"Hm. The answer to that depends on whether I'm talking of myself or of Henry Newman.
As Mr. Newman, I have no immediate family. I'm english by ancestry and was born near Oxford as the son of a clerk. My brother died of spanish influenza in 1920. Furthermore my parents perished in a car crash in 1932, leaving me with a small inheritance and a few distant cousins.
In reality, I do have a family. They live in Brighton. Mother, father, great aunt and younger brother Benjamin. My great aunt and parents were german immigrants who came to England in 1909 and became devout anglicans for reasons I've never been quite clear on. I'm not close to them anymore - in fact I've been distancing myself from them ever since moving to London. I don't dislike them, but we have nothing in common, and I think poor aunt Gretel would have a heart attack if she ever learned that her dear grand-niece was a lesbian.
I...suppose the closest thing to "family" nowadays would be my husband, Terry. Because unlike my real family I actually enjoy talking to him, and there's so much less I have to keep a secret from him."
