Physical Appearance

  • Shoulder length dark purple hair with longer framing bangs, especially on right side
  • Purple eyes
  • Fair skinned on the pale side
  • Medium to somewhat tall in height
  • Physically fit with a toned build
  • Can use his Darc rifting to shift into elemental form or create claws, wings, etc.

Clothing Style

Darian tends to wear primarily black with purple accents in a vaguely rough goth style. He almost always wears long sleeved shirts and pants along with boots. He will frequently wear black jackets, some being leather and some having complex belt accessories or straps. He tends to wear multiple black studded leather belts and sometimes include a chain hanging from them. He will also sometimes accessorize with fingerless gloves and/or a studded choker. Typically he does not wear anything that shows off very much skin.

His most common look is either a black long sleeved shirt with separated sleeves or a black sleeveless shirt with a black jacket that has the same style of separated sleeves. He wears black pants with numerous dark purple straps across the legs and many tears, especially around the ankles. He wears one black belt around his hips and a silver belt that dangles down a bit on his left side. He never takes off his black glass pendant with the Darc symbol on it.

Personality

Darian is the serious and extremely sarcastic estranged prince of the Darclytes, along with also being the new host for the Darc Element, the Black Drayconen. He doesn't speak very often to people he doesn't know well, but it's certainly not because he's shy in any sense. In fact, he's rather arrogant and tends to not talk to anyone who isn't worth his time. He has a rather elitist mindset and considers his kind to be superior to others, yet he doesn't try to assert he's better than anyone else directly (it's always just implied), unless anyone challenges him on the matter, of course. Although Darian is capable of being eloquent and well spoken due to his intellect and upbringing, he's much more likely to be extremely blunt and rather harsh with his words. He comes off as cold and rarely spares anyone's feelings if he is speaking his mind or being honest.

If you ask his friends about him, they'll likely call him a nice guy with a rough personality you just have to get used to, but if you ask him he'll deny it and just say, "Nope, I'm an asshole." He's being somewhat sarcastic of course, but he does tend to be rude and condescending of people that he's not already emotionally invested in. For those he cares about, he is uncharacteristically tolerant of almost everything they do compared to his demeanor otherwise, and he is oddly willing to humor their ridiculous antics. He is especially protective of his Dyric friends, since he feels like they're more vulnerable and weaker than he is so it's his responsibility to look after them. When around his friends, he tends to be more quiet and leave them to their own devices while he just watches over them, and he typically won't interrupt them or bring attention to himself unless he is approached first by others. He also has short range predictive abilities, so coupled with his quick reflexes he is very good at avoiding surprise attacks or sudden trouble, such as the Gal tripping down the stairs so he knows to catch her (which happens far more often than it should). For this reason he's rather difficult to catch off guard, and he tends to respond to threats, especially those toward the Gal or his other friends, with at times disproportionately harsh retaliation. Anyone that offends or threatens them he'll hold a grudge against forever, and although he tends to behave himself more in front of his friends, he will make it very clear to anyone he doesn't like that they need to tread lightly.

Darian is a very focused person and always aims to perform his best in everything he does. Due to his sharp mind and ability to pick up things quickly and easily, he excels at many things, particularly physical and rifting combat, academics, and even playing instruments or learning dances with ease (something he only does because the Gal likes to dance and their school frequently breaks into random musical numbers). His reflexes are quick, his footwork is refined, and he is a prodigy at mastering his rifting. Since he's so skilled at many things, he's very unused to things that he's not good at. He doesn't encounter a lot of things he doesn't at least perform well in, so when he does it particularly bothers him. He may obsess over improving for long periods of time so he'll not experience falling short of his own expectations again in the future. However he tends to mellow out when in friendly competitions with his friends, and he tries his best to not overdo things to take out the fun of the situation or completely smoke them. In cooperative situations he'll carry the team only if everyone is struggling, otherwise he'll let them lead however they want and do his best to support or protect them so they have more freedom to safely consider things.

