POST-APOCOLYPTIC / CYBERPUNK / DYSTOPIAN

Setting

The world of Ambinetics takes place in a distant post - post - apocalyptic future variation of our Earth where a majority of the planet has become uninhabitable. Much of human history has become lost to time and the destruction of what once was. What is left of humanity ranges from barely surviving to thriving in a society that is a blend of cyberpunk and dystopian. Though humanity once faced extinction, those who are left exist in overcrowded cities with access to hyper advanced technologies that keeps their world running. From the elite to the impoverished, humans of this world experience a society dominated by computer technology and the power of insanely wealthy corporations. 

The settlements that exist build upward rather than outward, resulting in a landscape that is devoid of natural flora and open spaces. Unless you live in The Pinnacle you could go your entire life without seeing natural greenery as your world would be that of a neon decorated metal and concrete jungle. In many places even getting a good glimpse of the sky can be a difficult task as smog and infrastructure take up much of the view. As a result of this it is most commonly accepted that the higher up you are living the more well off you are. Lower levels are older and crowded while higher levels are newer and offer a view of all of those below you as well as a glimpse of the sky. 

But why build upwards and not outwards? Much of earth's landscape is a heavily polluted resource deprived wasteland that is made up of the broken skeletons of the past. A barren landscape filled with the rubble of humanity's misdoings. It’s desolate and lifeless with deadly weather patterns and near non-existent access to drinkable water sources. Lands may be war torn and treacherous with some areas being irradiated and unsafe for humans to exist within. While there was a time that each settlement would expand their borders they each have reached as far as is feasible for them and build upward instead. This is simply more cost and resource effective for those living here.

AMBINETICS - AN OVERVIEW

ORIGIN / UTILITY / RECEPTION

Where it Began

Techwave Initiative, whose corporate headquarters is located in The Pinnacle, is the birthplace of Ambinetics. A uniquely intelligent, high-ranking employee developed the genius idea for Ambinetics. While it took some time to perfect, he’d eventually succeed in their creation. Ren would be the first proper Ambinetic and become the face for the entire brand. Anywhere you see an advertisement for Ambinetics, and sometimes even for Techwave Initiative as a whole, you’ll find Ren promoting their products and company. With the power of Techwave Initiative and the popularity of Ambinetics Ren is like a celebrity, an idol of sorts, despite Ambinetics being a product. It’s practically unheard of that anyone wouldn’t know his face…or rather his screen. 


An Ambinetic's Purpose

Ambinetics have a wide range of functionality when it comes to serving those who utilize them! With human level intelligence these service biodriods can learn just about any skill to suit a buyer's needs and desires. An Ambi can act as a personal assistant to their owner, helping in everyday tasks such cooking, cleaning, and shopping. They can also serve in retail, food service, entertainment, construction, security, healthcare, and so much more! Basically any job a human can do an Ambi can take on the challenge! Ambinetics create great workforces for large industries as well as wonderful personal companion items! With their versatility practically everyone could use their very own Ambinetic! 


Public Perception

Ambinetics, since their launch, have become incredibly integrated into society. Everywhere you look you will find an Ambi ready to serve you or their owner. They are incredibly useful creations that just about everyone wants to own. Meanwhile, with prices that range from the affordable to the wildly obscene, most members of society can get their hands on a model of Ambinetic! Most people have no issues with Ambinetics and find them to be a positive addition to society due to their convenience, servitude, and obedience. Ambis can be made to work incredibly long shifts for companies and do not need to be paid, only maintained, so big business loves them. 

This creates one drawback for many people, mainly the impoverished. Ambinetics have taken over a large section of employment, leaving many without a means of work. So, there are those who resent Ambinetics for taking their jobs and livelihoods from them. Additionally there are those who find themselves rather put off by Ambis. The use of sentient AI is prohibited...so how do they work...and how are they so life-like? However, even if they were to actively question the nature of Ambinetics and how they truly work, their voices would be drowned out...or go missing altogether. Techwave Initiate wields far too much power to be hindered by such tiny levels of doubt. 



