Beliefs

All evines share the belief that there are invisible threads which connect every creature on the planet to the earth itself. Threads can also form between creatures or beings that share a deep connections and may connect family members, pets/familiars, lovers, or even enemies.

As a result of this shared belief, many evines are inclined to pick up any number of thread-related hobbies in their youths. Common evine hobbies include:

  • Sewing
  • Needlework
  • Crocheting or Knitting
  • Quilting
  • Weaving
  • Macrame

Evines may have any number of hobbies, but they tend to find thread, string, and rope-based hobbies very therapeutic. They will often prepare crafts, jewelry, and clothing for holidays and important events in their life. Evine children (male and female) learn how to braid at a young age and can often be found braiding hair, braiding string into bracelets, and even braiding flowers into crowns.

Although the majority of evines cannot see the threads, they are able to sense life more clearly than most other species due to their sensitivity to the life that flows through each creature's threads. An evine can tell if someone is alive (or deceased) within 2 feet of the body; the approximate distance at which two individuals threads begin to cross.

Thread-Seers

On very rare occassions, an evine is born who can see the threads, called thread-seers. Thread-seers are able to view threads and assess color from up to 10 feet away. When viewing a moving target, the threads become blurred and appear as a foggy aura in the color (or colors) of the threads. Evines who can view threads cannot are not able to "turn the ability off" and see the threads of the world at all times.

Thread-seers cannot be born blind, but will retain the ability to see threads if they go blind after maturing into an adult, even if they cannot see what the threads are attached to. Thread-seers who go blind prior to adulthood may retain some ability to see threads, but this will largely depend on their age and skill level. Thread-seers who become blinded at a very young age would have the same life-sensing abilities as a regular evine.

Thread-sight should be considered a rare trait and will count as the single rare trait allowed for standard character creation.

Thread Interaction

The process of evine magic involves the creation of threads between the user and the target (even if that target is a location); the threads that an evine can create through magic are limited to 10 feet, which is why all evine magic is proximity based.

Generally only black and white threaded evines can interact with the threads of other evines. White-threaded evines may have the ability to manipulate, transfer, or create energy within threads. Black-threaded evines may have the ability to sever or dissolve threads, including magical threads. The destruction of life-threads is considered the greatest sin among evines. While the ability is rare, it is not uncommon for evine rulers to employe a neutral thread-destroyer for the execution of evines whose crimes are too horrible to justify their continued existance.

Threads in Other Species

Threads connect all sentient species and creatures, but only an evine thread-seer will ever be able to view those threads. Animals do also have threads which typically have very muted colors. Sentient beings' threads are often more vibrant in color, similar to evine threads, but only evines are able to take advantage of the magic provided by the threads.

Some evines believe that certain animals may be able to see the world threads, but this has never been proven. Some evines may take on animal companions under the belief that they can sense the threads of others and will react appropriately; helping their evine owner to better judge character and protect themselves.
