Answer to a question from the user above

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 years, 8 months ago) by Caine

Similarly to "answer to the question from the oc above", the idea of this game is to answer to something the user above you asks! I was debating whether to name the thread this or "ask a question to the user below" and got a headache trying to decide which one, but really they are the same thing!

This is not an OC game: this is for users to ask things from other users, similarly to "ask a question to the user above you" but in reverse. Hopefully it'll be a fun way to learn more about the users here & get a chance to talk about something you like!

Rules:

  1. Make sure to claim first! This way you'll avoid getting ninjad by someone faster than you
  2. Your answer can be as long or short as you wish to make it to be! Just use the spoiler marker if you end up writing a lot or including lot of images
  3. Wait for at least 3 people to post after you before claiming again! If 12 hours pass, anyone can reply and/or post a new answer
  4. Keep your questions vague enough that people will have something to answer to them!
Don't ask:
  • any super personal questions, like full name or home town
  • questions of morals such as "what would you do if...". While these can be fun, they can really easily get under people's skin and cause stir and drama, and we're here to have a good time and not fight
  • anything that could be considered even vaguely NSFW or sexual in nature
  • idk just keep it civil and not weird or creepy and you'll be fine

If I see someone asking for too personal things or being rude or behaving strangely I'll privately message them to fix their message. Feel free to also DM me if you see strange or rule-breaking behavior!

Question examples:

Here are some things to maybe give ideas to what kind of things to ask! Feel free to use these or do your own thing, as long as it's following the rules

  • INTERESTS: Favourite movie/book/anything? Hobbies? Strange trivia you know?
  • CHARACTERS: Your most expensive character?
  • CREATIVE: Are you more of an artist or a writer? Your creative influences?
  • STORYTIME: Funniest elementary school memory? Has anything strange ever happened to you?

If the thread has been stuck for +12 hours anyone is free to answer and ask a new question!

For the first person posting:

What kind of music do you like?

For designs that I make

I usually go for neutral tones with brighter pops of color because I feel like it makes the character more eye catching. I love giving characters big fluffy hair and interesting clothing shapes because it makes them more fun to draw. I also like to include little snippets that hint towards their lore/details in their stories because I really love seeing things like that in media. Usually I design them after I get an idea and let it sit for a while. I feel like it’s easier to develop a connection to a character that way. Honestly it’s mostly about making them fun to draw for me lol

When you make fandom ocs, do you draw those characters in the style of the fandom or do you use your own?
CaptainRobi

It depends on the fandom, I'm writing about. For Final Fantasy IX, I tended to go along the canon artstyle of the characters, to avoid having to think too hard on having to imagine what they look like, but nowadays I've leaned more creatively and developed 'what-if' situations when it comes to drawing new ones. So now, I have like 2-3 of them.

Others tend to break the mould of the usual OCs in other fandoms, like Stardew and Terraria, where they have written backgrounds with alternative follow ups to the main storyline; Including a few twists and turns along the way.

What's your general feelings towards fanfictions? Do they show a different better vision from the original writer's? Or are they considered a waste of creativity?

kisshim

I have an obsession for fanfiction lmao. My reading habit really picks up thanks to them actually! Having that sense of familiarity from a fandom you already know, while also knowing to expect new things (that won't dissapoint you, I swear canon sometimes just sucks. Looking at you MCU) is an experience I've come to enjoy from reading fanfictions!

Not all fanfictions are 'better' than canon, of course. Sometimes you just want to see characters from an action shounen taking a break for once, or just have that sweet, sweet self-indulgent shipping galore lmao.

What are your thoughts on your current artstyle? Are you satisfied with what you can do right now, or are you aiming to improve even more? Maybe you don't really care about improving, seeing drawing as just a hobby that you doesn't really feel the need to practice up to perfection? If you are practicing, what is your ideal artstyle that you are trying to achieve?

ASTRAIOS

I think my art has been influenced by everything I've watched throughout my child/teen years e.g anime, avatar the last airbender, and some of my favourite online artists (all unconsciously). A lot of horror films, creepy stories and MUSIC have also shaped the essence and feel of my art rather than the style itself, arguably even more!