AMBINETICS - THE LAW AND THE MIND

SOCIAL / SOCIETAL

Legality & Ambinetics

In simple terms Ambinetics have no legal rights within society. They are not considered citizens or even true sentient beings. Ambis are merely viewed by most of society as just another technological product for use and consumption. Much like we view cellphones. They are property and nothing more as far as the legal system is concerned. This means Ambinetics cannot own property themselves, nor could they engage in legally binding contracts such as marriage. Additionally Ambinetics do not live freely in society, they are either owned by an individual or a company so that they can serve them however their owner pleases. 

When it comes to the law in regards to Ambinetic's it is also important to note that it is prohibited in-world for individuals to perform maintenance on their Ambinetic's outside of superficial external cosmetics such as modifying decorative wings traits and things of that nature. Citizens are not allowed to maintenance or modify any internal components of an Ambinetic, only a certified Techwave employee can do so. Techwave Initiative have alert systems in place that immediately informs them if an Ambinetic is being tampered with and where said Ambinetic is located. It is rumored that anyone who tries to get inside an Ambinetic to see how they work goes missing indefinitely... 


Sentience & Cognizance

Each Ambi can have varying levels of programming that allows them to be more expressive or communicative than others. Some Ambis are more drone like, lacking the ability to speak or do anything besides the simple tasks they were designed to do. These types are most commonly seen in factory work type environments where interaction with humans is not needed. Those who service humans directly are able to express more so they can be polite and welcoming to customers and clients. However, the most expressive of any Ambis tend to be those who are put in performer / entertainment positions. It is often desired that these types of Ambis have unique and expressive personalities that can captivate an audience. 

Techwave Initiative, if asked, would deny that Ambinetics have any true sentience. However, Ambis to varying degrees, have been observed to have sentient and cognizant behaviors. Able to think or feel for themselves outside of the direct tasks and orders they have been given. Those who might witness an Ambi behaving a little too human might be put off by them. Oftentimes showing sentient or cognizant behaviors will mean a trip to the repair shop, a bug being assumed to be plaguing the system of the Ambi in question and causing them to act strange. This however really depends on the owner of each Ambi. There are some who might not realize these behaviors are an issue or prefer them. Particularly those who might get attached to their Ambis the way someone might get attached to something like a digital pet in a video game.

Relationships Involving Ambinetics

While there are many who treat Ambis as unfeeling machines there are some who treat Ambis kindly, even if they don’t believe Ambis can really feel anything. There are some, based on what was discussed in the last section, that might find this realistic programming to be endearing and cause the Ambis owner to become more attached and caring towards them. There are some owners who develop varying levels of bonds with their Ambis when this happens. The most common type is to see their Ambi as a pet and treat them in an affectionate manner as such. They might cater to their Ambi a little, wanting to make sure they are comfortable even if they are still working for them in some way. Though this still presents the dynamic of the owner and the owned. Some might treat the Ambi that works as a servant in their home almost as though they are a part of the family, though this still doesn't really change the previously mentioned dynamic. 

[ The following paragraph is 18+ ] And then there is the more taboo… Ambinetic’s are utilized in all sorts of industries, this includes the sex industry. Hiring a human or an Ambi for sex work carry about the same levels of stigma to them, though in much of this world such acts aren't judged too harshly. This practice is most commonly found in Neoterra and while it is true that some Ambis have been put into the role of sex workers there is actually something considered more taboo than using an Ambi to simply satiate sexual desires. 

There are a rare few humans who decide to partake in emotionally romantic relationships with Ambinetics. This is considered highly taboo as for many it’s seen as no different from falling in love with a cell phone. Those who admit to such relationships are often shunned or considered mentally unwell. As such, these sorts of relationships are often kept secret. This can be said to be true regardless of which of the major settlements you live in, though the reactions of those around you may vary. In The Pinnacle you will be shunned by your peers and it's possible your Ambi will be taken from you to be decommissioned. Meanwhile, if you live in Detritus you and your Ambi may face physical violence as there are groups there that detest Ambis for taking their livelihoods. Neoterra can offer a blend of previously mentioned reactions. 

