✒️ Writers' thread ✒️

Posted 6 years, 10 months ago (Edited 6 years, 8 months ago) by castra

I didn't see a thread like this and figured it'd be nice to have some sort of chillout chat for writers! ; v ;

Talk about your current writing projects, your stories, planning, plotting, whatever as long as it's even vaguely writing related!
Anyone who identifies as a writer is more than welcomed; there is no strict definition for the word or anything!

Here are also some questions to start things off:
✒️ Who are you?
✒️ How long have you been writing?
✒️ Your preferred languages in writing?
✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?
✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?
✒️ Any current writing projects?

And some rules, just to make sure this thread will stay nice for everyone!

✒️ Make sure to be polite and nice to each other
✒️ No vagueposting about other users or people in general; let's keep the negativity in vent threads!
✒️ Don't attack / insult other people's interest / favourite genres etc. Discussion is good and disagreements happen, but attacking and insulting are hardly a respectful way of communication.
✒️ Preferably keep things SFW and black out sensitive / upsetting / NSFW-ish content like this

I'm currently kind of frustrated with my writing.  I recently wrote out a big story event and since they I feel like I'm just writing filler without any real sense of direction!  I know what the next major event will be, but I feel like I'm just waffling around until the characters reach that point, ahhh.

This seems like fun!~

Tori, I know that feeling. Filler is the devil but it's a necessary evil. I believe it was Mark Twain who called it "writing Hoopteedoodle".

Beautiful-Madness, a friend of mine recommended Ren,py but I'm not familiar with either of them. I would be up for helping you spit ball plots though!

@beautiful-madness I use ren'py and it's suuuuuper wonderful! the documentation is ridiculously comprehensive and helps you through the basics all the way up to more advanced stuff with ease. i was using it earlier today to customize my textboxes and fonts, wahaha. the community forum is also pretty useful if you have any specific questions / problems / ideas that you need help with!

the biggest obstacle with renpy is that it requires a bit of programming knowledge. this is the first im hearing of tyranobuilder, but it seems like a drag & drop - esque editor. renpy on the other hand requires you to write hard code for your game - it's pretty simple, though. and again, the documentation is good at explaining everything, plus i belieeeve ren'py's initial installation comes with a tutorial game that walks you through making your first game.

essentially, i think that if you're willing to learn a bit of programming, ren'py's the way to go. it's ridiculously flexible & customizeable, and it's got a community following that's ready to lend you a hand if you need it. and to top it all off, it's free! :D

It's great to see this thread so active lately! If anyone ever would like feedback on any lines, or scenes that you've written, don't hesitate to share! :D

@beautiful-madness Visual novel talk is totally accepted here! And aaaa I have used both renpy and tyrano and my current VN project is with tyrano so I can talk about that program a bit!

Tyrano updated just recently and seems to be working better now so I totally recommend giving it a go at least to figure if you like it or not! Some of the things are so much easier in it than they are in renpy, but on the other hand some things in tyrano don't work at all like they do in renpy and it can get a bit frustrating? Especially since some things don't have a solution just yet. But imo if you're not planning to make a super customized game with unique reading system then tyrano is a nice choice, and it's definitely more "organized" in look since it's made to be beginner friendly.

But yeye I think both are nice and good programs and it just really depends on your own preferences? You might want to make a mock game with both or something to see which suits more your own personal organizing and preferences and whatnot! This is what my tyranobuilder VN looks like right now btw.

Edit // if you want I can also give screenshots of what tyrano looks like I guess?

Caine

@beautiful-madness No problem! And thank you omg ; o ;  < 3

But yeah definitely just try out all you can! Tyrano is around 15$-ish if I remember right so it's not an overwhelmingly expensive thing or anything but yeah. I actually tried out renpy as my first thing as well and made a super small school project vn with it when I was in high school hehe

✒️ Who are you?

I go by various names on different websites but just 'De' is fine.

✒️ How long have you been writing?

I've been writing every now and then for at least over ten years, not sure how many years exactly. Mostly just fictions of my OCs though sometimes I also did a tag/meme like this.

✒️ Your preferred languages in writing?

My native language (Thai) and English. However, lately I've been in a somewhat 'paranoid' mode and always doubting myself whether my English writing is grammatically correct or if I choose the correct word for context or if my phrasing is weird and no one will understand what I mean to express.

✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?

Mainly fictions concerning my OCs that exploring the complexity of their personality, mental state, relationship with certain other OCs or history.

✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?

Nothing in particular I guess. Although I often threw silly jokes into my story too often than it should be. If you ask me to describe the closest thing to the usual tone in my fictions, probably (teenage hormonal tantrum type of)drama and (not that funny actually)comedy. In a really rare case when I feel confident that I know enough about the subject, I also took a dip in historical.

✒️ Any current writing projects?

Aside from writing the history section in a few characters on my TH which hasn't yet filled out, not really. There is an idea floating in my head to write something about my OCs but I'm just procrastinating since it's only a handful of tiny random ideas but not yet a concrete plot. The last actual project I did was writing 25 pages of fiction in Thai about the past of three OCs from the meme link on dA above back in April. The closest to something decent I've written recently is probably the history section of my OC, Slava.

Does anyone else make mood boards for their characters?

Caine

dearalese I have done one or two for personal use, but I dont want to run into trouble with each photo's copyrights so I don't really bother (a lot of the time the right source is super hard to find because of excessive reposting / op of the photo doesnt want their photos to be reuploaded etc). I usually make youtube playlists instead o/
