like companies/corporations just use them to virtue signal without any intention of actually contacting the artists showing their work

i think the whole sort of divisions incredibly stupid. I mean, first of all, as a female, when today a man can be attacked from saying something I find slightly inappropriate, I don’t think I’m some poor abused person with zero voice. People will be people, they’ll hate on you for zero reason and try do do bad stuff. And yes, it’s horrible how women still face abuse, but that’s why it’s important to educate woman, POC, and LGBTQIA+ on how to get out of bad situations and find confidence deep within us vs relying on the world to give ourselves validation.

Following the same point of having to be strong, I don’t like how people give people special privileges because they check checkboxes. First of all, if it happened to me, I’d be absolutely offended. Because is my art that bad that you feel like you have to advertise me more and why can’t I be in the same therapy group, am I more fragile? Why can’t I earn my followers same as everyone? I’m strong and independent, and if I set my mind to it, I can do amazing on equal ground. Besides, it’s also offending to those not checking the boxes since you dont even know what the persons been through. Even if they grew up wealthy, they might’ve been untalented and had to work harder than you to get to half the level. And then artists that don’t deserve it get followers and people that deserve it don’t. You’re not lifting anyone up, you’re bringing everyone down.

I think it is completely fine to have threads/art supports that help out marginalized groups. White cishets make up a good 90% of mainstream media anyway. Not saying cishet white folks can’t do artist supports but there’s a reason poc and LGBT+ folks want their work to be seen more…

It drives me nuts when an artist only draws a single shade of skin tone, and claims that is the only tan tone there is. There is more than one shade of tan guys, I promise. There are light tans to medium tans, to dark tans. I beg those who want to make a tan character to please look up skin charts and compare warm and cold tan tones, before making the choice to only draw a single shade of tan. I am of the light cold tan tone variety. As a child, I used to be darker, but became lighter as I aged into adulthood. Time has not been kind to my skin.

Regardless, I just want people overall to understand that there is more than one shade of tan skin, and not just think that there's a single tan that must be followed every time a tan character is drawn.

I half-agree and half-disagree with all the people complaining about the segregated art spaces. In one part I see it as a neat opportunity to find connection with other artists of your personal ethnicity or heritage, such as black artists threads, hispanic artists threads, LGBTQ+ artists threads and so on; because whether we want to admit it or not, we usually feel more easily connected with people we consider "part of our tribe", even if what connects us to them is limited to the color of our skin or a shared language that isn't English. It feels good to find people you can share unique life experiences with that are also artists you can admire, or watch as they grow. Seeing it from that perspective, and being one such intersectional bingo artist myself, it's just too difficult for me to see it as a bad thing.

There's however the other side of the coin: when threads like these are intended to create actual segregation between groups to the point that non-members of the groups aren't allowed to interact, or if they do, they aren't allowed to have an opinion that isn't opening their wallets for all these artists, which imo only furthers this "white savior" complex that runs so rampant in the site. It also reads terribly when I see a company or whatever posting that they're hiring but only accept POC women or trans-identified people because it reads like rather than you being outstanding because of your craft, all these people care about is literally your genitals and the color of your skin. Sure, it's also good that they're giving members of ever increasing minorities a chance, but I don't think I'd like to know I only made it to this or that place because I'm a diversity hire. I'm not by any means a competitive person, but I want to think that people who hire me do it because they actually like my work and not just because I'm X Y and Z. Reason I also don't usually introduce myself as anything other than my name and my pronouns to people on the internet: partly because that's all you need to know about me, and partly because who the hell cares what I am other than an opinionated artist on the web?

I mea, maybe to just small group, but the issue is because as you said so yourself, they’re a small number. So why are they trying to take 50 percent of the attention when they’re 10% of the group.

but it’s fine if they do it, as long as they realize that people aren’t gonna magically care about their art cuz they’re from a marginalized group. I’ll continue liking old white guys art cuz they’re good, but you give me a non preachy, just as good lgbtq artist, I’ll support em just as much

Lol, if you’re looking at my art and tryna laugh at it, I never claimed anything about my own art. Plus, you don’t even have anything on your acc.

and darinwaller I think that it’s perfectly fine for companies to only hire trans/poc/lgbtq as long as they STARTED like that. Like you see black people not getting work and you decide to make your own company? Well, your company, your rules. As long as you’re not taking a company that has always hired everyone then decide to take over and are perfectly fine with another starter doing the same thing but only for people you don’t like, everythings good.

SINISTERR

Do you not understand how to progress society? How diversity is important? LOL @ "As long as you’re not taking a company that has always hired everyone then decide to take over " You sound nutty. Decide to take over???? Either you are stupid or your wording is bad. Leaning towards the former, though.

Also sweetie, I don't need to show my art or characters if I don't want to, it's called privacy settings ♥

I just went to peek onto here because I have some freetime and yeah, I think we should try to keep the thread civil haha. I don't really want to put my cent into the whole seperated art groups thing because I have no business to be in it. But nobody should be judging anyone by their cover, at all.