Lastly there is the question of platonic and romantic relationships between fellow Ambis. Technically they shouldn’t be able to have relationships with one another. However, as mentioned previously, some Ambis are able to express themselves more than others, and as such they can develop feelings for one another. Since Ambis don’t live freely they tend to be limited in their social circles. Most commonly they are limited to interacting with those related to their jobs, that being clients/owners and co-workers. So, if these Ambis do develop a relationship with someone else, platonic or otherwise, they are likely to be someone from this pool of people. Generally speaking an Ambi will know it’s best to keep strong feelings for one another hidden. They are aware displaying such affections can get them sent for repairs or decommissioned so they are cautious. 

There are some owners that like to pair Ambis the way someone might pair up their dolls whilst playing pretend. They might say that two Ambis are siblings or related in some other familial way when it’s not actually possible for it to be true. They may also say that a pair is married even when it’s not legally possible.. It all part of treating Ambis as their *things*. There are a fair amount of people who like to use Ambis as trophies of their wealth and adorn them in all sorts of traits and attire. This is most commonly seen in The Pinnacle but is also fairly common in Neoterra. These types of people also tend to the ones who openly ‘pair up’ their Ambis in one way or another. It’s not taken seriously though and does not usually prompt concern.

BIRTHPLACE OF AMBINETICS

An Overview

Techwave Initiative, whose corporate headquarters is located in The Pinnacle, is where the concept of Ambinetics was born. Seeing as this world is ruled by mega corporations it should be no surprise that Techwave Initiative has an immense amount of power over this world. In fact, this company is practically pulling the strings to just about everything. Anything and everything society could ever need leads back to Techwave Initiative. Without them it’s questionable that society would be able to continue functioning as they provide not just luxury goods and advanced technologies but are the source of invaluable resources such as food and water. Additionally they are the leaders in all current technological advancements, including in the medical field which also involves the development and production of augments for humans. Techwave also provides a vast amount of jobs despite the fact they are the same company that rendered so many positions obsolete through their creation and use of Ambinetics. 

Most of humanity's brightest minds work for Techwave at various locations within The Pinnacle. However, they often place ads in more impoverished areas such as Detritus offering job opportunities for those who sign up with promises to live within the elite city in exchange for their employment in menial jobs under Techwave. Any who accept such offers never return from whence they came, nor do those who knew them hear from them again…but this is expected from those who have created a life for themselves within the superior utopia that is The Pinnacle...surely they are too happy and fulfilled to think of the slums they left behind.

HUMANS / LIFE WITHIN THE AMBI-VERSE

An Overview

There are three levels to society; Those who are labeled as the elite who wish for nothing, those who exist in the neon technicolor cities of entertainment, and those who struggle to survive on the scraps of those above them. The largest and most prominent settlements are The Pinnacle, Neoterra, and Detritus. For a more detailed breakdown of each location, including their varying cultures and attributes, check out the WORLD MAP tab and LOCATIONS page. This section is for a more general basic understanding of the people. 

Those who exist in this world deal with over-privatization and commodification of practically everything. Nothing comes for free and everything has a high price. There is no proper public education and citizens have to either pay to participate in private educational institutions or rely on one another and community run education. Both are difficult to obtain. The Pinnacle is where one would find prime education that is free to all of its citizens as it's the wealthiest location and considered to be that of a utopia by most. Those of The Pinnacle hold the most power and influence as it is practically the ruling state, while Neoterra and Detritus act as merely its provinces in a sense. The elite use the populous of Neoterra and Detritus as their consumer base, distracting them and robbing them through their corporate power and pushing the idea of happiness via consumer goods. Techwave Initiative is a major component in this system seeing as they hold the most power and influence of them all. 

