Clothing Style

Xel always seems to dress for warm weather even in spite of cooler or cold climates, and rather than changing he will complain about cold weather instead. He most commonly wears a green pair of shorts with some brown leather straps across the legs and a off-the-shoulder green top cropped at the midriff. The top section of his shirt goes around his body just below the shoulders, and the section around his chest has an open back held together with study wire-like strings. The opening allows his wings to comfortably grow out from his back at will. Xel adamantly refuses to wear shoes and has crossing leather straps from his knees down to his feet, like footless roman sandals. Across his abdomen and arms he has a few other brown leather straps, which he claims are for resistance training. He also wears a green headband that ties back behind his left ear and trails slightly past his shoulder level. The earrings he wears are green.

Xel doesn't like any clothing that restricts his movements, which he qualifies as anything with sleeves or pant legs. He also doesn't wear things that will add unnecessary weight to him since he needs to fly. Although he'll never admit it though, when in more casual and home-like locations, Xel does have a weakness for sweaters, usually oversized. He doesn't like how they restrict him, but he can't get enough of their overly-long sleeves. If he's wearing one, he will likely flail the loose sleeves around without cease. He also likes scarves that he can cover his face up past his nose with, although he'll never wear them when he's actually outdoors any likely needs it in cold weather. Don't even get him started by asking why.

Personality

Xel is a hotheaded, foul-mouthed, snarky young spitfire from the valley of Daldrian Fey. He has a tendency to speak at max volume more often than not, and seems to love complaining about anything and everything in long tangents that usually include similes most people won't understand. He can come off as very immature, especially with how much he looks and acts like an obnoxious twelve year old (despite being an obnoxious seventeen year old). Xel doesn't particularly love to annoy people, but he just happens to love doing things that usually end up being annoying to others. When it comes to facing challenges or working toward his goals, Xel is headstrong and fearless. He has a strong sense of honor in combat and values his pride more than almost anything, so while he's not completely restricted to only equal footing and fair terms (since he will take opportunities to have an advantage when possible), he does have standards and doesn't like to resort to dirty tactics to succeed. He would rather rely on his skills and wits to lead him to victory rather than having to attribute his wins to luck or circumstances.

Xel can come off as a bit of a spaz and a scatterbrain due to how over the top he can be and how short his attention span seems. However, he has undying focus and resolve for whatever goal he puts his mind to, and there's nothing in the Eternity that can talk him out of it once he's set. He also has completely loyalty to whomever earns his trust, and his resolve to watch their back and aid them in whatever way they can, even at his own expense or risk of safety, will remain unwavering to his last breath. Xel can be relatively easy to get along with if you can handle his endless chattiness and rough personality. He is often optimistic and always seems to have a lot of energy, so if he doesn't come off as annoying then he can be rather uplifting with his contagious enthusiasm. He does have a rather short temper though, so it's best to not provoke him since he can get violent rather quickly if he takes it as a challenge. Although he can be rather supportive toward those he's built trust and friendship with, he can also be a touch insensitive since he can't help but find most people's misfortune to be hilarious, especially if they've done something to warrant it. But of course, his sense of honor will make him more sympathetic toward those who don't seem to deserve hardship.

Abilities

  • Reverb rifting - rank 4/5
  • Ayr rifting - rank 3/5
  • Flight by wings, higher speeds and higher Reverb frequently the more of his 6 wings he's using
  • Can remove pairs of wings to use as weapons (all pairs default to broadswords; combining multiple pairs improves the weapons but lowers or completely removes flight ability)
  • Wings can phase through solid objects while in motion
  • Can momentarily make his entire body phase through solid objects in conjunction with his wings, although he's not very good at making that work reliably yet
  • Can channel energy to and from his alter
  • High pain tolerance and superhuman strength
  • Skilled with using his wing-blades in combat, but he's good with big melee weapons in general
  • Agile, flexible, and has quick reflexes

Strengths

  • Confident, honorable, and headstrong
  • Determined, hardworking, and totally passionate and resolved toward his goals
  • Brave, honest (even if blunt/brutal), and down to earth
  • Loyal, protective, and ride-or-die with his friends/allies

Weaknesses

  • Immature, whiny, easily provoked, and never seems to shut up
  • Brash, rarely thinks ahead, has crippling arachnophobia, and cannot swim
  • Has no sense of boundaries at times and tend to get into personal bubbles or ask invasive questions without seeing any problem with it
  • Extremely defensive about his emotional vulnerabilities and has a lot of suppressed homesickness

Backstory

Xel is the son of Daldrian Fey's most respected warrior and leader, Marek Kalsel. He was born with a set of eight royal wings, which his older sister, Rem, grew jealous of. As a child, Xel was always very eager to learn and could be a bit too adventurous. On one occasion though, he and some of his friends were attacked by the Ariacs living in the mountains around the valley. His father only managed to save him after they were dragged into the Araics' lair and his friends were devoured. Xel developed extreme arachnophobia from this, and he focused even more on his skills in combat so he could better protect those he cared about.