Where do you draw inspiration for your characters? Are they drawn from pieces of yourself, or things you've experienced, or things that you've seen and liked?

Inkagna

The latter, certainly.
I tend to pull inspiration from what I love and find appealing, though my interests interlock in a whole ton of aspects.
The three main inspirations are Nature, Music and Diablo II.
The latter is an old game that has got an unbelievable influence on what I like and what kind of atmospheres I enjoy.
I played it as a young child and life hasn't been the same since, haha.

Overall, I draw subjects I find appealing, out of my love and adoration of those specific things.
"Love♡ inspires me the most" like some tacky poster would say.

Which branch of art would you like to learn, aside from the one you're currently involved with?
(E.g sculpting, whittling, music or other handicrafts.)

applesause

I've always wanted to start acting!

It would be a good way to slowly and carefully get out of my comfort zone as im not good wth crowds
but i would love for more people to see im more than what i am now!!
acting maybe movie directing!!

when creating a character or design, what grant you your motivation or ideas when making it?

I love side characters more. When I was a youngster and RPed in groups everyone would be fighting and trying to one-up each other so that they could be the main character (bc we were all youngsters of course) but it just annoyed the heck out of me. Side characters are a lot easier, they're less demanding, they can have as simple a backstory as needed, and they tend to get a lot!

Have you ever made a character with a specific story/personality, but the minute it was put into the real world it completely changed (it became easier writing the character in a different voice or with a new personality)? Did it happen out of the blue or did any interactions shape that?

Aloofcloud

Surprise surprise, that character is UNO!!!!! He was suppose to be like super cruel, fights everyone, kills them all- but instead he turned into someone who likes hanging out with people, is usually chill, and only really kills people who form a contract with him with the understanding they'll die in the end.  He's not nearly as manipulative as I planned him out to be, usually having a carefree don't give a fuck attitude instead. It happened the minute I started writing him.

Question: What are your favorite go-to character tropes? We all have them

MeowMeow422

Hmm, I have a lot but when it comes to males I usually go with the strong and silent types. Somtimes they're a brooder, others they're downright hostile.

For females, the seductress/ charmer types. You know, the kind that would use 'darling' or 'honey' for pretty much anyone.

I also like doing just wholesome cheery babs. Plus, characters who are not what they are percieved as.

_________

What's you fav kinda palatte to use? Colourful, saturated, pastels? 6-8 main colours or just 3-4? Warm, cold or neutral colours? Etc

HardyLark

I wouldn’t say it’s a favorite but I tend to use desaturated colors, all because an art teacher I had in HS said you shouldn’t be using anything that’s not desaturated a little. And while now I can see a point to it, in hindsight it made me go “oh okay, I’ll suck all the color out then.” And it’s been something I’ve been unlearning since then. But really one thing I’ve come to realize is that saturation pops and it’s fun to work with, and though I don’t do it as often as I should. If there’s one take away from this, it’s that do what inspires you, and take any advice you get, even from professional artists with the knowledge that it’s subjective, and while it can still be helpful, you shouldn’t let it keep you from drawing how you want!

Who of your characters has the oddest origins? By that I mean, what happened during a characters creation that wasn’t what you’d expect or caught you by surprise? And how did it, if at all, effect the character as they are now?

Oh. My. Goodness. You have literally no idea. Me and my friend can make an entire Bible long book about the ocs we haven't posted on here and their role and back stories. Here's just a few otherwise we'll be here for centuries