There is little Darian cares more about than the Gal and Calik, and he is "uncharacteristically" nice around them. He tends to still be sarcastic and cynical, but never to any extreme that would bring down the mood. He's more teasing than anything, and no matter what they takes interest in he tends to support them, even if he normally wouldn't care a bit. While he's normally calm and collected about everything, the best way to get him legitimately worked up or panicked is to put either of them in some kind of peril (although more so for the Gal, since Calik gets into trouble or injures himself on the regular). He and the Gal have been best friends since they were both very young, so they're very familiar with each others quirks and habits. The Gal is one of the few people Darian is fine with opening up to, and he tends to be very affectionate with her. He can sometimes get a little flustered in very intimate situations if he's made aware of how intimate they actually are, but he grows more comfortable with it as they get older. Darian is a little more oblivious about intimate situations with Calik and doesn’t really register how they’re much closer than average guy friends. Calik is also much more open about being affectionate with his friends, so any closeness with him feels less “weird” whereas being very close with the Gal feel more “serious” at times.

Backstory

Dramida Darkwing was born the younger twin prince of Damidrakai, although his parents shunned his older brother, Damidra, and favored Dramida to one day ascend the throne instead. Although mentored to become a skilled rifter from a young age, he was always more interested in spending time with his older brother, who he always felt was very different from him and the rest of their race, which was the reason their parents wanted nothing to do with him. The Darclyte race always prided itself in being "perfect" and far superior than other races, and Damidra was always very interested in the affairs of the races of the Eternity, which Damidrakai purposely removed itself from. Damidra would regularly disappear from the castle and return with new stories of the outside world to tell his younger brother, who was utterly enthralled by them. Damidra started going by the name Damion instead, and at some point Dramida insisted on taking an outsider name as well and went by Darian, to his parents' disapproval. The more Damion ventured out, the more he seemed to outgrow Darian until he looked to be in his twenties while Darian was still a child. Damion confirmed that although they were twins he was very much different from Darian, although he never explained why or how until years later.

When Darian was eight years old, the Demriles attacked Damidrakai in search of him, since he was meant to be the next host for the Darc Element, the Black Drayconen. The other Darclytes abandoned their kingdom until the attacks passed, uninterested in the conflicts of outsiders, and they resigned to letting them have Darian to be left alone. Damion refused though and fled Damidrakai with Darian and two of his guardians, Ryclithe and Myverie, and they hid out on Taliac. Upon landing on Taliac, Darian met Nicole Valkiea and was fascinated by her, the first (non-hostile) outsider he'd ever encountered.

Damion took Darian to live in a small secretive rifter community in Nebraska, where Darian was surprised to find that Nicole also lived there. The two grew up going to the private school there and became close friends. In the meantime, he has trained with his older brother to become a fierce warrior so when the time comes to face the Demriles and fulfill his destiny as the Black Drayconen's host, he would be ready.

Trivia:

