Pierce yawned, pulling himself out of his slumber. Something was off, he felt cold. Oh yeah… Ace didn’t need him anymore, she didn’t need him there to protect her from her fears. He knew that was a good thing, but he missed her waking him up every morning, singing her to sleep. He knew she shouldn’t need him to comfort her from the monsters in the dark, they were the same age after all. But nowadays she rarely even talked to him. She had new friends now, he was glad she had friends… but what about him, he didn’t have anyone now. He wanted to talk to someone, talk about how he felt about having no one to talk to. He wanted someone to talk to him, Ace was practically the only cat who even knew he existed. Without her he was nothing. Pierce lay back down, he might as well fall back asleep, it’s not like there was any reason for him to be awake. He closed his eyes but his mind wandered; why did no one like him, he wasn’t great at talking to people, and sure he could be annoying, but Ace liked him… didn’t she? She used to be lonely too, the most amazing cat, but too shy, too afraid of being abandoned. But now wasn’t Pierce the one who was abandoned. He wanted to be happy he really did, he didn’t enjoy wallowing in self pity. But he was in quicksand, sinking deeper and deeper, it becoming harder and harder to get out, but nobody was there to pull him up, he was alone. He was at times tempted to just let it envelop him, would anybody even notice. If he couldn’t get free then why not just let the sadness suffocate him. But no, he’d wait, maybe someday, someone or something would give him a reason to exist, so he rolled out of bed and opened his eyes. He’d go through the day with everybody else, he wouldn’t sleep until dark and wake up just to eat, Pierce was strong, and he’d be okay in the end.