One of my favs we're working on is Aster. He's an exiled prince from a dragon based kingdom. At first he was just kinda created for the shits and giggles, but after my friend wrote a story involving another character out of a dream they had of a prince getting pregnant (literally don't ask 💀) they started to develop it more and merged the two together. The character from the story they made was a really sensitive and emotional person that loved his partner Tsukishima. But he was supposed to be wedded off to a woman so they could have children together. There are hints of him getting angry and uncontrollable of his anger. Then later down the line a big dragon destroys most of the castle and he goes in and kicks its ass (will be important later). Later in the story he eventually has an abortion and blames himself. Eventually Tsukishima leaves because Aster's parents asked him to for the mental well being of Aster. After waiting years for Tsukishima to come back he gets news that Tsukishima has apparently died and he becomes fueled with anger. His guardian dragon (a dragon people get as almost like a steed) and him were battling for practice, but Aster eventually gets the best of him and hurts the dragon. Out of self defense the dragon accidentally kills him, being chased down by Aster's siblings until it flies away. During a special cultural funeral, Aster's body is left under a special family tree and after everyone leaves the dragon comes back. Accidentally revives Aster, but before he could apologize the dragon flies away. One day out of having a mental breakdown he comes to the conclusion that his suffering is his dad's fault and challenges him to a battle, destroying most of the castle. After defeating him he kills him in his sheer anger. Realizing what he's done he runs away to a new land.

In this new land he battles countless dragon and becomes known as the Draco Conquerer. He meets a Kamikai (a servant to a god) named Kirei. They become friends and he decides one day to ask him to find a special scroll for him so he could destroy become powerful and destroy various dragon shrines. The gods crack down on this and catch him trying to destroy a shrine. He eventually gets sealed away as he is deemed as dangerous. And that's just the summary lmao

Luka is based on my friend playing Monster hunter stories rise, but they remade his story so it fits our world and lore. Luka's parents where well known hunters and frequently left their island home town to do hunting. Meaning his uncle watched him and his brother often. He practically raised his brother, teaching him many things such as fishing, hunting and other various survival skills. They got the news that one day the parents died due to losing a battle between a beast named Diablo. It was difficult for him and he wanted to leave a legacy like his parents so he too became a hunter. Traveling along with his guardian dragon, they went off to defeat large and dangerous monsters. Many respected him as a hunter and they claim how he's the splitting image of his parents. He faced his greatest challenge yet, the beast that killed his parents. Diablo. A kaiju sized wyvern that brought terror amongst people and destroyed anyone who crossed him. He was too optimistic about the encounter and died, much like his parents. His guardian dragon out of frustration killed Diablo, mourning and feeling guilty for the death of Luka.

Noah is Luka's younger brother and looks up to him with respect. After the death of their parents he didn't know how to feel considering the fact he didn't have much of a relationship with them. Was worried about Luka becoming a hunter as he didn't want him to face a similar fate, but upon hearing no sign of his arrival, he decided to try and become a hunter to find him. He went through a difficult trial to obtain special blades for hunters with a passionate and firey spirit. (His story is so long and is still ongoing but yeah I really want to post him. He's one of favorite characters of all time)

Zhang Jingfei is a Kami Sealer. Basically people who keep specific spirits from destroy or wrecking havoc on innocent people. She's optimistic, energetic, friendly, impulsive and not great at solving conflict. She loves her job and meeting various people being a social butterfly. I love her about but she's not quite done yet. :( I really wanna post her though

Dragon goddess from Japan. Since she's a goddess I know my friend is gonna take FOREVER to perfect her design. Basically she started the Kami Temples organization so she could protect people from dangerous yokai. But this idea eventually becomes confusing and distorted over the years as she'll simply justify sealing someone just because they are associated with another dangerous yokai

Aether is the goddess's brother and is the founder of the Aether Foundation. He wants to create a world where old deities, demigods, etc are left behind so he could create a "New World." Basically evil science man tries to play god. Uses science and spiritual powers to "create" yokai.  The Aether Foundation is very important to our story and my buddy did a sketch of him, but alas, he'd still far from done 😔

Deity of Chaos. Aka: God's Beast. He's based on my friend's Silvally from Pokèmon shield. He was originally a deity, but the Aether Foundation wanted to create a deity with their own special Aether Foundation spice. They made him stronger and drastically changed his appearance. God's Beast hates being a test animal and one day caused massive destruction to the foundation and it is known as The Aether Foundation Incident. He escaped and after being caught by the Kami Temples and escaping numerous times, he was finally caught and was given a mask to stunt many of his powers and was sealed away.

I can go on and on, but if you're interested I will info dump EVERYTHING onto you