Most of the people in this world deal with the juxtaposition of futuristic technologies and scientific achievements against that of a decaying world and societal collapse. Oftentimes it's seen as best to live moment to moment and not think too hard about the future. For those living in luxury within The Pinnacle things may seem rather perfect. For those who live within Neoterra there can be quite a range between those who are well off and those who are struggling. Most within the city of lights are able to manage. However, most within Detritus struggle for scraps just to make it by.  


AGUMENTED HUMANS

FUSION OF FLESH AND TECHNOLOGY

An Overview

In this technologically advanced society the idea of “augmented humans” is so incredibly commonplace that it is almost stranger if you’re not augmented in some way. An “augmented human” is essentially a cyborg of varying degrees. People will get technological enhancements to their body for all sorts of reasons. Whether cosmetic or as a means to aid in a disability the possibilities are near endless. People can obtain cybernetic eyes to aid in their sight, a mechanical limb to help them walk again, or merely LED implants under the skin that act as light up tattoos.Another common enhancement includes a means of plugging oneself into digital alternate realities, an easy way to escape your true life. 

The smallest of augmentations would be that of a chip implanted somewhere in the hand or wrist that contains one’s “wallet”. It allows for quick and easy transactions; whether it be for food at a convenience store, paying rent bills, or larger purchases such as a vehicle. This chip can also act as your ID and include medical information. Most people have these chips and it’s usually seen as bizarre or suspicious not to have one. Larger augmentations can include multiple limb replacements and synthetic organs. Some people may obtain false limbs that aid in their jobs, such as weaponry for bounty hunters or tools for a mechanic. All of these things can help aid in the quality of life, extend life, or simply please one's body modification desires. 

One thing that cannot be replaced however is the brain. There is no true replacement for it and without your brain you’d no longer be considered human regardless of how much the rest of your body is or is not augmented. This is also important to note because full sentient AI is prohibited, as such true androids and robots do not exist in society. Merely cyborgs, otherwise known as augmented humans.

Humanities Advancements

As you can see from the various mentions of advanced technologies within this world humanity has reached near peak levels of understanding with such things. Already mentioned was the human augmentations for limbs, organs, and even just cosmetic enhancements. Not to mention Ambinetics as a whole being a technological marvel in themselves. This world allows access to all sorts of science fiction technologies, however despite all of this the use and development of advanced artificial intelligence is prohibited. This means no androids or robots of the sort exist. This may seem to contradict the nature of Ambinetics but Techwave Initiative assures their patrons that Ambis are nothing like AI or anything like that. Why would anyone doubt the word of the company that provides so much to the populous?

The World of Ambinetics

While our map is planned out we unfortunately do not have the asset to display at this time! We will be sure to update you all when the content has been added! 

As mentioned in the Settings tab the world of Ambinetics takes place in a distant post - post - apocalyptic future variation of our Earth where a majority of the planet has become uninhabitable. There are currently three major settlements to learn about that exist within the reminiscence of earth. Much of the land outside of these settlements involves barren wasteland and destroyed structures. People don’t venture out there due to the lack of resources and risk of environmental danger to oneself. 

The world itself, while being a future variation of our own, is quite different. None of the borders to countries we know exist here. Our current world human civilizations are hardly even remembered. Oceans have become incredibly receded and weather patterns don’t align with what you might expect in the locations depicted on the map. Natural flora and fauna are all but near myth within this world. Only The Pinnacle has the luxury of having some greenery within their utopia. Aside from the established settlements it would appear most of the world is completely dead.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

CELEBRATION / THANKFULNESS / GIFTS / LOVED ONES

Overview

The Festival of Lights is of great significance to all three territories; The Pinnacle, Neoterra, and Detritus. Though each location celebrates a little differently, there is a common thread of remembrance, thankfulness, and optimism for the future. People come together to celebrate the survival of humanity, despite having fallen to ashes once long long ago, as well as to appreciate the loved ones both past and present.  