A few years later, his older sister ripped two of Xel's wings out for herself and managed to convince their tribe that he was a traitor and had disturbed a relic in the mountains that allowed the Ariacs to roam unchecked, leading to more attacks than ever. Xel and his alter, Xelha, were forced to flee their home to avoid being executed by a large group of angry villagers and have lived in exile ever since. Xel split up with Xelha after he planned to better himself by training in the Eternity to one day return home to confront his sister and reclaim his honor. He angrily wandered Daliarivon for some time, fighting almost anyone and anything he encountered, until he was captured by the Enlightened and imprisoned in an air base. Their attempts to break him for drafting were prolonged by his stubborn resilience, and it was there he met Gage Lyveil a few years later. Although the two had a rough start, they eventually became friends through their adjacent cells and managed to break out by working together.

The two parted ways for some time, but occasionally met each other in Xyarok and Emdrica, and their friendship grew into a tight bond. Now the two are rarely seen apart. Xel currently lives in Emdrica and trains on to one day confront Rem and prove his innocence, but his plans are interrupted when he realizes the Enlightened are still on the hunt for him and Gage.

 Trivia:

  • Xel's was inspired by a dream about me escaping a flooding earth in a helicopter filled with everyone on the planet, and I fell off the rope ladder, but a short guy with dragonfly wings caught me, and we flew away together to the world of potatoes.
  • Along with being able to use his wings as swords, they also let out a high pitched ringing noise while using them as actual wings. The faster he beats his wings, the higher the frequency and louder it gets.
    • Capable of shattering fragile materials like glass, ice, brittle rock, or other such things if the frequency goes high enough, in conjunction with his Reverb rifting.
  • Xel's relationship with Gage is probably the strongest bond he has since he was alienated from his family and hometown community. The two bicker all the time, but Xel thinks the world of Gage and considers him to be his grumpy, moody, stubborn, and way-too-big older brother.
    • Gage is one of the few people who is actually stubborn enough to get Xel to accept help from time to time, usually by forcing it on him, and the two always have each other's backs (which can lead to them arguing with each other when one takes risks to keep the other out of trouble).
    • Gage is the only person Xel is comfortable pouring his soul out to, which includes all his insecurities and fears, although he'll tend to avoid it for a long while before Gage eventually makes him open up.
    • He tends to follow the centaur around relentlessly, both because they work well together and also because he worries what Gage will do if he's left to his own depressed thoughts for too long.
  • Although Xel rarely talks about it, he is actually very bothered from being separated from his family and is incredibly homesick, which is why he tends to ramble so much about the valley to Gage all the time.
    • Since Gage is the only person he can consider as family now, he comes off as very clingy with him, and although Gage often shows annoyance at all the crap Xel puts him through, they both know they can't do without each other now.
    • Gage always wants to keep Xel out of trouble, Xel constantly finds ways into it, but he always insists that he can take care of both of them.
    • Xel is especially bothered by the notion that his parents believed Rem's lies about him and were complicit in his exile. They weren't actually present when the even took place, but Xel feels like maybe they weren't there because they didn't want to prevent it from happening. He certainly hates the idea that his parents don't approve of him or outright reject and hate him, especially if only because of Rem's manipulation.
  • Even though he values his pride, it won't keep him from resorting to "cheap" tactics if he thinks dying in this situation wouldn't be an honorable death. He'll get grumpy when he's forced to use anything other than his own skills to come out of a fight alive though.
    • This only motivates him to better himself even more so he won't have to rely on anything aside from his allies and himself.
  • Despite how hung up he can get about maintaining his pride, he does know when to be humble and rarely strays into arrogance.
  • Even though he's constantly seeking new challenges to improve himself, he seldom views people that rival his own skills negatively unless their personalities give him reason to.
    • He'll acknowledge others when their abilities legitimately impress him, and he only strengthens his own confidence by bettering himself and not by bringing down others around him.
    • That said, he can be an annoying little shit toward people that don't impress him in the least.
  • He has a healthy curiosity, but only about things he finds strange rather than "interesting," and he'll often ask a lot of weird questions without any regard to how offensive, insensitive, or intrusive they might be.