  • Darian was initially made to be Nicole Valkiea's boyfriend, and since she was my persona/self-insert back then, he was obviously made to be super talented and dreamy from my point of view. XP
    • He's more developed now obviously and has more flaws, but he used to be the typical bad-boy aloof mysterious love interest. He's still a little like that, but he's a lot more self aware of it.
  • His eyes and hair were made to be purple just because it was (and still is) my favorite color.
  • In the original story he and the Gal appeared in, Darian actually died and became somewhat a ghost before the sequel came up for him to regain a mortal body.
    • I still have real friends to this day who recall him as "my dead boyfriend." XP
    • He's now known as "my not-boyfriend" as a mild jab at him being a fictional boyfriend for me back then, and also because the two are so dang wishy-washy they can't just admit they like-like each other until like five books later.
  • An old running joke involving him had him injuring me somehow in a comedic fashion ever time I did something stupid, something similar how in the original Pokemon anime Misty would whack Ash in the head with various objects for being an idiot.
    • In particular these events only happened in doofy comic forms, and whenever Darian would dramatically kick/punch/whack me over the horizon, it would always be my other persona, Nicole McPhoenix, rather than Nicole Valkiea, because he'd never hit the Gal for any reason. Any other me though, SURE AS HELL YO
  • The Darc pendant he wears has a matching Lyte pendant that the Gal wears. Initially Darian had the Lyte pendant to better help him channel his Lyte rifting, since he is disproportionately more Darc rifting comprised than Lyte for a Darclyte. He later on gifted it to the Gal to help her channel her own Lyte rifting, and he wears the Darc version to have a link between her rifting and his own. The Gal isn’t terribly skilled at Lyte rifting at first, but her rifting better helps him stabilize his own weak Lyte rifting and creates a better balance when he uses his rifting in general.
  • Very often when around strangers or people he doesn't care about when with his friends, he won't even speak to them directly and just make offhanded remarks about them to his friends instead.
    • When with the Gal in particular, he may speak to her in Darclyte, which she can understand due to their linking Darc and Lyte pendants.
  • There are already a number of people that have proved a threat to the Gal that he would feel utterly no remorse about killing. He has particular malice for Neoka Emtratika for his interest in the Gal, and the only reason he doesn't kill him is because it would upset the Gal.
    • The two have very tense interactions with each other, and they rarely miss the chance to mock one another straight to their face.
  • Darian specifically goes out of his way to not practice playing video games that the Gal likes to play so when he plays them with her, he won't get obsessed with "perfecting" his skills and making things unfun for her. He knows he tends to be a perfectionist and would rather let her take the lead since she's more invested in video games than she is.
  • Darian is usually too prideful/dignified to do certain things "beneath him," but the second one of his close friends, especially the Gal, asks him to do something that he'd normally never do, he'll immediately be okay with it. He won't do anything without some emotional investment first.
    • Person A: “Hey Darian, you want to go do XYZ?” Darian: “No, that sounds stupid.” The Gal or Calik: “Hey D, you want to go do XYZ?“ Darian: “Yeah sure, whatever.”
  • He is occasionally drawn playing an electric guitar in doodles, but he actually doesn't know how to play guitar.
    • He can play a song perfectly if a spontaneous musical number breaks out, but the second it ends and you ask him to play something else, he'll just say "I don't know how to play this. Why would you assume I do?" in an extremely deadpan manner.
  • When Darian was younger, Ryclithe and Myverie would usually act as "babysitters" for him when Damion was out. They still look after him as guardians of sorts when he's older. They consider themselves as retainers to the royal family of Damidrakai and protect him despite his estrangement from his kingdom.
  • Darian isn't sure what his "birthday" is since Darclyte culture doesn't care about birthdays and don't keep track of them. He's also not sure when it would fall on the Taliac calendar, so he just celebrates his "birthday" as the first day he arrived on Taliac, which happens to also be the Gal's birthday (February 7th).
    • Since they've known each other for so long, they tend to have joint birthday parties, mostly because Darian wouldn't actually do anything special for his own birthday if other people didn't prod him into it.
  • His favorite color is black.
  • Sometimes borrows Damion's motorcycle to go places with the Gal. He doesn't even have a driver's license, but he knows how to drive it just fine. He pretty much ignores anyone who tries to question it, and he has probably outrun the cops multiple times before.
  • Not entirely sure what love is, and the feeling is somewhat unsettling to him. Love is not really a factor in Darclyte culture, so it's still a little foreign to him. Despite this, he knows it's something real, since he at least knows he probably loves his brother. He's just not entirely sure how to define it yet.