Friends and families come together for parties to enjoy meals, play games, and share gifts with one another. Outdoor parties are common even if the weather becomes testy. Many will brave the elements with the idea that nothing can put humanity down or stop them from celebrating that fact. 

In all three locations lanterns are lit and released to float up into the heavens in remembrance of lost loved ones and the ancestors that rebuilt their world from rubble. Each offers their own light shows which signify how humanity is thriving despite all the odds. It is common for stories of what caused humanity’s fall to be shared amongst those gathered to celebrate. The truth is lost to time but the people who remain can still celebrate their triumph over such hardship. 



THE PINNACLE - CUSTOMS

The Festival of Lights within The Pinnacle

During this festival vast light shows cover the night sky with extravagant displays. Floating lanterns are released amongst elegant animated light shows which are achieved with various forms of projection technology. Their shows are said to be so grand that those who live on the borders of Neoterra, facing The Pinnacle, have claimed to see hints of the colorful lights on the horizon. 

Within The Pinnacle, where the sky and the stars are so much more visible compared to the other two territories, it's a breathtaking sight to behold when the natural twinkle of the night sky is combined with the glittering of a fresh dusting of snow. With technology that is capable of influencing the weather within its borders, The Pinnacle always makes sure there is a perfect amount of snow to offer the prettiest of views during the festival both during and after the light shows.

The citizens here put a heavier emphasis on celebrating the scientific and technological triumphs of their ancestors that have led them to the prosperous state they are in now. Excessive food and drink are enjoyed at large parties celebrating the event. Children are often given lavish presents by their parents as a show of their wealth and prosperity. Extravagant Ambinetic models and accessories for said models have become a popular gift option since their launch.


NEOTERRA - CUSTOMS

FALSE STARS / GOOD FORTUNE / FAMILIAL TRADITIONS

The Festival of Lights within Neoterra

Within Neoterra, a place already renowned for the bright lights of its cityscape, the sights to behold become quite different on the day of the festival. For a period of time in the evening hours large sectors of the lights for advertisements and buildings are shut down. Beautiful light shows are projected between and dancing against darkened buildings whilst lanterns are released. Like in The Pinnacle various projection technologies are used to create the intricately dazzling light shows. 

In Neoterra the skies are much less visible. Unless you’re of the elite who get to live within the highest levels of the cityscape you’re unlikely to ever see the sky on a regular basis. Due to this, many light displays will mimic stars and constellations, things that the citizens don’t normally get to see. While many other themes can, and are, depicted with the lights, the shows that depict the stars are usually considered the most sentimental to the average citizen.

When it comes to families with children it is common practice for parents to tell their children that if they are well behaved that the morning after the festival gifts will be left for them by their ancestors. This is meant to be a sign of good luck and fortune for the children; a sign that their ancestors are looking out for them and wishing for their success




DETRITUS - CUSTOMS

STRING LIGHTS / FIREWORKS / REMEMBRANCE

The Festival of Lights within Detritus

The celebrations within Detritus are much more modest. Like Neoterra the sky hardly plays a role when it comes to light displays. As the most impoverished territory it is difficult for there to be large projections of any sort. However, any citizen that is able to will string up colorful lights around and within their dwellings. While fancy electronic light shows are harder to come by, firework shows are rather common in their place. 

Like in Neoterra children are told that their ancestors will bring them gifts the morning after the festival if they behave well, as well as pay respects. There is an extra focus on the spirits of loved ones and the remembrance of them. Often it is less about distant ancestors and more about the recently lost. Many believe their lanterns can reach the heavens where their past loved ones reside and that by releasing the lanterns each year they are showing them that they still love and cherish them, that they are not forgotten.

Within the core of Detritus’s strongest shopping district, which resides adjacent to high speed rail gates that connect Detritus to Neoterra, a Techwave Initiative owned building can be found. This TI location provides low end Ambinetics and other products to any Detritus citizens who might be able to afford their products, as well as offer Ambi-repair services and the like. However, during The Festival of Lights, they put on a free light show for the people of Detritus which encourages them to gather around the store during this time.