    • He'll sometimes correct himself if he's overstepped his boundaries, but he rarely acts ashamed or apologizes for it.
    • Xel sometimes doesn't pick up on other people's boundaries very well, or even societal norms in general, and he can often get into people's personal space or business without particularly thinking about it.
  • Xel tends to put himself through a lot in order to better himself and toughen up, and injuries don't seem to down his spirits, especially when around others.
    • He tends to deny help quite often for the sake of his "no pain, no gain" mindset, and he can get rather defensive when people persist in offering help when he insists he's fine on his own.
    • He usually brushes off his fears or emotional insecurities to retain his pride, but he does have moments of vulnerability from time to time and gets even more defensive and touchy if anyone is around to see it.
  • Although Xel acknowledges he can sometimes be a screw up and isn't ashamed to make mistakes here and there, he gets very hung up on qualities he's had trouble with improving over time.
    • In particular his crippling arachnophobia can totally throw him off his game, and he's harbored the frustration of not being able to overcome it since he was a child.
    • He can bounce back from small mistakes relatively easily, but nothing brings him more disappointment than himself failing to make any progress with something he's been working at for a long period of time.
  • Xel can be rather nosy and overly social at times, and although he doesn't always pick up on other people's social cues, he never acts awkward or uncertain about anything he does and always seems to exude confidence even if he has no idea what he's doing.
  • There are few instances when he lets his strong exterior down, and it usually either if he's alone with Gage while having trouble with something or if he's forced to interact face-to-face with his crush, Dema, which usually sends him into a state of paralyzed embarrassment or causes him to flee (and usually vomit).
    • Xel stumbles over his words and tends to blurt out whatever comes to mind first when interacting with Dema, which of course winds up making him immediately regret saying anything and removing himself from the situation before he makes it worse.
    • Prodding him about it later will probably earn you a punch in the teeth.
  • The Dalindran deity of Alters is referred to as the Glass Rogue (mostly because most Dalindrans don't know the deity's formal name). Although Xel is unaware of it, the Glass Rogue is keeping watch over him, primarily because Dalindrans typically don't leave Dalindra very often, and he's interested to see how Xel's quest for justice will turn out.
    • He's particularly interested in Xel because he feels like he has a good chance at fixing the Ariac issue whenever he finally returns to the valley.
    • The Glass Rogue is the reason why Xel didn't die when Xelha was killed by Ariac sent by Rem. The Glass Rogue essentially thought "oh crap, that's gonna screw up the plan" and quickly sealed Xelha soul in a glass crystal pendant forged from nothing so Xel wouldn't immediately die from having his other half of his lifeline severed.
    • The Glass Rogue also caused this glass pendant to phase through Gage's chest while he was wearing it, so Xelha's soul is effectively a part of Gage now. Xel considers Gage to be his new alter now, although that hasn't really affected his view of their relationship since Xel was already pretty ride-or-die with him anyway.
  • During his childhood, Xel would say he was close with all the members of his family (alters included) except for Rem, Aryke, and Cyrase. Rem bullied him relentlessly, and Aryke never paid him any mind and was too hostile with Marek for Xel to consider approaching. Cyrase was always quiet and was kept away from the rest of the family by Aryke, but Xel always thought he seemed nice enough even though they rarely spoke with each other.
  • Xel is meant to have 8 wings, but Rem ripped out two of them for herself.
  • His favorite food is potatoes. You can't understand how much he loves potatoes. He will eat them in any form, even raw.
  • His favorite color is green.
  • He's not necessarily illiterate, but he has a hard time reading anything that isn't in Dalindran. He's capable of reading other things, but he's usually too impatient to deal with it and just doesn't stop to read anything.
  • Curses a lot, but it's always in Dalindran, so not a lot of people actually know what he's saying other than he probably shouldn't be saying it.
  • He doesn't get crushes very often, but pretty much all of them have been on intellectual women. He knows he's not terribly smart, but there's something he finds attractive about brainy ladies.
  • Has screamed at a glass of water until the glass shattered. No rifting required.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "Exiled from his homeland, he seeks out a way to reclaim his pride and bring his traitors to justice."