  • Darian fears his gradual shift into becoming more like mortals as he spends more time in the Eternity. The Darclytes left the Eternity long ago to have no part of its foundation and laws, and they slowly became the most optimal beings for their isolated state. Since coming to the Eternity and living on Taliac, Darian has slowly been shifting to be more "optimal" for living in this environment, which means he has slowly started taking on traits of mortals. As he has gotten older, he experiences more emotions, feels pain, and finds his immortal traits becoming dulled. He is afraid of becoming less than his perfect expectations for himself, and in his opinion, becoming more like mortals is making him worse.
  • Tends to stare or glare at things or people when nervous, which can be more unsettling than he means to be.
  • Darian doesn't need to eat to sustain himself, but as he spends more time on Taliac he does feel more compelled to eat things just because it's a thing that mortals do. He doesn't really have much of a sense of taste at first, but as he starts to adapt to more "mortal" traits, he does develop some sense of flavor. He still doesn't have to eat though and it's more of just a thing to do for fun.
    • One of his favorite snacks is a kind of dried shredded squid, the particular brand called Squiddy-Bits.
    • The name Squiddy-Bits is a reference to a phrase either I or my sister used to describe a digital squid pet I had in a Facebook game called Music Pets, and sometimes when the game crashed I would comment, "Oh no, my squid exploded," which somehow turned into "they exploded into a million little squiddy bits." And then I just turned that into a snack name. ^^;
  • Has yet to kiss the Gal due to numerous thwartings from fate. They only finally get their shit together when all the main story arc stuff is over.
    • The closest she got was some time at school after Darian was recovering from a particularly difficult fight with Shanan agents. Unfortunately while they were contemplating whether or not to kiss, the Gal got hit in the back of the head with a basketball and bashed Darian in the face with her face.
    • If anyone asks, Darian definitely did not cry when she smashed into his very sensitive head wound. Definitely not.
  • Over time, his design hasn't changed much, although his hairstyle has smoothed out a bit, and his personality has also gotten a little less abrasive.
  • Used to have a slight accent from his time living in Damdrakai, but he's grown out of it.
  • Darian tends to push himself very hard when he’s training or sparring with Damion, and he tends to frustrate himself by getting too fixated on the fact that Damion is always holding back and yet still so far out of reach in ever beating him. Damion usually tells him he’s just meant to improve and not necessarily aim to win against him, but Darian is too much of a perfectionist to accept that.
    • Damion finds it particularly endearing how when Darian was a younger teen and just starting advanced techniques of combat and rifting he would still accuse Damion of going easy on him. On one particular occasion when Darian demanded to know why he was doing that, Damion answered, “Well, I have to. I could kill you with one punch.” Darian’s immediate response was to demand that he punch him.
    • Damion sometimes asks Darian if he has any issues he wants to talk about after he reiterated that punching him would probably kill him. Apparently the risk of death isn’t a good enough reason to avoid getting punched by your weird older brother.
    • Damion has teasingly responded to Darian's demands to be punched by him by learning to make his own personal punch recipe for parties. Darian begrudgingly admits it's a really good recipe but is still circumventing the issue.
  • A primary reason why Darian might be such a obsessive perfectionist is due to issues with his parents. He was always confused why they never approved of Damion and always tried to keep him from becoming more like him. They made it very clear to him that he had to fulfill his full potential in order to serve his role as the crown prince since Damion was too much of a "disappointment" to do so.
    • When the Demriles attacked and the king and queen realized that Darian had been chosen to be the new host for the Black Drayconen, they deemed he too was not a viable heir since they wanted nothing to do with the Eternity and its affairs. In their eyes, Darian was "tainted" by the Eternity and could not be salvaged, and they left him to be taken by the Demriles.
    • Darian is still particularly haunted by the moment his parents abandoned him to the Demriles. He had followed them as they left the palace to survey the damage the Demriles were causing to the kingdom in their search for him, and Darian was under the impression that they were going to do something about it or at least take him with them when they fled. Instead they simply looked down at him and remarked "You and your brother are more trouble than you are worth." "How disappointing," before leaving without him. Darian would've been taken by the Demriles then and there if Ryclithe and Myverie hadn't leapt to the attack, and Damion soon after arrived and swept Darian off to safety.
    • He now acknowledges that his parents are meaningless to him, just as he is apparently meaningless to them. He channels all his energy and focus into preparing for his destiny to host the Black Drayconen, partially to prove that he is meant for something better than his parents' unreasonable yet limited expectations of him, but it's also partially to quell his constant worries that he is unworthy or a disappointment to the people that matter to him.
